As always very helpful video. I got my Java moss by accident, half inch of the moss was stuck in the plants I ordered and now it grown so much.
That’s the great thing about moss, it can’t help but grow 😎
Everybody makes it sound so easy but every time I try growing java moss it never takes off, just turns brown. Even with good light.
😕
I am the same. Cannot grow it. Some frogs seem to be killing it right now but this video has inspired me to try harder. The shop owner I bought it from laughed when I told him. He says you cannot kill it. I can. I have hard water maybe that is the problem? I have tried tropical water, cold water - same result. Will try rain water next.😢
@@thesolaraquarium You can kill it, trust me. ;-)
hair algae the problem
@@ar-jaysacay7993 Usually nutrient-rich water causes string algae to thrive. Lower your plant and/ or animal feeding.
I've had experience with fake Java moss from Amazon. 2nd time I went to a local fish site and got Java moss along with pelia moss. It grew nice and green, I'm currently keeping it with goldfish and Guppies and they're loving it.
😊 thank you 🙏 for your help and advice Java moss until this video I didn’t know a bout it cheers 😊

Thankyou heaps, quick simple and definitely helped 👍
No problem 👍
wonderful info sir , now im going to have to get some java moss, I'm not sure of the type of moss we get here but it does great in our tanks, and we can and do harvest it and love it and soon will be selling it on our online store (after I find out what type it is) thank you for the inspiration, sir.
Thank you that was super helpful 🙌 appreciate it.

Very helpful! 😊 I'm currently making the switch in my 55 Gallon community tank from all fake plants to all live plants 🥰 I will definitely be buying some Java Moss!
👍🏻
Hello Richard. This is my first time here.
Thanks for doing this video. I have always loved Mosses and added Mosses to my planters. Now that I am starting to get my 55G ready for aquascaping... I am looking for different mosses.
One of my favorites is the Christmas Moss.
Hey, welcome aboard! Glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙏🏻

Welcome to the channel 🫶🏻
Java moss is cool. I have some wrapped around some wood. I keep it trimmed and it looks amazing.
Agreed 👍🏻
Your videos are the best brother, honestly.
🫶🏻
I bought java moss yesterday and attached it to some mesh, an ornament and a sticky out part on my driftwood.. My shrimp are already loving it, along with their moss balls and limnophila sessiliflora
😻
Easy way to remove hair algae from Java Moss: Get a bottle brush and simply twirl the hair algae around it, like making cotton candy. The brush will easily pull all of the hair algae out. It will take some of the moss with it, but that is no big deal - in fact, you could call it a "twofer" - remove algae and trim moss at the same time. After a few times doing this, the hair algae will not come back as strong and, eventually, you may be able to almost eradicate it altogether.
Great tip. Thanks for sharing. 💪🏻
That's a great tip!

very good informative video...thanks a ton...i see guppies in the shrimp tank don't they hurt shrimps, most of the time it happens in my tank.
Great video, I'd like to see a video on where you sell fish and shrimp, and even your java moss, whether that be online or in person in local fish stores, how do you approach local fish stores with stock to sell and how do you package fish for selling online. Love your enthusiasm.
Hi Steve, check out this video - czcams.com/video/2yBEmZI4znw/video.html
My water is quite hard from the tap. When I use/supplement with RO water, it grows much better and way faster.
Java moss is amazing and so easy to grow
🤜🏻
The only tanks I can't keep java moss in successfully are my marbled crayfish tanks. They eat it like it's candy!
Also every time I go to the pet store and I see a cup of Java moss for sale that is 3/4 dead I convince them to sell it to me for almost nothing because the employees at the chain stores don't realize that the moss is converting from emersed growth to immersed growth in the cup. So they sell it to me for super cheap every time because they think I'm an idiot and they're making money and I bring it home and it bursts to life in my aquarium once it's in proper conditions. That's a protip for anyone going to a chain store with untrained employees😂😂😂

Hey man I love your video's, really informative and to the point.
I was wondering if there was any way I could send you a picture of my 8L shrimp tank just to get your opinion (I'm the only person in my area that has a dedicated shrimp tank And I've only been doing it for about 2 months) So I would love to get your opinion and advice if you have any.
Hope you have a lovely day and that your channel grows as it deserves to!!!
Thank you for your kind feedback.

