Dream of having this album in vinyl, such a masterpiece... "I will be there" always takes me to a better place. Hopefully her music gets available soon in Brazil
I discovered this singer a week ago while leafing through the list of songs produced by Richard X (who produced excellent songs for singers that I love like Sophie Ellis-Bextor or Annie). I didn't like Funky Dory at all, but I really loved Come And Get It. I wasn't a fan of "It's All About Me", Je M'Appelle" & "Every Little Thing" but it's okay. I loved some songs of the album like "I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)", "Crazy Boys", "Secret Garden", "Nothing Good About This Goodbye", "Some Girls" & Dumb Dumb. Special mention for "So Good" & "I Will Be There" & "Negotiate With Love" that i fell in love with. But "Funny How" is probably one of my favorite song of all time. Even 16 years later, we can discover some really good pop albums like this, and I'm very happy for that.
It still disappoints me this wasn’t as huge as it should have been , pop masterpiece, every track could have been a single , still listen to come and get it and funky dory on the regular , and imagine the video she would have done for nothing in common 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️
totally! It happened the same with hilary duff breathe in breath out or holly valance album... carly rae jepsen Emotion... really good pop and really underrated albums.
Such a shame this isn’t available for streaming. All her solo singles are catchy pop tunes. One only wonders what a third album could’ve been like… thank you so much for your little documentaries ❤️ greetings from germany
Thank you so much for this! You did so well with this. As such a big Rachel fan, and as a lover of this album, I love watching this video. I just bought a ticket to Mighty Hoopla in London June 2023 to see Rachel perform! As a US fan who’s never seen any S Club 7 members perform, I’m so excited to see my favorite. I’m so glad she’s coming back to the stage! Now for album number 3!
British pop music was peaking at that time. So many timeless tracks. This is still a fantastic album, such an infectious fizzy energy and classy production. I always hated the cover though, it’s like the worst photo ever taken of her.
When I heard Don’t negotiate on the radio the first time I thought that it was Madonna singing. I also thought it was gonna be a massive hit. I was wrong on both counts, kind of a shame really. With groups like SClub7 I think they should try making Albums where they mix up the lineup for different songs, rather than disbanding. I know KPop has its share of problems with how labels treat members but I think there is success in having bigger groups sometimes split off into sub units without actually having the entire group disband. If done fairly this could give one half of the group some time off and then switch it round before all getting back as one to release a main album with songs featured from the subunits included.
You make incredible documentaries! I had such a blast watching this piece on Come and Get It. I am from the US, so some of the video footage I had never seen before. I remember replaying this album all the time in late 2005 and could never understand why it didn’t take Rachel to new heights in pop music. I think your analysis at the end was really insightful. Thanks for the b-side snippets too.
I’ll consider it, if there’s enough material online. Sometimes I want to do a documentary on something but there just isn’t enough video stuff to pull together to make it worthwhile.
You’re doing a great work with these videos. This album is criminally underrated. No fillers only bangers and singles material. I do think though that Negotiate was a bad choice as a first single (although I love it), there are stronger tracks. I Said Never Again is my favorite. Greetings from Lebanon 🇱🇧
This is such a solid album. Stronger than anything collection Dannii Minogue, Holly Valance, or any member of the Spice Girls have released as solo artists. It's quite baffling how the album's weakest song was released as the lead single. It charted because Rachel was still riding off of the high of Some Girls. It gave the album a slow, tentative start that not even the awesome So Good can help recover from. Unfortunately, the album's better songs - Funny How, Dumb Dumb, and even Secret Garden never got the single treatment. Such a brilliant, cohesive collection of dance tracks that unfortunately remain unheard by most of the world that deserves to enjoy it.
Rachel shoulda had a better and longer solo career, at least just like Cheryl. Nothing Good About This Goodbye would make a great single at that time. For me, So Good is Rachel's best single, the melody on chorus is amazing
Seems like a very nice girl but the whole package felt rather like imposter syndrome because the music did not suit the girl or image. It just felt very manufactured like Rachel was just given the songs and told to sing them. She didn’t have the attitude to match. But good for her she gave it a good go with some good to moderate success. The sound is very Girls aloud and Kylie. This was a good documentary. Very well done. I enjoyed it.
Shame you didn't find Madonna quote from late 2005 when she said that she and her daughter listened to this album a lot. I mean she didn't name album she said Rachel Stevens, but I doubt they were listening to Funky Dory in late 2005 lol
I don't really think it failed because of management - Rachel has done nothing since to indicate she is secretly anything other than nice and polite. The fact that her management kept the faith for two albums and continued to score high profile gigs for her when similar acts would have been firmly in the dumper shows they did try hard for her.
Just my opinion. We will never know for sure I guess. It’s just a shame they didn’t try and promote the album more or maybe allow another single to try and get more people interested in the record. Ah well, thanks for watching!
@@popunderrated I think that maybe, with hindsight, 'Negotiate....' was a mistake, and maybe going with 'Nothing Good....' might have sold the album better. I first album being pretty weak probably didn't help, and she didn't sing live in a period when it was suddenly seen as hugely important. It was also just a really hard period for pop music of any variety - Girls Aloud, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Holly Valance all struggled with strong albums.
@@popunderrated I love Negotiate With Love, it's probably my favoruite, but I agree that So Good would have had more mainstream commercial appeal as a lead single. Even I Will Be There would have been a good lead single.
Nothing in Common should have been included on the album. It would have been beyond perfect! Hopefully in an alternate universe this album gets redemption
the only success is the song that Geri wanted....and brushing against Geri, for Richard X, Annie and Rachel, this was a good promotion, probably... what a bore!
Rachel who??? I don't know her. Everything was fine when they were a band, but going solo, her??? Oh no, please. Ridiculous. She was one of the many and never unique or stand-out. An average singer, typically sexual kind of image, nothing new or fresh at least. What was all the point in going solo? Money? Perhaps. Am watching this film out of curiosity and not out of love for Rachel. Why would great producers waste their time producing this lady? ... 🤔🙄
Happy for you to have an opinion but I spent a lot of time putting this video together a) because I am a fan of Rachel and her music and b) because many others are too. Please be a little more respectful with your comments.
I agree, her music was good and she looked great so I can only think it's because she was too nice and lacked that punchy attitude that might have helped people relate to her. Plus she was up against Xtina, Britney and Beyonce who all had a headstart on her which is why I think she didn't have as much success as she deserved. I think had we got to know the real Rachel it might have been a different story.
Dream of having this album in vinyl, such a masterpiece... "I will be there" always takes me to a better place. Hopefully her music gets available soon in Brazil
ahh um br aqui
This is one of my favourite pop albums of all time. I hope it gets a vinyl treatment too! I really dream that plasticpop records will make it happen.
Come & Get it is still & will always be my favourite album of all time! I wish the charts were nicer to her 😞
This is honestly the definition of a underrated album, Nothing Good About This Goodbye is one of the best pop songs of the 00s.
Very short career, but the second album is a good one. I love "Secret Garden" and "Funny How". My favourites tracks of the album.

