    The curse of the 5. Suikoden, Breath of Fire, Wild Arms. If your series can get past part 5, it can go anywhere. But that 5 can kill series...

      I didn't mean this comment as a fact that they sucked (although, BoF DQ...), but mostly that they stopped for some reason. Suiko 5 is excellent, and although I didn't finish Wild Arms 5, I liked what I played. Let's just pretend that Breath of Fire 6 doesn't exist for everyone's mental health...

    i loved wild arms 4 and 5. their battle system and aesthetic is something very unique and enjoyable. theres still so much room in the market for games like those, especially with the wild west theme. im surprised no other notable jrpg has taken that theme ever since.

    • @DSan-kl2yc
      @DSan-kl2yc Před 6 lety

      Matty K the battle system wasn't bad. It just didn't add too much either. But you could tell they wanted movement in the fighting neither the even more unnecessary movement of 3 that was uncontrollable

    • @_mako
      @_mako Před 6 lety +1

      D. San it didn't have to bring too much. Whatever it brought made it unique enough. Every battle was like a mini tactical battle, and I loved the involvement of manual movement, because it made the games that much more interactive. Plus, it made sense. Just standing in front of the enemy waiting for your turn to act made final fantasy's characters up till FFX look stupid. Not to mention, it was hella boring. Movement adds such a large amount of possibilities, and wild arms 4/5 nailed that by bringing tactics into the regular battles.

    • @Nyonics
      @Nyonics Před 6 lety

      I played 4 and quit near the end b/c I decided grinding levels over and over to spend at the black market wasn't worth it. I don't think I fought the final boss, but I got to the final dungeon, saw what kind of grinding I'd have to do to 100% the game, and moved on to the other game I had gotten around the same time. My biggest problem with 4 though was that tools got absolutely wrecked in that game. They used to be a huge part of what made the series fun in terms of exploration and map interaction. I could live with the hex battles, but no tools ruined it for me. I loved the tools in 2 and 3. 4 just...got rid of that, for no reason. And after seeing 4, I never played 5.

    • @_mako
      @_mako Před 6 lety +1

      Nyonics I don't know how tools were used in 1-3 but four definitely had objects you needed to carry around, which were called tools. And in 5 those were replaced by different kinds of special bullets in your ARM which you carried around on the field all the time.

    • @Nyonics
      @Nyonics Před 6 lety

      Yeah, 4 had "tools." They were garbage compared to the earlier games. IIRC in WA4 you could potentially find one of three objects in any given dungeon that you'd have to use within that same room to solve a bland puzzle. In the earlier games, each character gets 3 unique tools that can be used an infinite number of times to interact with the environment at any time.
      A plain example: one character in WA2 gets the kick boots, bombs, and the earthquake. The first lets you kick things--you can kick blocks to solve switch puzzles, kick a computer to make it work (was even in a magazine ad for the game), etc. The bombs are pretty self-explanatory--blow stuff up, including breakable walls and barriers, or used to activate certain kinds of switches. The earthquake destroys all breakable objects in whatever room you use it in. Another character in the same game had the grappling hook, rad blades, and jump shoes--which let you grapple across pits, speed across floor tiles that normally damage you upon contact (e.g. lava), and high jump, respectively. Somebody had a radar tool that would locate chests and other secrets for you, somebody had a bell that would instantly summon an encounter, somebody had a familiar that could hover a certain radius away from them to activate switches or open unreachable chests, etc.
      And there were cool tools like this in the first 3 WA games that were used WELL to enrich map interaction and puzzle-solving. Compared to them, WA4's "tools" were a cruel joke. It's okay though--you didn't know what you were missing out on so nobody can blame you for not knowing what you didn't know.

    And a shame, because it had some great ideas and took a completely different approach to classical RPG themes (the Wild West for Filgaia's sake!). Sure, it has magic, super lost technology, and primordial forces summoned at the cost of the lives of people, but damn! The Filgaia multiverse (hinted in Wild Arms 2 and clearly stated in XF) is a cool thing indeed. Love its lore.

    Really loved the Original Wild Arms, I felt like I was playing an old school shonen anime with mysterious demonic bosses and heroes with guns, Robots and magic.
    I liked how the 3 heroes all feel like main characters instead of one spiky haired protagonist and his posse amd it really felt like the stakes were high from the beginning instead of the MC doing something small and then finding out a conspiracy later on whicj is what most RPGs did at the time.
    Wild Arms 2 was ok too but I guess it focused more on having a power ranger theme, I didnt like it as much as the first one.

    I'd not say XF had balancing issues, quite the contrary the balancing was great and required lots of outside of the box thinking, while not relying on the player having metaknowlwde about what classes would be most relevant for the upcomming encounter since the way the class system worked enabled you to practically become max level version of whatever primary class you pick. The difficulty was treated more like a puzzle game and the only stats you increased with leveling were HP and MP everything else was equipment and your class, sort of like FF V or bravely default.

