Having the developer use your channel for research is a much bigger win than subs, likes and views! Great work!!
I'd like to see DLC, maybe another quad branch or 2.
But, I'd like to see Williams as a playable character. Give him his punches and jump kick and big attacks with his baseball bat.
Maybe have Eye Patch Adams or the Agent Dudes.
I'm a huge fan of Double Dragon, also. Played it to death as a kid in the 80's in the arcades. My son and I are building our own arcade machine so we can play the Double Dragon original, alongside Shinobi and other greats, at home. As a huge fan, I bought Double Dragon Gaiden the day it was released and I love it! Played it only minutes ago, in fact.
I often wondered why the cage and industrial area was from. Then, realized I pretty much never got past the first level. Think i did once or twice in hindsight. Fell off edge and got blown up right away.😅
@@chriszaun8984I've always thought a kid should be brought up with video games introduced in chronological order.
So they can experience all, and its not just 2 or 3 games.
In the early 90’s y was playing Double Dragon on my bootlang Chinese nes clone this is one of these games that made me a gamer l’m 36 years old and just want to say Long Live to Double Dragon 🐉🐉 Thank you for all the memories 👍.
Bro I’m 36 and me and my best friend was playing the hell out of double dragon 2 in the early 90’s we would stay up all night and after a few months we got so good that we beat it in I think master mode what ever is above warrior haha
Nes dd1 and 2 are on switch played all the nes and game boy games oh yes if you unlock music will that play during stages
@@andyf3269double dragon 2 was the goat back in the day the fist thing after school was getting some friends over and try to beat dd2 on hard those where the days no dlc nothing just insert game and play
My favorite game was Super Double Dragon on SNES. Wish the other games had the same block/counter mechanic.
Mine too. It was ahead of its time with that mechanic. It’s a shame that game was rushed.
On the point discussed at 18:00 about the graphical style not being consistent throughout the series, this is only half true. All of the games up to this one followed a sprite design philosophy that put a big emphasis on the characters' arms and legs because that's the main method of attacking for most of the characters. In DD Gaiden, the limbs of Billy and Jimmy are very small and thin compared to their massive heads, which is a conflicting design choice given that their arms and legs are still their main method of attacking.
I'm just going to say it out loud, the style of the sprites look like something from Newgrounds. They're not bad or anything but they definitely have that "Newgrounds retro pixel art" style it's just what it is. I think a style closer to River City Girls 2 would have suited it better. It's still a great game though.
The art design in this game is frustrating because the character art and designs are PHENOMENAL but the sprites are...questionable. They animate great but they seem off. I've heard people claim that it seems like they're trying to rip-off Scott Pilgrim and Shredder's Revenge and I realized I like the sprites there but not here. Upon closer inspection, the heads are nowhere near detailed and expressive enough for a Super Deformed style of game and they're also too square. I've finally realized this is a big beef of mine with retro pixel art games is that actual retro games would avoid squares while indie games tend to embrace them. I think this is the worst on the female characters as I just can't get over how much Linda's head ruins her sprite.
But yeah if anything, as much as I love bright colorful games, Double Dragon isn't really bright and colorful as it's supposed to be a post apocalyptic New York. So the SD visual style is weird.
Thanks for pointing out the arm thing though! You're spot-on on that one!
Great hearing the developers story!
To date my favorite entry has been Neon but this one looks really promising, I’m definitely gonna give it a try when I can!
I'm happy beat'em ups are back in style.
I love the Renaissance of the beat'em up genre is going on right now, and it's only fitting that the original big daddy of them all to claim it's rightful place at the top! Incredible and inspiring story of the whole development, the game looks and feels amazing. I can't wait to try it out myself! Double Dragon forever!!
It’s great to see Double Dragon return back to its roots after so many years. Despite being a rogue like game, it won’t stop from being a fun beat em up.
As soon as I heard about the rouge like aspect I thought of streets of red. This whole things looks great.
Streets of Rage 4, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, and now Double Dragon Gaiden are the best modern beat em ups to date.
I hope to see a new Final Fight and a new Battletoads soon.
Beat em ups are getting better and better with renewed spark and vigor!
Just bought the game for my Switch thanks to your vid. I love beat em ups from River City to Turtles. Oddly haven't played the Streets games recently despite having the first 2 games. Very hard to get the third game for some reason.
Buy the sega collection on the switch, it has the first 3 streets of rage games.
Holy crud, congratulations!!! What a great way to start the video!
Dude kick ass!! That's awesome to hear about the developer taking inspiration from your love of Double Dragon and implementing it to the current title!!🤘😎 "Yeahhhhh!"