Hi Richard. Do you breed live river shrimp (live in salty water). I last both fed live river shrimp and live bloodoworms to my axolotls, which were bought online. Shortly after some tiny white wriggly worms manifested (Detritus worms). I don't believe they manifested in my tank because of over-feeding or high ammonia/nitrite levels. I carry out regular water changes.
I put it in reptile terarium water bowls, it presurves the water and allows crickets to climb out instead of drowning and fowling the water.
I got a Java moss mat online. It hasn't grown much but it's pretty steady. Something in the tank got the mat out of the gravel so it's kind of lifted up but my shrimp, especially recently moltes ones, love hiding under it. I don't have the heart to submerge it again 🤣
😂
I’m going to try the Java moss in my tank ( I’m a newbie) so think I’ll start off with Guppies 👍
Java Moss and Guppies are a winning combination 🫶🏻
I bought a small piece of wood with java on and it filled the tank in couple months was only a 40 litre tank but still grew very quick
Java moss would take over the planet if we let it 😱
I have Christmas moss it grows better in my tanks😊
im here because of your new post 😊
Welcome 🫶🏻
Subbed!! What size totes do you use for shrimp breeding?
Welcome! 25 litres or about 7 gallons 👍🏻
Wish you sold to the U.S.! Excellent video!
Thank you 🫶🏻
I was keeping a large clump of Java Moss in one of those net material fry holding boxes at the surface near the light. It developed a horrible amount of hair algae. I dropped the entire mess in a tank with about 10 Amano shrimp & they absolutely decimated the hair algae in a week or so
Amano Shrimp are awesome 👍🏻
Java Moss!! Well I must be one of the few who can’t seem to grow moss!! I have tried a couple types and they just seem to go brown and die 😳😳 Not sure I have actually tried Java moss. - but you are doing a good job of convincing me I should try!! Thanks for another informative video. K
I can not recommend Java Moss enough. In my experience, it is the most versatile plant in the hobby. Definately give it a try 👍
@@FishKeepingAnswers 👍
Try Christmas Moss. I take a wood skewer and dust off any particles that drift onto the Christmas Moss.
I saw a neat mound of Moss mounted on a tall Rock that reached up out of the water column. It was only a little brown up at the very top that was sticking up out of the water....the rest was a healthy green. The pet store associate said that it was Java Moss.
This mean that what was told to me when I bought some must have been Sphagnum Moss.
Java moss is tricky unlike some people say. Try subwassertang, does the same and I find it more beautifull.
@@bigbotno1 Subwassertang is beautiful and shrimp LOVE it. It took a while for mine to get going but once it did it has grown very well.
hello from the USA. I am new to aquascaping I am addicted to this new hobby, I have made a lot of mistakes and am learning, but my question to you is about java moss can it be grown without any fish or shrimp in the tank? I found that your video seems to be one of the most honest information out there .. so thank you
Thank you for your kind feedback. Can it be grown without any fish or shrimp? Probably, but it will need nutrients from somewhere (other than fish poop and uneaten food breaking down in the water)
For those commenting on being unable to grow Java moss, can I suggest trying Pelia moss instead? One of my tanks really struggles to grow Java but my pelia in that tank is extreme but it does seem to do far better being no deeper than 12inches from the light source. I do prefer to have more than one moss variety and find the slightly differing conditions in each on my tanks seems to work better with one over the other.
Good video btw👍🏼
Great shout. Thanks for sharing 🫶🏻
I love your videos - and I hoped that this video would solve my problem with growing Java Moss.
Unfortunately there was no key light bulb moment - only great information well delivered in a relaxing manner.
Guess I'm doomed to browning Java Moss as a sacrifice for all my other beautiful thriving plants.
Thank you for you kind feedback. Sorry to hear Java Moss is not growing well for you. 😕
Java moss is tricky unlike some people say. Try subwassertang, does the same and I find it more beautifull.
Is Java moss good for a 10g? My 10g community planted tank shrimp need more natural hiding places for fry will it overgrow?
I'm starting up some java moss for a neocaradina shrimp and guppy tank so this is a great video. So you say unless you have a fish that will eat the hair algae it's a pain in the java moss, will the shrimp take care of the algae or no?
Neocaridina shrimp will pick at hair algae, and will eat the starts of it, but they wouldn’t tackle an infestation. Amano shrimp are better algae eaters, but you need an army of them to make any real difference 🫤
I have noticed it does better closer to the light source.
True 👍🏻
Thanks a lot. I put my Java Moss in the goldfish tank and they ate most of it.
🤦🏻♂️
😄@@FishKeepingAnswers
Maybe get the goldfish to watch the video 🤔
hi very old comment but would appreciate the reply, i have problem with black hair algae forming on my leafy plants, ive tried blackouts and c02 i am scared to use chemical, any tips
You could try adding half a dozen Amano shrimp.
Sir you just convinced me to buy java moss for my goldfish. Hopefully it can grow in the dead clam shell.
Do it 👍🏻
@@FishKeepingAnswers Okay. So my lava rock with java moss arrived today. But the lava rock is a hard one, not porous. Can it still hold beneficial bacteria sir?
