Barbara Heidenreich with Groucho the Singing Parrot on the Tonight Show

- I was on the Tonight Show in 2000 with Groucho, the singing parrot. There was a writer’s strike, and animals became frequent guests for talk shows. He was a companion parrot that was donated to the company I was working for at the time. Groucho sings seven songs. He came to the company already singing the songs. While there, some of them were put on cue, and he learned to sing in new environments, like on TV. He was selective about who he would train with, and I was one of the trainers he liked. He is the third parrot, so watch the whole thing! Unfortunately, the audio has a few issues I can't fix.
I have my own parrot who talks and sings. I trained him using information you can find here on my channel.

Groucho was easily the winner. Very clear and easy to understand. The fact that he knew seven songs is incredible. I would love to have heard some of the other songs.
It's so amazing these parrots can actually mimic the vibrato when they are singing, too!

The way these birds didn't get upset with all of Leno's hand waving and moving around was an art in itself.
I was just waiting for one of these parrots to bite the heck out of Leno's constantly waving hands! He was
annoying ME, and he wasn't even doing it in MY face!

These birds are more on key than many people!!
Amazons, African Greys, and McCaws are the BEST!!! I've personally raised over 300 and I've rescued over 2500 and it never, ever gets old!

I saw Poncho on Johnny Carson years earlier when he was 12 years old. I was hoping to hear his age here. Jay Leno wouldn't shut up long enough for the trainer to say.
Barbara, you handled Jay's pervy behavior really well. He didn't touch the other participants, but his hands were all over you from the start. Let's hope future generations of Innocents don't have to deal with such smut.
Thankfully this is 12 years old but man is he cringy and gross.
The yellow nape is such a beautiful birdie. So elegant.

Does he make me look good? Maybe...but I think what he really does is help people see how amazing parrots are. Which I think is an important goal. Helping people love parrots is the first step in getting them to care about their welfare and status in the wild.

This video clip is from 2000 when I was an employee of the company mentioned. I was one of several trainers who worked with groucho on a daily basis doing conservation education presentations primarily in zoos. So nope....he was not borrowed : )

that first trainer should know what song the bird is actually singing... the song isn't "about a day" it's "oh what a beautiful morning" from the musical Oklahoma
I use to take my blue front in the shower with me..he LOVED it!!! It cuts down on the smell also..If you are not able to handle him yet they have shower perches with suction cups..just transfer him that way...or even a spray bottle thats never had anything in it would work too.

I do have birds of my own. One I have had for over 20 years and I love them all dearly. Many of them can be seen in my materials about training parrots.

Barbara: I was hoping to access your web site, but it wouldn't go through for me.---I had a teacher, in North Dakota 1958, named Heidenreich, and wondered how common that name is. She eventually married and moved to, Maine I think. I don't have more information than that. ---It was a joy to see your name in this amazing clip!

All Amazon Parrots. No surprise. I have been around many kinds of parrots and none are as happy to sing as any variety of Amazon. Their name tells you where they come from.
That blond bird keeper is a better comedian than Leno
