Looks a bit scary, well mostly sounds a bit scary. I just bought one and when you try to manipulate it it creaks a bit. I assume this is normal?

The real question is, why would you do it? Surely it will damage your hat if you do this frequently. Best case scenario is that it will lose its shape.
It's for when you are travelling, it goes in the tube in your bag.