i totally agree with richard! java moss is amazing for breeding neos. i have a tank that has like 1/4 of its entire volume with guppy grass and believe it or not mh shrimps dont seem to work well with them. im not sure why to be completely honest, using the same water and same room and no heater and the java moss tanks always produced for me, and this trial guppy grass tank simply doesnt work 🤷🏻♂️
Ive tried three times to grow this moss but it never works. I attach it to branches in my soil topped with sand and rain water only tank. 22c temp and natural light (not direct sunlight) nothing worked. Help!
what ligth did you use ?
There are two species known in aquatic trade as a java moss, wich one would you recommend?
Taxiphyllum barbieri
Great video! Only half way through so far, but one question. How would you go about attaching the moss to something like a stone or piece of wood or simply stop it from floating
Nevermind! I found the answer in the video!
🤣😂🤣😅🤣
Random question, but if possible I'd like a small bit of advice. I asked my online seller about the shrimp and they said they would be unable to sex them, how should I go about getting them since the tank I have is too small for them to breed
@@thedarkninja_ How small are we talking? 20L is a great starting tank size for shrimp and can house a few hundred if done right.
@@garthantash half of that, 10l
hi , can moss grow without co2. injection in low tech tank with only decent lighting ?
Hi. In my experience, Java moss grows without co2, without adding fertiliser and with only basic lighting. Treat it too well, and it just gets covered in algae. Hope that helps 👍🏻
I'd be interested in buying some Java moss and I'm in the UK. What the link to your ebay?
Hi. We wound down our shrimp selling business in favour of making more CZcams videos 😎
I had some java moss come into my tank on a snail and it grew like crazy with only a small LED light in my betta aquarium. Very easy to grow for sure!
That is awesome!
I put java moss in my tank, but tried planting it. It kept floating, so I stuck a weighted plastic plant on top of it. It is now part of the plastic plant, but growing sprouts up thru the gravel.
This tank is soon becoming a planted tank, with one plastic plant
Java moss is one toughest aquatic plant, I surprised how they can grow in my house wall and how abundant they are in my place as long they moist enough.
I have found the same thing 👍🏻
I have 7 tanks and java moss has never successfully grown in any of the tanks, and it has the perfect parameters of both light, fish poop/malm. I wish it was as easy as said.
It always strikes me as funny that one person struggles when another succeeds, yet pick a different plant, shrimp or fish and the tables can easily be turned. I suppose the hobby would be dull if we were all great at every aspect of it. Thanks for taking the time to comment. 👍🏻
@@FishKeepingAnswers Potentially. It's more the case of actually having parameters that would not be in the extremes and yet something so simple like Java moss still fails. Agreed there are parallels and solar opposites in this hobby, which keeps it fresh I suppose. Maybe a sprg of your java moss tried here may succeed lol
Java moss is tricky unlike some people say. Try subwassertang, does the same and I find it more beautifull.
Eles vão comer as algas
Hi richard. Have you tried taiwan moss?
Hi. I haven’t. So far I’ve just had Java Moss
i had java moss and the only time i couldn't grow it was cuz of the carbon filtration I had in my tiger barb tank. so probably avoid using carbon filtration with plants or provide enough nutrients for it to grow.
Hey, not heard that before. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
I need healthy Java moss 💚
How do you feed guppy babies in java moss because if they come out of the moss will they not be eaten by the adults?
Any ideas how to get rid of thick hair algae coveru all my moss
Honestly, I would rip out all the moss with the algae in and let the remaining, algae free moss grow 👍🏻
I tied my java moss to a cholla wood piece, do you suggest this or should i take it off? it would float if I hadn't tied it down
If it looks good, just leave it tied in. It should grow well 🤞🏻
@@FishKeepingAnswers Thank you so much :) its still tied there and there has been some growth, thank you
Do you recommend it growing Java moss with my red eared slider?
It’s worth a try, although he might just eat it. I would give a small clump a try and see how it goes 🤞🏻
IS there any way to get hair algae out of java moss? I have a clump that is starting to get "hairy" :( and I don't think the shrimp like eating that stuff. UGH.
Personally, I just cut out the sections with hair algae in and dispose of them 😞
Hi is it ok if i grow my java moss in the substrate or does it need to be attached to any decor
Java Moss is happy tied to rocks/wood or just left in a clump sitting in the substrate. It won’t care either way 👍🏻
Thanks!
Even after 30+ years of keeping I'm now having a helluva time keeping moss alive. I know the water here after we moved is crap to begin with plus the landowner over chorinates his well daily and before I go full blown RO for neos think I'll go with an aireted decholination barrel and give the water a couple days to gas off before water changes. I have moderate lighting, use ferts plus dechorinator and most of my plants in general just melt away to nothing. Any advanced knowledge would be appreciated.
Are you dosing micronutrients?
How hard is your water?
Cool vid but I'm halfway thru and you haven't taught me anything about what to do with it when I get my tiny cup in the mail and how to take it from 40z cup to flourishing aquarium cup
Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment. Hope you found the answer by the end of the video 🤞🏻

