Not sure if you know this but an easier way to eliminate AI results on google for ex is adding -AI- to your search! This works on PC relatively well, not sure if it works for mobile, but it works about 95% of the time on computer. Example for a search would be "Hand reference -AI-" Hopefully the results for the AI trash will die down in time, but for now we do have this option (even if it is tedious.)

Drawfee (more specifically, the Drawfee Extra channel) posts their "Draw Class" streams as videos some time after streaming, so people who aren't Patreon members can still have access (they just have to wait a bit longer), and they're very helpful!
Also, for Krita users, the Krita website has a ton of resources - brushes, tutorials, even a link to its own community forums.

One thing about magic poser is that without premium you can only use one model in a scene and you only get the default male model. If you only draw men and don't draw interactions between characters then I guess the app is perfect for you.

I stopped using magic poser for this exact reason. They originally had a few male and female models for free, and even with the update that included the body diversity, for a while, they still had a few of the new models free too. Then, without any disclosure that I could find, they were all suddenly paywalled.

Honestly bless you for giving Fashion Dreamer a shout out, it’s a fantastic lil game (that’s pretty discounted and was closer to 50usd at launching) that’s perfect for switch owners who want to design their own outfits. I use it for male and female outfits.
You mentioned Love Nikki as a great resource for fashions which it is, but mostly for female fashions as their male clothes are pretty limited. A game I found super useful as an art reference (specifically for male outfits and fashions) is the mobile game Disney Twisted Wonderland. Created by Yano Toboso (of Black Butler fame) her designs for the characters are just so good for male fashions that don’t conform to the stale white bread of most men’s fashion. Plus, each character uses a Live2D model so they move and have the option to view a character’s full body so you can see their full outfit.

  • @certaindeathawaits
    @certaindeathawaits Před měsícem +7

Shining Nikki is the newer version of Love Nikki and it lets you access a variety of poses which you can change the angle and lighting of, I highly recommend it for art reference. Basic, easier-to-obtain clothing items are typically all you need for reference because the more complex outfits that require a lot of gameplay to get are more specific character designs.

Magic poser WAS a great resource for artists. WAS. I used it a lot in the past years especially for duo/group drawings. I wasn't anything special and far from perfect, but it was useful. Now that it's a subscription I don't have access to things that were free before. I'd rather get CSP and use their models.

As 'cringy' as they are, Gacha games made by Lunime are also really good for designing and creating references for character designs. With the installation of Gacha Life 2, players can customize the characters much more, to the point that you're not just limited to chibi characters anymore if you know what you're doing. It's obvious that the newer games are made for an older audience, being more for younger to mid teens, as you can use a color wheel and reposition almost everything. The complicated customization features are something I know I wouldn't have understood as a kid, from custom poses to moving a bow from the character's neck to be a detail in the outfit somewhere. I've seen some gorgeous designs from players using the second installment, which forced me to redownload the game for the first time in two years since I aged out of the Gacha demographic (rather late, as I was in my mid-teens). I will admit, the incestuous mini-movies and cringy compilations that appear when you search 'Gacha Life' on CZcams were not the content I enjoyed. Rather, I had a huge love, respect, and following for a long list of creators I found over the years who were actually good, hard-working, and deserving creators that I showed support to.

My main way to get references is usually just by taking-out my camera and taking a picture of what I want to draw. I got a bit better at photography just by taking these liminal landscape backgrounds. I can even cheat and use my photos as the background of my drawings if I feel lazy enough.
As for poses I just use myself. Though, if I need to draw a female then I'd use line of action to refresh myself with the anatomy. You'd be surprised how much you can do just by examining yourself
I haven't done too many indoor environments, but I tend to just use Blender and model everything that way. Is it overkill? Absolutely! Though, it helps me learn how to 3D model at the same time.
Finally, if I need to research a specific style, then I just take a bunch of screenshots of the show/art/animation/thing that has the style I'm looking for, and examine them to learn the style more thoroughly.
These things may not be for everyone, but I personally I find it fun, rewarding, hassle free (no need to deal with licensing), I learn new skills, and it gets me out of the house more often. Wins all-around!

    • @mischief5905

I might doing this but I have questions about blender.
      1. Does it require a large memory space?
      2. How hard and long does it take to learn?
Complex like math but once you get a formal you got it?
It takes a lot of repetition to memorize steps?
Like being able to make a simple decent model as one would, like a vase of a clothing ( though I heard clothes are much harder )
      1. How do you take pictures? Is light being considered? Or it doesn’t matter as long as you got the object and composition right.
      2. Did you watch tutorials on photography?

