These guys have convinced me that my old view that there is “white” music and “black” music was wrong: there’s only music that means something to you or doesn’t. How great is it that these guys love this song - it blows away my stereotypes. Thank God.

Music is universal in bringing people together. I have been to concerts outside of the United States where there were different races and different languages, and for those moments when we are all vibing to the music, nothing else matters but the music.

My mother sat me down when I was 12 years old, and told me that this song contains everything that you need to know to me a real man. I had heard it all my life, but it was the first time that I had really taken the time to really listen. I am now 47 years old, and my mom is at this moment lying in hospice. Having her make me sit and listen to this song in the context it was meant, is probably the most important thing she ever did in raising me. The more people are exposed to songs and messages that are this important it would be a better planet to live on.
I love you so much, mom! Rest easy knowing you have raised a Simple Man. Thank you for making me the man I am today.

Shortly after the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother and guitarist Gary Rossington's mother died, they got together in Van Zant's apartment and started telling stories about them. Rossington came up with a chord progression, and Van Zant wrote the lyrics based on advice the women had given them over the years. They wrote it in about an hour.

I remember waking up to go to school that day in 1977 and the local morning TV news had the story of the plane crash the night before that killed Ronnie, Steve and Cassie and seriously injured most of the band . Being in Florida it was all anybody was talking about in school and we were all shellshocked , to Florida kids at that time Skynyrd were gods. The original lineup only made 4 albums but damn what a great 4 albums. Sadly most of the members that survived the crash have passed on too now. Great reaction guys, glad you appreciate the genius of a band that didn’t always get the credit they deserved!
    Peace

      @nostrathomas2437 Před 5 lety +1

Nathan Brown yeah my bad , wasn’t counting the double live album but yeah I guess I was subconsciously giving them a mulligan for “Gimme Back my Bullets “ that was their artistic expression album that bands always seem to make once they get established. Ronnie and Gary said in an interview after the album didn’t do well, that they made the album with the band having complete control in the studio and they got too cute for their own good and on Street Survivors they got back to being Lynyrd Skynyrd. So yeah 5 but 4 fantastic albums and 1 good album ...haha..plus I was around back then so I can blame it on me getting a little senile 🙃

I saw their Last concert, October 19th, 1977, at Greenville Memorial in SC.
The last song Ronnie sang, on "Encore'" was "Free Bird". The next night at work, I heard the tragic news of the Plane crash in Gilsburg, MS.
It was Very 😢 Sad and Shocking. Just the night before, I had stood down front and watched my favorite band. I had stood in front of Steve Gaines, guitarist, close enough to make eye contact on Wednesday night. Suddenly Thursday October 20th, history changed. RIP ! 😢
I retained my ticket stub to this day. Thank you guys for the review! Skynyrd was an awesome band and Ronnie was genius as a band leader and lyricist.
Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, & Ronnie Van Zant were killed in the crash, as well as the pilot and Co-pilot. Also killed was assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick.
The plane had lost fuel and went down. Thank God for their music and recordings. They live on.

I saw them years and years ago, and it was definitely the best concert EVER!! Freebird was, without a doubt, their most famous song. Freebird is Skynyrd! It was our class song, and the imprint on our year book. Do yourself a favor and listen to Freebird.!You won’t be disappointed!! And of course I can't help but think about long lost elders who helped raise me and wishing they were there again to say everything is going to be ok with a smile, as they not only protected me but shaped who I am. This generational message transcends color or creed.

The Skynyrd band was on the verge of becoming a world wide known band when they had their fatal crash in 77' Give their LP Street Survivors a listen; it came out a mere three days before the crash, and as deceased singer Ronnie Van Zant said, "our best yet." Matter of fact, every LP up to that one is great too. These guys were incredible musicians and could play their asses off. Tragic story as all but one original member has passed, but they're one of the finest rock bands ever. Ronnie was the heartbeat of the band and an incredible lyricist who wrote for the common man. I know You guys love Chris Stapleton, well, he loved Skynyrd and was influenced by them as was Jason Isbell. You'd be wise to listen to every LP up to this one. After that it all changed.

