This is legitimately one of the best scenes Tarentino has ever shot. The shifts in tempo and tone are so sudden yet seamless. Jarring but subtle. From when Beatrix ducks under them when they’re arguing, to her attempting to hide the fact that she speaks Japanese fluently... but there’s so much more. Hattori throwing the knife back on the shelf, keying you into his talents. It’s all top notch story telling. The sake bottle breaking in the back when she says that she’s looking for Hatori Hanzo (which tells you that his assistant is really paying attention and genuinely thought she was suspicious). This whole scene tells you SO much without any real exposition. You could write nearly a whole movie about Hatori from this one scene alone. Just a master class. And combined with the next scene... I mean wow. On the whole both Kill Bills, but especially volume 1, are more fun than great. But this 10 minute stretch should go on Q’s career highlight reel.

Also the fact he's known as the best Samurai sword maker that Elle was willing to pay $2 million for it and Bill was one of his students I'd make a guess he's also an expert swordsman himself. I've always wondered what Bill did to piss Hanzo off that he held such a strong grudge and break his blood oath. I wish that had been revealed

Tarantino really went all out for this film. Yes, Sonny Chiba reprises his role as Hattori Hanzo (albeit a descendant of the character from the "New Shadow Warriors" series) but the man playing his employee is Kenji Ohba, one of Japan's biggest tokusatsu 'suit' actors. Basically the guy who does the stunts in superhero suits for tokusatsu shows. Everyone got a cameo in this film.
That's one thing I notice about the best films is that, typically, the smallest parts are as memorable as the biggest ones. All the characters feel lived in and like the writer, director, and actors put in a ton of work to make the character feel layered.
That “Do you understand??” At around the 1:30 Mark always makes me laugh hard. My buddies & I constantly quoted lines from this movie in high school, & that was probably our favorite.