this album is apparently available on spotify worlwide as of a few days ago! i adore it with all my heart, one of the best albums of all time!

One of my all time faves
Love Rachel so much
I hope you do one on S Club 7, a tribute to Paul Cattermole at least. Who sadly pass away this year in April😢
I love her. Thanks for this documentary, good work.
Truly underrated !! Great mini doc ! Can you do Holly Valances State of Mind ?

The lore behind Some Girls it's actually more exciting than the final result. Rachel it's a nice a girl but Girls Aloud or Geri would have smashed it
I so enjoyed this video. "Come and Get It" is my all time favorite album!
excellent deep dive-have really been enjoying your videos today. Love the detail in them. Such nostalgia from my childhood/teens- thank you.
Thank you 🙏
She did have a good sound! She had a very Cheryl, girls aloud sort of sound. Very very cool.
haha actually is the other way around, this album was released in 2003, cheryl albums were released after 2010...
@@marcelosaietti8277 yeah I know the time line, was saying she sounded similar to Cheryl. Cheryls solo stuff was well after Rachels.
Nothing in Common is so wonderful. It's a crime it was never released anywhere.

New fan of your channel, Brilliant video!
Love this album so much!!!!
My favorite pop album of all time ❤️
Nothing Good About This Goodbye is genius.
A really enjoyable watch. I wasn’t into the albums. But this doc has me streaming. Work well done.
Thanks!
This is a very well-researched and well-put-together video.
I wonder how Rachel Stevens would have followed up her 2nd album. I wish she would have been given one more chance.

Thanks for watching. I agree to an extent but Rachel did co-write some of these songs. I just think perhaps she was too nice for the industry.
One of the best dance pop album

😂 oh really? If you ever find the quote let me know
Iconic record
would you be able to do documentaries on Girls Aloud and B*Witched please
There is a full B*Witched one on my channel.