They were the Jimi Hendrix of Southern Rock in that they accomplished so much in such a short time. They have about 20 hit songs I can think of off hand and they all came out within such a short period. RIP to Ronnie and everyone else who died in that place crash.

Just saw their farewell performance in Jacksonville. The music still rings true even without the originals being around. Gary Rossington can still play, that's for sure. Johnny is no Ronnie as far as front men go, but the band still jammed especially Rickey Medlocke. Street Survivors was their best album top to bottom, but I've always held Simple Man up as their best single.

What sounds good, what touches the soul, the heart, you can't help but smile and rock your body and give props to the tones the structure the riffs and the message. Not all music is for all people. The music ALONE can make you FEEL. The words will fit your agendas or beliefs. I’ll never forget a couple years ago I was living in Virginia still with my parents and my sister and I ended up getting a life changing offer for work in Colorado (mind you I had never been further west than Tennessee). I packed what little I owned into my honda civic and set off on a 2 day drive across the country, most of which I’d never seen before. I was in Indiana on day one, it was the early evening, sun was setting and there were no other cars on the road and nothing but open fields in all directions. This song came on and I’m not sure what came over me but within the first 20 seconds or so I started bawling my eyes out and didn’t stop until well after the song was over. The reality, and gravity of the sudden life change just hit me all at once in that moment - and the meaning of this song became clear to me: no matter what happens stay true to the values you were raised on and don’t ever forget where you came from; how my mother and father raised me and how I would need to live my life going forward. It was the most surreal moment of my young life, and now every time I hear it chills just run through me from start to finish.

Dude! Free Bird has a much larger legacy than it was in Forest Gump. There was a distinct period of time that at ANY and EVERY concert by any artist you would hear one person shout, "PLAY FREE BIRD!" It became funny after a while and expected, too. I guess it was a Forest Gump (if it really was) because it was a part of the psyche of the young in America at one time. Weird for me to say that. The band wasn't particularly a favorite of mine, although I grew up in the same place, even went to the same High School many of the band did although 8 or 10 years later. Free Bird had a life of its own, ironically!

SOOO glad my buddy turned me onto your channel!!!
I've ben watching your stuff, now, for 3 hours. Beautiful trips down memory lane.
And seeing your genuine appreciation makes me sort of vicariously 'rehear' the songs with you.

I'm a 43 year old Harley riding gun toting whiskey drinking old school BBoy who absolutely loves Skynyrd. My friends my bboy crew are always looking at me like I'm crazy but this song at 90mph and blasting loud on 2 wheels is a therapy session in itself

The story goes that Al Kooper, the producer, said that he couldn't believe that they wanted to add this song to the album. Ronnie Van Zant, the singer, supposedly escorted Kooper out of the studio and the band recorded and mixed the song.

The ballad of Curtis Lo .its one of my favorites. These guys are at the root of southern rock, where country, blues, and rock come together.

My favorite line is “be something YOU love and understand”. These lyric I heard long ago and have been with me for decades. I’m still working at it at 52 but it speaks to me of hope in myself every time if I can just get it right.

Whipping Post by The Allman Brothers is another one that really cuts deep into the heart of anyone who has been cheated on by the one they loved. It’s rhythm and blues meets blue grass.

Jacob Fulton another great song. But it’s the exact opposite of whipping post. It’s about escaping before you get caught with the guy’s wife vs your wife cheating on you haha

What is bluegrass about Whipping Post?

    • @jaymeyer2304

Rup Tratin It was just a convenient and short way to combine southern rock and blues in a description. I know there’s no banjo player so it’s technically not bluegrass.

My absolute favorite Skynard song. My second favorite is "The ballad of Curtis Lowe" Which explains why the Van zandts were such amazing musicians, being surrounded by Southern street musicians when they were young.
