Guiron vs. Space Gyaos comparison

- Looking at three versions of this sequence.
Daiei's original Japanese and English versions are identically edited so I opted to use the hilariously bad Pedro Production export dub in this video. (Sandy Frank/King Features' version made infamous on MST3K is the export version with crappy video credits.)
American International's version, "Attack of the Monsters," reworks the sequence so that Gyaos only retreats off-screen. This was probably necessary to televise the film. The export dub was either unavailable or deemed unsuitable so a crew at Titan Productions, Inc. in New York was hired to re-dub the film.
The Neptune Media release was an attempt to sync the Titan audio to a letterboxed transfer of the film. Neptune creatively uses as much of the dismemberment footage as possible without reverting to the Japanese or export version's dialogue. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I love how the kids are unphased by the sheer brutality and horrifying sight this would actually be
Which just goes to show how unnecessary the edited version was. Even in universe they could tell it was only cartoon violence.
I love how today's kids get so easily terrified with fake mutilation. I remember 6yo me watching Ultraman decapitating monsters and not really being scared because even then I was aware it was all just rubber parts of a costume.

Yes
Kids back then like me were made of tougher stuff lol
These kids just stared blankly and calmly as they just watched a monster get sliced and diced by a knife monster.... These children are the true definition of fear itself...
I mean it looks stupid as hell so it's no wonder why they weren't scared. I'd be laughing my ass off

Gyaos: Yes I have!
Guirion: Look!
Gyaos: It's just a flesh wound!
Gyaos continues to attack.
Guirion: Look. Stop that.
Gyaos: Chicken, Chicken.
Guiron: Let's see how you deal with this! (Chops Gyaos' head off)
Gyaos: Shoulda quit while I was ahead.
My thoughts exactly
Wow! I was not expecting Gyaos to be completely dismembered. I've only ever watched the version where Gyaos flies off after losing it's leg.
So did I.
Me too
Guiron should moved to Earth, and open a delicatessen. He made some good cold cuts out of Gyos.
1:29 Guiron’s cruel chuckle
Bowser eating a microphone and laughing:
Honestly one of the most horrifying sounds you could hear a Kaiju make. It laughing while it viciously murders everyone.

Always thought the Neptune version made the kids seem a little less sociopathic with their reserved, silent observations lmao.
I feel that having them silently watching the monster battle and the subsequent mutilation of Gyaos makes this introduction of Guiron more dramatic. When they're commenting on what's going on the scene seem like an Itchy and Scratchy fight. But when they're just watching quietly you get more of a feeling that they're both scared and in awe of the alien kaiju they're seeing.
"You know, guys, this movie is kind of weird."
Yeah it's kinda goofy
When I was a kid I don’t remember seeing the butchering part. They didn’t show that part at all on 80s Saturday morning TV.
Gayos just flew away after his own reflected laser removed one leg.

When I was a kid we only saw the 2nd vers where Gyaos flew off after losing his leg. I also thought he was a new version of Rodan!
In Gamera vs Gyaos, the creature could in fact regenerate damaged/missing parts.
They're not the same creature.
Space gyaos not same with regular gyaos?
This 1 probably didn't have time to.
This one aint gonna have to regenerate. Guiron sliced and diced it into small chunks for a Gyaos soup.
The head went glitching as it screams after decapitated meaning it died
I remember the first time I saw this movie where it was different where after Guiron cut off Gyaos' leg with it's own beam attack the Gyaos did retreat and Guiron returned to his underground lair.
We made very accurate and to scale hand and suspension puppets of Godzillaverse monsters, in High School.
The grading of the project sucked but NOT the years of home fun for dozens of kids and adults.
Guiron....and THIS specific video clip...were favorites. The dismembering we created and other hellish events,
were never film canon, we went beyond.
I remember the edited version. You have allowed my childhood to be relived and validated. Subscribing !