    • @thepuzzlemaster64
      @thepuzzlemaster64 Před měsícem

      @@mischief5905
For Blender, I'm not the most experienced in it (still need to learn a lot of optimizations) but:
      1. It doesn't use a lot of space. For an individual object the largest one I've made took around a handful of megabytes (sometimes a few hundred megabytes if it's especially big). Though, from my experience of testing Blender on random old machines. I recommend that you use Blender on a PC with a CPU and GPU (especially a GPU) that was made in the mid 2010s for it to be usable enough
      2. I can't give a definitive answer on how easy it is to learn since I have a tendency to learn things a little too quickly (the worst problem, I know). Though, it depends on how you prefer modeling things in 3D. You can either start by molding your model like a pile of clay and simplify it with quads later on, or you can just model with quads from the start and see how little of them you really need to make your model, and sub-divide the detail in. I find the latter fun because it's almost like a puzzle game in a way, but that's just me.
Basically, if your end-result is either all quads (4-sided polygons), or all tris (triangles) you should be good. Though, quads are better for adding modifiers. It's tricky, but if you're able to understand both the doughnut tutorial, and Decoded's topology videos, you should be pretty decent at doing static models. Can't say much for rigging though, as I didn't study that field enough. Although, Doodley and Joey Carlino have good videos about that.
Also, yes, cloth physics are the worst thing to model! Tried making curtains once and it was a nightmare!
As for photography, it's quite simple: if I see something I like, I take a picture of it. I prefer to tinker with the settings manually on my mirrorless camera, but I've also taken some pretty amazing photos on a dinky late 2000s 5Mp camera from a BlackBerry (that's 1/5th of my mirrorless camera's resolution!), so don't be afraid about not having the right equipment. Just have fun.
When it comes to taking poses for references, it's even simpler: Do I see the light, the shadow, and all the details I need to draw it? Then that's a perfectly good reference photo in my books. It doesn't need to look good, it just needs to be detailed enough for you to draw with. Heck, back when I was first learning how to draw I used my laptop's 720p webcam to take reference pictures. It was a blurry mess, and I had to take close-up shots for the hands, but it was perfectly usable for reference material
Lastly, just like my drawings, I didn't really look at any tutorials for photography. I just tinkered with my mom's camera a bunch (before I got hooked and bought my own) and learned almost all the settings. The only ones I had to look-up was how the aperture, and white-balance settings worked. The rest just felt intuitive enough after a while.
Hope this answered all your questions!

Please CZcams, stop deleting my replies
I guess to recover what my previous comment said:
      1. No, Blender files are pretty small. What you will need is at the very least a PC made sometime in the mid 2010s, as anything older is going to struggle hard, and isn't as fun to play around with
      2. No clue. Everyone's got their strengths and weaknesses. It all depends on how well you can understand something like the famous doughnut tutorial, and proper topology. It gets easier the more you do it, but it's still a complicated little puzzle to solve if you're focused on good topology. Also, don't get me started on rigging and cloth physics. Just stick to 3D props first, and move up from there.
      Photography:
      1. For just standard photography: if it looks good, I take a picture. If it doesn't look good on the camera, play with the settings until it gets as close as possible.
For reference images of poses: as long as I can see all the details, it's good. Lighting doesn't matter, composition doesn't matter. All you should be asking is "can I see what I need to see". For reference (heh), I used my laptop's crappy 720p webcam to take references early on, and that did the job just fine.
      2. No...at least not much. All I did was set the camera to manual mode, and played with the buttons and dials until I had pretty much everything figured-out. Then I looked at tutorials for things I didn't quite understand (like aperture, and white-balance)
Hope that answers your questions, and hopefully CZcams won't delete this reply again.

ROBLOX!! I know it sounds super silly, but theres certain games where you can dress up your avatar (for example Catalog Avatar Creator) and even though its a Lego game, there are soo many detailed clothing items and user made accessories to use. I play the game not only just because its fun, but I love dressing up my character and I use her as a drawing reference pretty often. Other games you might be interested in would be Dress to Impress, which at its heart is a speed fashion game, but there is a freeplay mode and, although ive never played it, I assume it is just free infinite dress up. Unless you want to use your Catalog Avatar Creator outfits on other games, then everything is free! Just make sure to screenshot/save outfits to be able to come back to them. There are also so many detailed games with extensive effort put into the scenery around, and avatar shops exist and you can use those as outfit inspiration too!

I've used the Black Desert Online character creator and poser as a reference a few times. It's a pretty in depth character creator, though it does have limits. You can customize the face and body as well as the expression and pose. It has a good hair editor which has more than just preset hair styles and colors. You can change how long the hair is, how wavy or straight, how it flows etc. It's an MMO so you have to be online and it's a character creator, so you can't pose more than the one character, but it's a pretty good way to make a custom model and pose without needing to learn Blender or search for a character that looks somewhat close to what you want.

I don't really care if the image I'm using as a study/reference is AI or not. I'd rather not have all these AI images gumming up my searches but if I find one of them aesthetically appealing the fact that it's AI is not going to stop me from using it to form a sketch or color palette etc
