I honestly think Harlan County, USA is the greatest documentary ever made.

Fantastic speech Barbara Kopple gave. I saw Harlan County USA and it still resonates today.

Just watched it today. So real. I doubt something like it could happen today.

I watched this film at school. Pretty moving, but I can't imagine how far Barbara Kopple and her film crew went to document these events on a motion picture documentary.

I lived in Harlan as a child. On 4/28/1978 I was hit by a drunk driver. The tire ran over my head and crushed my skull to this day 40 years later I still have repercussions from that accident the man who hit me name is Ronnie woodsby If I remember correctly

I don't care if she was a Communist, a Fascist, or a raging Socialist....Lillian Hellman wrote some amazing plays, and that's why I respect her--for her work.
Oh, and Harlan County--what an awesome documentary!! :)

Lillian Hellman's hair was always amazing! She wasn't a pretty woman but she made the most of her hair.

I guess the producers assumed Hollywood on Trial would win. Fortunately the voters made the right choice and picked the best documentary ever.

You know nothing about me and that is your reply. My son defends your right of free speech and expression. Sadly, people who claim to be progressive are among those who are the most intolerant of others. God Bless.

bonscott01: 1. Our country has free speech protected by the first amendment.
    2. You must be very prosperous and powerful not to be able to sympathize with the suffering, hard-working classes of people such as coal miners. 3. If you were to experience true hardship you might eventually develop understanding of people who are devoted to telling the story of impoverished, oppressed people and their spokespeople.

...a terrible alcoholic and chain smoker till ten minutes after she died...but a great play writer and human rights advocate.