I watched your deep dive on Double Dragon & grew up w/ the series; good stuff. Awesome that they tapped your vid for reference; had to be surreal....(& yea the series is def back on track; I JUST got done playing Gaiden & maaaaaaan it's 🔥🔥🔥)
wow, such an awesome story. Congrats on becoming part of this franchise. Love the video btw.
GREAT JOB I WATCHED THAT 3HR VIDEO. I SALUTE YOU SIR!
I'll be honest, I had forgotten about this game coming up until I saw your video reminding me off it. Happily surprised it has been released for a few days already. Will check it out immediately! Thanks for making the informative video too :)
Brilliant choice of name! I for one, welcome Uncle Matin in our roster. This is how to use source materials right, folks.
i still remember bought an obscure beat em up made by them called devil's dare on steam. didn't expect them to develop double dragon IP years later.
A true influencer! Hahaha, bravo sir!
Props from The US! ❤
I played a LOT of Double Dragon II: The Revenge on NES with my Dad back in the early 90s. Really cool to see you get to be part of the history of the series! I wanna play this new one!
The fact that you kept referring to Billy as BIMMY the whole video 😂 love the reference!
I've been having a ton of fun playing this game and was excited for it to come out on Switch. I pre-ordered it once I saw the previews of it. Good work to the developers!
Very in-depth explanation about this game and its development, which does justice to such a great game. Ive just downloaded it and are exploring its combo (including co-op combo) opportunities!
That's awesome you had input in helping this game come to life. I bouight this game day 1 and really enjoyed what it has to offer, being a fan of DSLoogie the artist who drew the front cover of the game. I was already invested in checking it out and I'm glad I did,I still need to beat it more so I can unlock the rest of the characters. But this is definitely the best Double Dragon game ever made.
I loved super souble dragon on the snes and have fond memories playing it with my older brother.
Just watching gameplay videos looks fun enough. Sadly not fan of the art direction (they all skipped leg day) as I prefer more the look from the arcade originals or the snes/sfc. Still I’m glad this game is getting lot of attention as it could lead to more DD content in the future.
But… why no Ranzou no Chin??
I am so happy that this video landed in my recommendations!! I am so buying this game!
Your title is one i have been looking for. I remember Game Informer gave the og & GBA the same score, rubbish on that especially with that infamous broken bridge jump = run & jump over it. This info in your video is very new & cool to me i thank you for it🎩❤️
On your authority alone I will be purchasing this game, love your channel and couldn’t think of anyone else’s opinion meaning more, will definitely be watching your documentary on DD later, just awesome, thank you good Sir Tophat
Good video as always. Congratulations on those high score. Hope they make the same love letter to the other legendary beat em up BATTLETOADS.
Awesome story, and review. This title is the 25th DD title added to my collection. I also have 2 Arcade PCBs (1&2) and the 2 NeoGeo MVS cartridges. (DD&RofD) Love this series.. 25 titles for now, hunting for GG and Lynx 😁
Thanks. I’ll be picking this one up now. A huge fan since the original. I was skeptical at first. Now I’m excited. I have an arcade kiosk I put together a couple years ago and have twin sticks and 8 buttons on each side. I wanted the arcade experience at home and this will be a fun addition.
love double dragon but the chibi style really puts me off an option to shrink the heads would be great
Take a look at River City Girls 2 something like that would have fit it perfectly. The style they used is reminiscent of what I refer to as the "Newgrounds retro pixel art style" I''m not saying they are bad (the animation and sprites are quite good) but I think it would have fit the game better. The game itself is still very good though.
@@atomicskull6405 its dissapointing that they chose the same vibe as Double Dragon Neon. Making it silly cheesy cartoony instead of a gritty nasty street fighting game it should be. Im sure its fun but but I want the same style as the original arcades. That was just perfect imo.
I’m so happy someone listen to me I know I’m not the Only one but I did ask for a new one and my answer to that question was a Major yes! Great my hat tipped and greatest gratitude to Arc Fir this thank you!
I was wondering about the background of the creation. There were some sound assets that I had heard that were in the Nintendo Switch home menu selection, Zelda: Link to the past and Castlevania. They are a small company with limited resources, Limited assets, small crew of staffers, but a lot of heart, so that explains that. I absolutely love this game. It's so much fun! It's nice to see that a major IP giving a smaller creator the reigns to make something timeless.
Awesome review and an instant buy! Hope they manage to add online play in the future.
damn i love that game. i plaied it with ma grandpa in the 80s
The saying should go “Life is like a box of choco-lets, you always know what you’re gunna get because there’s always a map on the back or inside the box that shows you exactly where everything is.”
I haven’t had this much fun playing double dragon since dd2 on the nes!
