  • Even with all the non-stop travel, our Passport Heavy crew never found ourselves in Rio De Janeiro Brazil…until now. And what an experience it was! A city bursting at the seams with culture, food, dope views, beautiful people, amazing beaches, plenty of activities and deep history, Rio De Janeiro sure is a city worth experiencing.
    We were naturally on edge after hearing all the stories of how dangerous parts of Rio De Janeiro are, but similarly to Chicago or New York, the danger is a bit overhyped. There may be dangerous parts in the city, but believing the city is dangerous takes away from all the other amazing experiences in the city.
    We had an incredible time in the city, and would like to thank the city of Rio De Janeiro for having us, and letting us experience Brazil. Enjoy this Passport Heavy Cost of Living guide to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

    As a Brazilian myself and a citizen of Rio, it's nice to see an optimistic perception of our country. Brazilians have a habit of just being negative, even though they're mostly right to be mad, it doesn't change anything though. Change starts with acting upon it, not just complaining. But I've always had hope for our country. Maybe one day things can change for the better.

Without watching this video we wouldnt have known about the great things to do such as hangliding and where to explore. I think the biggest takeaway for us was meeting OBI the tour guide. He treated us like family and made sure we had a great time. There was no danger what so ever in the favelas. Nowhere near what people usually have to say about it. Leaving rio was probably the worse pain i’ve felt in a long time

    Great video man! I am half brazilian and half bissau-guinean, and i live in the state of são paulo. I am truly happy to see a black man, along with black friends, get the chance to visit such expensive places in Rio, so they can see that they also need to treat black people with respect. Considering that you are american, you might not have noticed, but brazilian people are really racist, and us, black brazilians, are treated differently in the types of places you went. I am pretty sure you noticed that in the most expensive places, there were only a handful of black people, despite the fact that 50% of the population is black. So, thank you for this, and I hope that you get to visit other places in Brazil!!!

      One drop rule does not apply to Brazil.It's ridiculous.Brazil is not USA.We ve been mixed for generation.There is mixed people all around us.Very diverse when it comes to people background.Life is not black and white.There is a rainbow in between.According to IBGE there is PARDO population which represents over 50% of us.Pardo can be anything.Mixed white/black/indigenous/japanese/lebanase/you name it.If you as pardo says that you a black basically you are denying your other half...

    • @inaciojulio
      @inaciojulio Před 5 lety +117

      @@gersonmatos1251 your response had nothing to do with my previous comment, but let me make things clear for other people that may read this. Firstly, i am not pardo, which could be translated to biracial or mixed race or light skin. You should do your research, because i said i was from Guinea-Bissau, so your first task is to search on the internet about the country... Lol. Secondly, you are writing false information. According to IBGE, negros (in english negroes, which is a word that is not used anymore in the usa, because it may be deemed as offensive) is the word used to describe "pretos" (with the literal translation being "blacks") who are the dark skin people, such as myself; and there is also "pardos", who are more light skin, so for instance, beyonce or alicia keys would be considered "pardas" in Brazil, and according to IBGE, "pardos" are within the major group named as "negroes". So, basically, dark skin people, i.e., blacks are ~10% of the brazilian population; light skin people a.k.a pardos are ~45% of the brazilian population; when you sum both of them, it is 55% of the population, reason why the majority of the population is considered to be negroes, i.e. "black people". Using the people from the video as an example, the chick named livia teresa is light skin, and here in brazil is someone that is considered parda, but as you may have noticed she has super curly hair and other facial caractheristics that "give" her african ancestry, therefore, she is considered black (or in brazil negroes, because here the word is not offensive). People like her comprise 45% of the population and that is undeniable, unless you are living in the south. Now, i got to admit that not every pardo has an african ancestry, with a great number being of native indian ancestry. But nevertheless, the great majority of pardos are of african descent. For instance, the entire family of my fiancee, they are all light skin, but all of them know that they are negroes (blacks). Probably, three or four generations ago, a mixed race relationship happened between a dark skin black and a white person and from that moment on, almost everyone was born light skin, or pardo. But they can't define themselves as mixed race, because all the parents and grandparents are light skin blacks. Now, with all the numbers and explanations that i gave you, if you still wanna believe that there is racial democracy in brazil, start to notice more the reality around you. How many black judges do you know? How many doctors? Dentists? Engineers? How many black presidents Brazil has had? How many governors are/were black? If you go to a restaurant like Outback or Pizza Hut, how many black people will be there? I am black, dark skin, i am lawyer, but i am an exception to the statistics. I work in a major firm with over 30 lawyers and i am the only black. How many black lawyers do you personally know? And from personal experience, i can tell you that i have been followed in restaurants because i am black, people changed sidewalks because i am black, a woman tought i was goind to rob her in the middle of the mall and several other situations that i went through (and family as well). So, i am sorry, but you don't know what you are talking about. Brazil has a high number of racist people and people that, despite not knowing that they are being racist, think that black people should be in an inferior position in the society. There is a LOT OF RACIAL INEQUALITY!

      @@inaciojulio In your comment above you stated that brazilians are racist.Well if they are truly racist.Why there is interracial marriages abound in Brazil.You can not see such a thing in USA and in England where I live.They are far and between.As you stated you said you are half brazilian/half guinea bissau.Sorry I just assumed you had any PARDO or mixed from your braziian side.Yes.I know where Guinea Bissau is(don't be patronizing)I I've been to Gambia and Senegal myself(close to Guinea Bissau) Bijajos Islands must be truly beautiful.I never got the chance to set my foot there myself.But If you live in Brazil and its to racist why are you still there?If think you never be able to understand the complexity of Brazil.Negro is a portuguese word borrowed by the english and it has been twisted along the centuries and turn into something not nice to say the least.But in plain portuguese its just a race like caucasian.I find more deamening someone call another person black(preto)which is really insulting in portuguese.And not Beyonce never would be considered PARDO in Brazil.Her hair is kinky.If you got kinky hair chances are you are black in Brazil.Anita is considered black in England(they are up in arms) but in Brazil she is PARDO .And to contrary believe yes there is mixed(pardo) population in Brazil and it is huge.I only see such a thing in Colombia and Venezuela.But Brazil when it comes to diversity hands down wins.If you want to experience truly OVERT racism GO TO USA.They will tell you to your face.Tjhat's way people(groups)segregated themselves in order to fight that.But it is getting out of a hand now.With the incrising LATINO population.It will surpass in 20 years time the WHITE population in USA.You only see now people with mexican heritage in USA now.California,Texas,Arizona,Florida(huge cuban comunities).New York and the list go on.I think the guy in the video had a great time in Rio despite all the racism.(he did not display that in this video).Maybe because he had the cash to splash....who knows...???

You are correct, no worse then any major city in the U.S. (Chicago, N.Y., L.A., etc) and you conduct yourself the same with where you go and where you don’t go. The next time you and your crew have to visit Salvador, Bahia in the northeast where 60 - 70% of the people have more African heritage and tradition due to the city was a major slave port when Africans were en route to South and North America. Small suggestion : in order to put out more videos maybe you could section out long videos like this one into 3 or 4 shorther vids. You could for example separate food, activities, accomodation, etc... It would allow us to have content from you guys more frequently and it would also drive more people to the channel. But anyways, like always, can't wait for the next one !