My prayers and thoughts are with those little children and I hope they are well.
This is brutal death.imagine we were cut by this brutal knife monster guiron
I think he's going to return to his home
What a monster.
I don't know why, but I think I like THAT version of the fight best.
This was the first Gamera movie I saw. Remember getting excited when my dad brought home 3 of the VHS tapes. Watched Gamera vs Guiron first, and was literally in shock & awe as to how violent it was compared to the Godzilla movies
This was my first Gamera, too, although I already had “Gammera the Invincible” on tape. (Don’t recall watching that until after “Guiron,” but I digress.)
What really weirded me out at the time was Shunsuke Kikuchi’s eerie music as the kids wandered around the seemingly-unoccupied alien base. Those scenes really got under my skin in a way Godzilla and Toho movies didn’t, largely because of the music. Oh to be 8 again.
I saw this in the 70s on WWOR ch 9 in the tri-state area. Showed it uncut. Including the two alien girls talking about eating the two kids’ brains!
I watched it on same station ! Born and raised in the tristate area still live there I remember these came on Saturday and Sunday afternoon
Monster week!! On the 4:30 movie on ABC back in the 70's as a kid was the best!! Wonderful memories.
That laugh Guiron does after brutally executing Gyaos probably gave many kids nightmares
Since both Gyoas and Guiron are going to be in Gamera Rebirth, I wonder if they’ll fight each over again.
Spoiler alert(Unless you already watched it)
It didn't happened

Was wondering why I remember Gyaos getting sub zeroed when I was a kid but now my daughter is into these showa era movies. She has the version of without were gyaos flies away before the decapitation
So she saw the brutal murder? I was old enough to be grossed out but still awed by it.
@@Irrelevant402 No she has the one where he flies away. I seen him get decapitated
You’re daughters missing out
"I guess it's too smelly to eat" - I've said that to myself once or twice.
Jesus and they targeted this movie towards kids, Gyaos literally got chopped into a meat pie
It's about as gruesome as a Tom and Jerry short, so I don't think this violence in a children's film is a big deal.
The H-Man neither do I man, but I don’t know just wow
This is no comparison to Tom and Jerry.
Hear you see literal murder with flesh and blood.
"literal murder with flesh and blood"
Yeah, the "murder" of a ridiculous man-in-suit monster whose blood is purple. It's not remotely realistic, nor is it really framed in a sadistic or disgusting way (although your mileage may vary regarding the latter).
@@TheHMan but inst the same gyoas on earth mostly a space one

Gyaos has a earrape roar
It's actually pretty messed up how much joy Guiron takes in dismembering Gyaos and mutilating his corpse.
So, Space Gyaos survived in the AI-TV cut instead of being chopped to pieces by Guiron
And then contracted Chuck Cunningham Syndrome.
Imagine something like that really existed in nature and the same size as a rhino
Gurion would totally have the best sushi and sashimi joint
Gyaos' roar is so haunting
The super-low quality English dub that you can find everywhere on budget DVD's is the one where the decapitation scene is cut out. On Millcreek's Gamera box set the scene as well as the Japanese audio is left intact.

This was the movie dad showed me as a kid in the 90s that taughtnme to respect Guiron. He's been my favorite Kaiju outside of the Godzilla franchise which I was more into than Gamera. Actually I was blown away that there were so many kaiju franchises as a 90s kid in Japan after I saw this. I had thought it was just Godzilla.

Gyaos appears to be made of purple yam.
And also barugon

Seeing those two kids brought back hella memories i used to love watching this back To back
Anyone find it funny that the Space Gyaos lost it's right leg in an almost identical way that the Gyaos on Earth did only with the Earth born Gyaos he lost the toes on his right leg while the Space Gyaos lost his whole right leg beneath the knee.
and gyaos also lost its right leg to gamera in rebirth

The fact that the image editing techniques used for this movie were kept to a minimum seems like a message to all modern movie makers.

A little off topic but..
Does that mean there's at least two or at least three different English dubs of this film?
There are two different English dubbed versions, and both are available in the recent Arrow Films box set.
The first one here was commissioned by Daiei, probably pretty shortly after the film was completed. It's sometimes referred to as the "Sandy Frank dub," because Frank was the producer who released that version in the U.S. much later (1987). But in actuality, he had nothing to do with the dubbing of this film. The dubbing is uncredited but it's extremely similar to another Daiei film's dub, "The Falcon Fighters" (also 1969), which is credited to Pedro Komiyama. Komiyama did some bit parts in Japanese cinema during the early '60s, so I'm pretty sure this version of "Gamera vs. Guiron" was dubbed in Japan.
The second one is an entirely different dub, produced by Titan Productions (of New York) for American International Television.
When Neptune Media released the film on VHS in 1999, they decided to sync the audio from the Titan Productions dub to the letterboxed video of the Japanese version. They also restored as much of this Gyaos scene as they could. They couldn't restore the entire sequence, however, because Titan never dubbed the few dialogue exchanges between the boys in this scene.
@@TheHMan is Sandy Frank the "Pedro Productions" dub?
Yes, that's the version Sandy Frank's company released.
