    In Chile, the murderous past under dictator general Augusto Pinochet is slowly coming under scrutiny. With new evidence of extermination camps, the families of the disappeared are yearning for justice.
    "I started to testify and began to get rid of those pangs of guilt", confesses Jorgelino Vergara. Aged only 15, Jorgelino worked as waiter at the secret Simon Bolivar extermination centre witnessing horrific torture and murder. More than 3000 people were kidnapped and killed after the army general seized power in 1973. After a long investigation, charges are being laid against more than seventy people accused of involvement in the brutality at Simon Bolivar. One of them is a member of the much feared Lautaro Brigade, Adriana Rivas. From the safety of her Australian exile, she denies charges but her views on torture remain chilling: "Everyone knew they had to do that in order to break them because Communists would not talk. It was necessary". The secrets and brutality of the Pinochet regime are laid bare at Santiago's memory museum. The daughter of one of Rivas' victims, who was beaten to a pulp and then injected with a lethal poison, is now a curator there. As she fights for remembrance and justice, she wonders: "How can a human being be part of this machinery of exterminating people?"

    The school of the Americas, the military in so many latin American countries; the CIA sending operatives to my country Uruguay to train the military in torture techniques which were to be used against its innocent civilians. So many innocent people throughout Latin America were kidnapped, tortured, murdered and a great deal are still missing. The families of their missing loved ones still have no closure. Babies taken from pregnant woman who were tortured and murdered. Their babies were rehoused with the persons who committed the torture. Families are still looking for their loved ones including their grand children. The pain is still raw for these families and the pain never goes away. As a Uruguayan myself my parents lived in Uruguay during these times. Never again✊🇺🇾

      “Once at the prison camp, agents questioned Ayress for hours to gain information about liberal intelligence. She refused to answer and suffered immense torture. Ayress’s torture began with nude beatings. Agents yelled insults at her while they beat her. They screamed, “Speak, red dog, or we will shoot your father and brother in front of you!” Each day her torture worsened. Agents sliced her skin and burnt her with cigarettes. Then they hung her from the ceiling and crammed tree limbs and coke bottles into her vagina and anus. As the days passed Ayress endured more gruesome treatment. Tortures stripped her naked and placed her on metal bedsprings where they shocked her tongue and vagina. Guards employed animals to conduct torture on Ayress and forced her to endure rape by Dobermans. They also shoved starved rats into her vagina. She screamed as the rats ripped and tore their way out. Guards raped Ayress over 40 times and consequently she became pregnant. She feared that if her tortures learned of her pregnancy she would face maniacal experimentation on her fetus. She kept quiet about her pregnancy but as a result of endless torture miscarried.”

      “Conditions at the camp were designed to break down the sense of humanity of the prisoners. Ayress was frequently held incommunicado in a cell about six feet by six feet. Food came infrequently and then was thrown on the floor, where she was forced to eat like an animal on all fours. Most days a guard took her to a latrine at 6 a.m. Since she had no soap and no way to heal the burns and cuts thac created open wounds all over and inside her body, she had massive infections. The shackling, electro shocks, and rapes were standard fare, but the torturers outdid themselves with bestiality. They trained Boxers to rape women, and with Nieves Ayress and others, they introduced mice into the vagina, where the terrified rodents ripped and bit in their attempts to get out.”
      “By crafting a story over which she had control, rather than simply portraying a victim, Ayress and her friend began a campaign that has continued with increasing vigor to this day.”

    I've been living in Chile for 3 years. The museo de la memoria where they describe the atrocities done by the regimen makes you sick, the level of evil is right up there with the Nazis. And still today the military and right wing people in Chile straight up deny everything that has happened. They say "le pusieron color", they say that comunists tell a worse story than it is, they really believe that the little that was done to prisoners was necessary and not as bad as history remembers. This lady in the video is not alone when she says it was the best time of her life. These people really think that extreme violence is accepted and normal and would do it again if they had the chance. I really can't understand how so many people are let living free after all that has happened only 30 years ago. And at the same time, on the other side there are pleanty comunists and left wing people who would love to do the same things to their enemies, you can see it in their eyes when they tell you about how they hate everyone with a different idea then theirs. This country is rotten in hate.

    Broader left wing people and leaders have been of all kinds. Pol Pot was completely different to Ho Chi Minh. Nicolas Maduro and Evo Morales are not the same either; nor Toma Sancara was the same as Muammar Gandaffi. There have been brutal and murderous left wing dictatorships, but also brutal pro - American ones; USA has perpetrated not only bombings, but also coups and proxy wars costing millions of lives. Let's not even start about western colonialist crimes and their death counts; just think the Belhians in Congo, hanging children in front if their parents for not meeting the daily quota. There are also western leaders partly leftist, who have done wonders with consciously choosing specific left - wing policies and not all. And even nominally communist parties who rule with free elections, such as this of Nepal. In everday life, you can find a lot of kind - heartead people and intellectualls in the broader left of centre, because they identify with some of the causes, such as children welfare and workers rights. But can't find any good nazis or fascists, because their causes are awful two. The healthy among former dream of a world where your status the moment or birth means absolutely nothing, while the latter want your skin colour during birth or the mother tongue you speak to mean everything.

    I was an American Mormon missionary in Santiago in 1979-80 and actually heard Pinochet speak one time in a town called San Fernando. Fundamentally, I’ve always believed in capitalism, but it was in Pinochet’s Chile that I saw how laissez-faire policies tend to chew up and spit out entire classes of people. I never saw much evidence of leftist opposition, although it had to have existed. I remember that a carabinero was killed at Cerro Santa Lucia one time by leftists who were symbolically trying to extinguish “la llama de la libertad,” but such instances were rare. That Sr. Ortiz was tortured and killed in 1976, three years after the coup, seems weird; it can’t really be argued that DINA’s activities had any strategic importance by that time. In total, I can’t say that Pinochet was good for Chile, but at least Allende and the communists were thwarted in their plans to turn it into a second Cuba. It was always understood, even when I was there, that Chile would eventually have free elections again (though it took another decade). Will that happen in Cuba again anytime soon?

    Now do you see why we never allow alleged criminals to testify on their own behalf. Because they would succeed in gullotting themselves with seemingly abberant aplomb like Adriana did at 19:35. She defended her actions already when she defended the regime with talk of how that level of violence was needed to break the communists like Hitler did. Really, really bad. She did it: you cannot expect that she is guilty even when she uses language like that. And you cannot expect that she is innocent just because Chile is having difficulty raising the warrant of extradition with Australia. Complex isn't it.

    • @SergyMilitaryRankings
      @SergyMilitaryRankings Před rokem

      That's false, it wasn't a brutal regime at all, that's US propoganda, like the US tried to make out as though Korea was about fighting tyranny when south Korea was a dictatorship aswell but wasn't communist, same with Vietnam, Vietnam was holding elections and the communist party was spreading, the US learned it was going to win, so they intervened and made out that the north was attacking the south when it wasn't, the people wanted communism.
      There's a reason every communist country either gets sanctioned into oblivion or invaded, the US cannot let communism look good, because any form of communism completely removes the 0.1% power and gives it to the people.

      Fidel was a horrible leader. Salvador Allende was a bit better but if he had control of Chile for over 50 years like Fidel who knows what the country would look like. We don't know if Allende or Pinochet would have been better for Chile overall but Pinochet was a madman and if I had lived in Chile at that time I would probably have been tortured and killed like many others (I have a big mouth when it comes to politics). We know of 3,000 victims but I have heard estimates that he had up to 20,000 of his opponents tortured and killed. Whatever the number, may all of Pinochet's victims RIP.