Hi. Unfortunately we stopped selling in favour of making CZcams videos. 👍🏻
@@FishKeepingAnswers great to see a uk channel, brilliant
Im about to set up my planted aquarium, but I am afraid of using Java moss. They are beautiful, but I had a bad experience in the past, it got full of a green hairlike algae. I had to clean the moss every day basically.
It happens ☹️
I'm trying to grow plants and moss but the only problem is I got to many ornaments no space

Hi. I haven’t shared my eBay shop details on here I’m afraid. At the moment we don’t have any moss or shrimp listed. We will probably relist in late March. If we do I’ll give you a shout. 👍🏻
👍
i bought a java moss from online and it its leaves were dark green and its been 3 weeks and my java moss is in brown colour should i throw it away or wait?
Definitely wait. Give it at least 3 MONTHS before you consider throwing it away 👍🏻
how do I propagate java moss for terrariums? should i leave it in water? if yes then how often should i change the water? if not water then how do i propagate it in a soil substrate?
Hi. I have never kept it out of water, but I suspect it will need to be kept moist/damp. I definitely would not put it in the soil. It is more likely to grow attached to rocks or wood in the terrarium.
I have terrible luck with moss, green hair algae just takes over. I had no problem with green hair algae, it was all gone then some moss I had left in the tank started to come back a little - now its turning into a clump of algae and spreading it around the tank.
Algae can be a real pain. I would say don’t give up, just keep removing it where you see it and consider reducing the number of hours your lights are on for each day. 6 to 8 hours is usually sufficient for plants. Anything over that can definitely benefit the algae.
Does it have to be Java moss or can it be any moss? What about Taiwan moss, weeping moss, or Christmas moss?
So, different mosses may have different requirements. I only grow Java Moss as I am not much of an aquascaper. As such, I’m not the best person to answer. Sorry 😞
I grow all of these, and tbh, I don't really see any difference between the rate of growth compared to Java moss. Of course their appearance, and direction of growth is different, but as far as the ease of growth and the speed, seems to be very similar. If I had to choose any of those or Java moss, I would definitely go with any or all of those, as I like the way the grow and look a bit more than Java. But really, I love them all and enjoy the look having all the different mosses together in a tank. I will say, although I've had my run ins with hair algae with all of them here and there. Christmas moss, and weeping moss seem to get it the most of all my mosses. So, to answer your question, finally, lol. It doesn't have to be Java moss, and you can just choose the more readily available to you or which ever you prefer the look of. You will find many differing opinions on mosses, so it will help to research several opinions, and read any info on each moss, then go from there to help you decide what you think will best suit your needs and wants. Regardless, you will never go wrong with the addition of any mosses to your tanks. Mosses have to be my favorite thing to grow.
@@cattfishing*IS* there any hope to get hair algae out of my moss?
hair agly can be removed with easy with waterperoxide? or am i wrong?
It can. It usually turns red and dies within a few hours of being sprayed. Weirdly, many fish will eat it once it starts to die off 🤷🏻♂️
Oooh, I'll have to try that. Do you pull the affected moss out of the tank to treat it?
Or is hydrogenperoxid safe to use in a tank (with shrimp)?
Hi have a question will Brown java moss turn green again
Hi. So it depends why it is brown. Have you just got it or has it been green for many months then turned brown?
Just got it
Watch todays video on why Java Moss turns brown. Hopefully it will answer the question for you 🤞🏻
I was gifted some "dead" java moss poles...those bendable things that are hung up in plastic bags on the shelf at the pet store. The gent was going to throw them away, so I said, I'd love to give them a try. Well, it has been 5 months since, but they all HAVE started sprouting again, slowly but surely!
h202 works wonders for killing hair moss.
I can’t see your eBay shop referenced on your CZcams videos.
Hi. I haven’t shared that information on CZcams. 👍🏻
I have light and java moss. Everything grows like weeds. The Java moss dies and i can't figure it out
In my experience, most common reason is because the moss was grown out of water at the farm, then sold to stores, and on to customers before it has a chance to transition to life under water.
1:30 Did I misunderstand you saying adult shrimp eat baby shrimp? Or were you talking about fish eating them
I just double checked, I was talking about adult fish eating their babies 👍🏻
My java moss keeps dying. I don't know if it's the snails killing it, maybe?
Sorry to hear the moss isn’t doing well. However, I can guarantee it’s not the snails killing it 👍🏻
how to control hair algae
I just pull/cut it out when I see it 😐