Yeah, I'm not a fan of the art style at all, but it does look pretty fun overall, so I might have to check it out at some point.
100% I bought it to support the developers and the need for double dragon content, but yea I don't like the art style at all.
I think what will help the Lee brothers gain popularity is if they become guest characters in a fighting game which I am surprised hasn't happened yet. They would fit quite well in King of Fighters if not.... I wouldn't mind seeing them in Street Fighter
JUST GOT IT, PLAYED IT AND FINISHED A RUN IN ONE GO..............................AND HOLLY CRAP, this game is everything i wanted, it is just so so so good, so much ....... details and such a good time, really exceeded all my expectations, i swear, i had more fun playing this that the last TMNT game and i am a huge turtles fan...THE MUSIC ALONE, especially THE TURCK THEME from SDD is just....it almost made me cry of joy.
this is a DD game done right, not for everyone, but it sure was enough for me.
i beat it in 1 go as well. in an hour. but for me, it made me really wish there was more :/
@sonic-bb turns out that there is so much more , 2 endings , am extra stage and the order you tackle the missions will give u more levels ans different boss fights, also unlocking the playable chatrchtes , so yeah , already beat it like 10 to 12 times and still enjoying , also thr royals stage is my favorite since it was the truck level music from super double dragon and it makes me happy.
@EpicLebaneseNerd yeah I know the bosses get powered up depending on the order u fight them. But idk, that isn't worth too much of a replay for me :/ cause the stages are still the same. But I guess seeing the third stage for each level is cool.
What's the second ending? Just accepting to fight the mayor or not? I'll run through it again. But man I gotta say, beating it in an hour was really disappointing. I was hoping for at least 3 hours worth
Super double dragon is one of my top 10 fav games of all time
this looks incredible, can't wait to try it. I hope that someone ports some characters or levels over to Rivals of Aether workshop to bring in that crowd too
I had a feeling the creators of Streets of Red Made the New Double Dragon because of the art style.
Congratulations Mr. Hat!
I'm actually disappointed that sonny lee wasn't playable again as i hoped, even more so if this is a prequel as you mention. I finally played the game on release saddly i also was sick so i powered through one playthrough. It was a great experience really recomend it and tried the harder option straight to gauge the difficult which i believe thanks to playing streets of red these past weeks really made the experience more enjoyable. Congrats on being an influencer beyond the realm thought possible. Have a great day sir.
Streets of Red is such a fun game I am glad to see the developers return with another game.
I love this game, bought it on release day and I've unlocked everything so far including all the new dlc. I hope they end up releasing more
The ball's in your court Capcom. Was that last fight our ... Final Fight?
On Geiden you can still connect combos before they turn grey even if the enemy health is at 0
I love this game and I honestly wouldn’t mind if they did dlc adding one or two more gang lords.
I already bought two copies. One for home, and one for mobile! Looking into a Third just to show off on my shelf :)
Very cool and congratulations Top Hat Man I've been trying to get this game today did just first game release was trying to get that looks like a lot of fun would have been really cool things could have got DLC with the creators of Battletoads to do a call back to the crossover with double dragons and the battletoad can mention the his line he how to make another Cameo another game in Killer Instinct
Same here i have been playing this game for days now, I'm not a trophy chaser but this one i want to complete and get the platinum trophy (still working on the 3,000 special KO's) simply love this game. Haven't gone online to get on the leader board but now I'm on a Double Dragon mission to take you out from first place.
top hat deserves a cameo in Double Dragon Universe
Got the game cause of your recommendation. I immediately noticed a lot of the modern design which is very similar to my game, which is also a tag beat em up (but an adult nsfw one). I feel so vindicated seeing big production games have similar ideas as mine lol
My 5yr old loves to play this game with dad. I don’t know what better endorsement you can get than that!? He’s also not bad and we’ve beat it a couple of times (ending A) going for unlocking everyone.
You are the G.O.A.T. of gaming review and explanation!
At first i was hesitant but when i played it i was gaming for 8hrs 😊, its on par on sor4, river city girls 2 and tmnt shredders revenge, best purchased ive made this July ❤
Let's be honest here people we all know that uncle Matin is really Bimmy with a bad tan.......😂😂 YEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH 👍👍
It’s a great game!!! I enjoyed this new style and I hope it’s here to stay
Someone give these guys the rights to do a proper new BattleToads game!!!
@@SecretBase Talk to Microsponge I mean Microsoft since it's a Rare game
I just got this game yesterday. I think it's a pretty good game.
Awesome!!!
Playing double dragon on the Amstrad CPC 464 blew my little mind at the time.
I was in terrible pain myself for multiple years and still not great. But that whole not wishing it in anyone else that it was that bad runs true with me as I've said the same.
