Very informative video as usual Mike. Yes Hylomar is OK but going back through the years I've always used Wellseal. It's runny to apply but if you find a small paint brush that will go in the hole in the tube you can paint it on. I always remember going into a motor accessory shop years ago and asking for a tube. "You don't want to use that old fashioned stuff, Hylomar is what everybody uses now". Thinking it had been discontinued I bought a tube but further research resulted in me buying a tube of Wellseal with new logo printing on it. Shows how long I had had the original tube, it's still made now.

I took your advice & fitted 2 gaskets. 100 miles ago. Today I went out & there was a funny rattle from the engine. I laid on top with a screwdriver to my ear & lo & behold the rattle is from the new vacuum pump. I guess the extra gasket has moved the pump away from the cam sufficiently to cause a knock. So tomorrow I’ll have to remove the pump, remove the extra gasket & hopefully the rattle will go. I’ll let you know.

Update. I took the pump off today & removed 1 gasket. The rattle remained however & in fact was worse. I took it off again & found that the damn thing had fallen apart inside. The plunger part & the boss or collar that the plunger sits in had come out of the housing. It appears the 2 grubscrews that secure this assy had vibrated out. I purchased this piece of Chinese junk from a company called LR Spares on ebay.

Hey Mike did you ever decide whether you like the blue Hylomar for softening the gaskets? And do you still recommend two gaskets

Thanks for the great video. Can I just put the new vacuum pump straight in out of the box or should lube it up any where?

Can this job be executed with the engine installed? Any tips or tricks?

Hi - Do we need to lubricate vacuum pump before assembly? Thanks.

  • @christopherastbury-mg2iz

Hi Mike, What is the reasoning behind fitting two gaskets please?

Hey Mike. I've a problem with my starter on 200tdi defender. Basically dropped it and broke the lug of the solenoid. Do u know if a 300tdi is the same solenoid? There's 3 screws in the back of the 200. Thanks

The 200/300 starter unit is the same - BUT there are 3 known manufactures of starters, so I do not know if the solenoids are the same - just had a look at the part numbers and they are all different
      Sorry I can't help much
      Mike

Durite might have the solenoid you need on the shelf. They even do military light switches for Dutch army Lightweights. Also for positive earth vehicles they have voltage rectifiers to go on the bulkhead.