    I actually very much enjoyed the first 3 games of Wild Arms, I need to buy another copy of the first one as I used to own it, lent it to a friend, and he pretty much destroyed the disk. I was so angry with him, I own the second one which I'm not letting anyone borrow it, as I bought it back in 1999 when it first came out here and loved it, and I still have that copy and it still works 21 years later. Unlike some of my friends I treat my video games and video consoles with proper respect. The third one I round up renting it one day thinking it wasn't going to be as good as the first two but decided to give it a go, and I was very much enjoying it. The fourth one I played a demo of it and hated it, I did not like the battle setup... and I had no idea that they had done a 5th one until like 6 years ago. Maybe one day I'll track down a copy and try it, not guaranteeing that I will but... maybe.

    Personally, my all time favs were Wild Arms 2 and Alter Code: F. I checked to see if there were any new games for the series a few years ago and learned the sad news too. I'm amazed that they didn't do well. Though it contained the same formula as most JRPGs, it told the story in its own unique and interesting way in a theme very few games touch on. I'm not a huge fan of mobile games, but I'll look out for this one.

    Sad to know that wild arms 2 was never released in Europe. It has one of the nicest BG music in RPG PS1 era. Even though developers weren't able to animate some of the major events in the game. A cheap FMV would do it at the time but they chose to do it with stills.

    I feel sad now cause I never knew about the Wild Arms 1 remake in North America. I really liked Wild Arms 1. It was a great RPG and I liked the old school 2D look of the game outside the battles. My only complaint is they didn't make the whole game look 2D. You could do some amazing 2D sprite work on the PS1. If I had known about the PS2 remake I would have bought it in a flat second. I can still play Wild Arms 1 on my PS Vita though.

      I love Wild Arms 2. Like it one of my favorite jrpgs of all time. It's kind of a first jrpg ever played but when I was younger I only had disc 1 I only just found a used copy about 4 years ago I played through it and loved it. I think extremely highly of Wild Arms 2 but in reality it's probably like a B+ game
      I also got Wild Arms 3 somewhere around 4 years ago and it might be good but I have retry this game around three times and I always get lost somewhere extremely early. With Wild Arms 3 im lost to the point where I don't even know where I'm trying to go so a walkthrough wouldn't really help me. I like 2 high enough that I really want to like 3 I have kept playing the game for years trying to make progress and I actually did make some progress but then immediately got lost again.
      I think the problem is that the world is to big and locations do not exist until you talk to the right person

      That's the problem I had with 3 as well. I put it down for a bit and when I came back I couldn't remember which area I was supposed to search in. I notice a lot of games in the last decade or so will have a diary of some sort to remind players where they're supposed to go next.

    I never really drew myself to Wild Arms like many did. I recently prior to playing Wild Arms 1 had played FF7 and when I played WA I was very unhappy with the in-battle character models and did not like the animation style of the battles in the first game. I very quickly, and unfairly, turned the game off before I ever gave it a chance. Wild Arms 2 looks and sounds like a winner and I have never played it either nor had I tried any of the associative titles in this series. Looking back, I clearly missed out and regret it. I am making it a requirement to go back to this series and get right what I did not years ago. Great video, very informative, but sad we are now chewing a mobile game as the most recent title in the series :-(

    Wild Arms is one of the greatest RPG series and I am so sad that it was not as well received and well known as other RPGs because now, looking back. I love it. I wish it was still around because it has some things now are missing. Good design, complex characters, complex stories that don't rely on constantly screwing with your mind.
    Games 1-3 are all good, great games. Perhaps 1 and 2 are a little technologically behind since they are on such old systems, but they have solid great design. Wild Arms 3 and Code F don't show their age at all. I think they still look great even now. Beyond that, they are very well designed. There's flexibility in your team and everyone learns their special skills in different ways or just has their own innate skills, it's great
    4's Hex system was strange and perhaps a poor choice since it was such a drastic change, but it wasn't bad, not really.
    I.... I honestly don't like 5 much because I feel like it took a really drastic change from the Western setting and the characters seemed a bit tropeier than I remember. Idiot hero, mysterious waif, stone-cold badass, cute robot girl all the typical anime traits are there. Plus it's a bit more techno than the old games since a lot of emphasis is placed on the golems and technology as a whole, with some cities even looking like they are from a Sci-Fi setting, which most Wild Arms games save for the final dungeon

I can't imagine having nostalgia for Wild Arms 3. I remember playing Wild Arms for PS1 and it was a bunk ass Final Fantasy 2 with some pew pew. I guess it was alright. There were Contra, Castlevania and a variety of 3d fighting games that were more important for the time. Remember Intelligent Qube? Much better game. Suikoden? SUI KO DEN. The only problem with Suikoden in that generation is that there wasn't M O R E SUIKODEN.