Hearing that money gamble, I hope it all comes back to him and then some to the point he makes great bank for the next game and their pockets.
Not a perfect game, but a great looking fun game with a great soundtrack it seems.
I'm enjoying this entry. That said we'd like some consistency. The next entry shoul share mechanics, art style, and story.
Super Double Dragon on SNES is the best beat em up of all time.
4:00 can anyone tell/link me to the song / version of the Double Dragon Theme. Love this, would love to find it
As a life long Double dragon fan I'm just enjoying all of this good attention the OG beat em up is getting.
dd advance on gba was a masterpiece.. i don't remember enjoying any side scroll beat em up as much as i did dd advance..
I love this game as well
I’m sold ordering a copy now 👍
Damn, I'm sold. This type of passion for making games is very rare these days - found only among fans/modders and indie devs. Besides, I'm always down for another beat em up that isn't designed to be stupidly difficult (looking at you, Fight n Rage). I reckon I'll be getting this on Switch because I don't have any beat em ups for that platform. If I like it, ima get it for Xbox too
Looks more like river city ransom then double dragon
Personally I'd preferred if the team behind river city girls made this game. But it's good to see another double dragon game.
Please do videos on the 2 dungeons & dragons arcade games, the bouncer, urban reign, mortal kombat shaolin monks, scott pilgrim vs the world game, dragon's crown, & mighty morphin power rangers mega battle
I hope you get to review Double Dragon forever. For windows. You might need a windows 7 machine though in order to get it to work. I had to...
Double Dragon 2 l stayed up till 5am playing. And l kept coming back. I was super addicted to that game. My cousin and l. I actually played DD Gaiden on the Switch. Just to see if its good. And omg. This game is so good with all the cool moves the characters they have. I play fighting games like and this game really has some setups and cool things you can pull off easily. It's so fun. 😂 Like for real. I was surprised at the combos and moves you can chain together. Truly an amazing accomplishment. I'm so happy. This game is the next game that l will beat.
I bought the new one on pc
I love it! Fun , feels great!
I'm so buying this!
at minute 12:42 im realizing why i havent buy this game? chech steam purchase the game ad return to end your video thanks man big fan of the chanel and double dragon saludos desde mexico!
I've never been good at Double Dragon but damn do I love the look and feel of Neon... on top of the 80's retro vibe it is my favorite version.
i played all DD ganes. this think is crazy. probably the best beat em up game. full fighting game system with skill based combos. i did speedrun this game and it was lot of fun.
bimmy/jimmy, they will never live that down. I clearly remember that typo @ 10 like it was yesterday.
Old school stuff yes sir
They came to the right guy!!! Awesome!
Just needs to be on Android, with local offline multiplayer and controller support so I can play it on my retroid pocket 2s in the future with my boy . On the go options shouldnt be limited! This is where these kinds of games shine.
Looks alot like River city girls an that game was awesome im glad they went this direction.
What destroyed Double Dragon started off with Double Dragon 3. That third game sapped the soul out. Return of the Double Dragons from the 1992 SNES days brought the series back to life. But once Marvel did the comics of Double Dragon in 1990, that is when the mainstream strip mine the series from that stupid cartoon in 1993 and the game from the stupid cartoon. The movie in 1994 that was putrid. But hey, Double Dragon Advance in 2003 brought the series back to life.
I wish they'd make a main stream double dragon game like the android or zeebo version. I wanted to play that so badly.
Reminds of Double Dragon Neon alot, after 3 1/2 hours in. Hated the art style but the gameplay loop was super addictive that I ended up loving the game, going through the hardest mode with all the unlocked abilities. You dont start off weak in this game like that one, but unlocking those better characters gives you some great team and character options that can really help you optimise your playthrough. Only big issues I have is that some areas drag for too long and you gotta watch out what order you do those bosses in. Some of the harder boss forms can be very bullshitty with very limited time windows to damage them. The helicopter version of Willy as an example. I reccomend not doing Machine Gun Willy as the last mission.
But his final form fight goes hard with the remixed theme from the OG Double Dragon. 😂
If there was a battletoads update id poop myself
I loved Streets of Red
I just wanted to share that both Sian Yue and I were super happy to see the video this morning.
It's been quite the journey, and I appreciate Hot Hat Gaming Man for documenting and sealing it in his history of Double Dragon videos.
From a fellow Singaporean to another, great job! Wishlisted on Steam and will purchase it once I've whittled my backlog down a little. Spent countless hours playing DD2 during the late 80s/early 90s.
Thank you for delivering the fun!
Please ask them to do a Ninja Gaiden arcade game remake next. 🙏 🎮 😊
