    I'm glad the 8th Doctor got his moment in modern Doctor Who. Even as a short runup to the 50th anniversary, McGann killed it with his performance. I only wish it was included as part of the whole 50th anniversary episode, and not just a lead in to it.

      Imagine if he was the fourth doctor in the 50th so we had one to represent the Doctor before the war (or before fighting in it). Same with the power of the Doctor. Absolutely loved his minor role but he also could have been given a bigger one with the 60th on the horizon.

      I was already completely sold on the new series by the time Eccleston was done...but that moment really nailed it. The moment the writers showed their hand, that the Doctor was seeking...not forgiveness, not redemption, but just a reason to remember everything good he could be. And he'd found it. He'd found a reason to be proud of himself again, believe in himself again.

      I tried to link Jody’s Doctor. That “forced regeneration” thing with the, IMO, zero talent or charisma Master sealed the deal for me. The Master has to have something that draws the audience besides pure vile and hatred; and he has to be able to act. Well. That is just me. I did watch some more but that is pretty much when they lost me. Thrilled for some David Tennant infusion with Catherine Tate upcoming.

    The Modern Regeneration style may be known as the gold glow along with the high pitched sound effect, but there has been at least some variation between each version if you look close enough. For example the Eighth Doctor's regeneration looks quite simplistic compared to his future ones, the Ninth Doctor's looked like a yellow version of the time vortex, the Tenth Doctor's regeneration was like watching a volcano erupt, the Twelfth Doctor's slow motion regeneration effect appeared more as wavy lines like watching a lightning bolt, and the regenerations in the Chibnall era looking more like an orange river with how the particles flowed.
    The only downside to the Eleventh Doctor's regeneration effects were that the camera was very shakey that it was difficult to see it clearly, but also the actual change was a small light up around the Doctor's neck and the change happened off screen.

      I know what you mean, it makes to sense to have a default setting as it were but there's something charming about each iteration of production having to come up with something new and creative for each regeneration. Something that someone pointed out to me the other day is that in Classic Who each Doctor 'died' before regenerating, whereas in NuWho they are 'dying' and then regenerate before the point of death. I feel silly for not noticing it before but now cannot unsee it! I don't mind the golden energy but wish they'd at least try something different than the T pose at least once in a while (11 to 12's sneeze regeneration not withstanding) 😁😁

      Ok, hear me out. Hartnell's regen was in black and white, so it could've been orange even if it looked white. Same case with Troughton's. Pertwee's was just a fade, but that may have been bc What's-His-Name "gave it a little push." Baker's was cocooned in The Watcher, so the orange explosion was concealed. Davidson's was concealed by the purple hallucination-y stuff, but you could see orange bleeding through. Baker's used to be blue, but was changed to orange later on. McCoy's had a little bit of orange energy, but we know his regeneration was affected by the anesthetic of the surgery. So, yeah. The regen effects have always been consistent.

    I love Nine and Ten’s because they’re the absolute peaks of opposing ends of the emotional spectrum.
    Nine was cold and alone, bitter, vengeful, regretful and hesitant but by chance meets Rose, just an ordinary bored human inspired by the universe to try and be more, to be better, like he was in his beginnings, and she heals his tattered psychosis. Before Nine the Doctor didn’t really know or care for love.
    He allowed kinship and socialisation but was still starkly alien. In allowing love’s help, he is able to die dignified and renewed, optimistic and most of all unafraid, as he knows the process will be more traumatising for his friend. So he reassures her in the little time he has left.
    Ten meanwhile accrues the most friends of any Doctors and further allows the excitement and fun love provides, but by the end of his life absolutely nothing remains. One after the other, everything is taken from him swiftly and cruelly.
    Rose, Jackie and the redeemed Mickey the Idiot are separated from him eternally beyond unbreakable boundaries. Martha is unsatisfied by unrequited love and seeks it elsewhere. Astrid sacrifices herself for the greater good along with many others on the Titanic. Donna saved the universe but cannot know, nor ever remember her best friend or the wonderful things they saw and did. Adelaide defies his shattered morals and kills healed to maintain rightful order. Wilfred would rather the Doctor allowed him to give his life to save him, thinking himself expendable.
    In the end, he takes one final look at them all shining without him and ponders if he could ever face loss again, coming to terms with a solemn loneliness unlike any other. He didn’t want to move on, he wanted to right every unjust wrong he faced and become the best of himself, but there was no time left. It could not be helped. He faced his end afraid, totally alone, with the weight of guilt and sadness sharpening the pain into a dagger straight through his hearts.

      I used to be of the same opinion but, after ‘The Night of the Doctor’, my head-cannon is that this regeneration energy is a byproduct of what was given to The Doctor by the Sisterhood of Karn - like a side effect - evidenced by McGann’s Doctor being the first of the ‘Modern Regenerations’. Thus it’s always brutal and painful and perhaps why all the (modern) Doctors are so reluctant to change.

    Does anyone else think that the destructiveness of a regeneration has to do with how long that iteration lived? Nine had only been around for like a year or 2 after he regenerates from War. 10 was active for much longer, and 11 spent over a thousand years on Trensalor before regeneration, and he blew up the daleks with his.

    • @divinekitty1831
      @divinekitty1831 Před 8 měsíci

      10 only lived for 6 years though, and he absolutely exploded. Then again, he also held on to the regeneration for as long as he possibly could, and so did 12. 11 was stuck dying of old age, long after where he would have regenerated naturally, so maybe that's what it is. Holding back the regeneration makes it more destructive. 13 didn't try to hold it back, instead accepting it, same as 9. Neither of them made any where near as much of a mess.

    • @zarrg5611
      @zarrg5611 Před 4 měsíci

      My theory is that in regeneration every cell in the body must be destroyed all at once and in an instant in time, but there is a small build up of time sensitive cells that slip through the process that eventually result in the process fatally failing the 13th time, the new set of regenerations destroys these cells, and a huge amount of energy is needed, also that energy is usually contained in some way, 11 was releasing the full brunt of it against the daleks.

    • @benjammin5328
      @benjammin5328 Před 4 měsíci

      @zarrg5611 This theory is disproven by the Timeless Child. The whole 13 regeneration was a myth made up by the Time Lords. Most likely the reason why 11 wasn't regenerating was because he thought the myth was true, and was subconsciously rejecting his regeneration. And we know that regeneration is voluntary because the Master stopped himself from regenerating so he could die in the 10's arms as a "f**k you" to him.

    honestly, the 13th Doctor's final words make more sense when you realize that Chibnall and the BBC were literally not even sure if the show was going to continue past that point. no new actor or writer lined up, the 80s all over again. for all the writing woes of his era, i'm very thankful Chris managed to convince Davies to come back. i would've taken another era headed by Chibnall than have no more Doctor Who.

      Another Chibnall era would've sealed its end, at the rate that it was going. On another note, Chris didn't convince David or anything like that - the BBC literally chose RTD as his successor rather than letting Chibnall choose his own because he lost that much faith in being able to manage the future of the show.

    Even though it would be very risky (in part because of how much Doctor Who has fallen into tropes), I wish one regeneration would be a case of the Series 4 one but instead goes straight into the next incarnation, maybe by having the series beforehand building up to the idea that the Doctor would regenerate in the finale for the sake of getting a full goodbye like the other incarnations but then go into the next series as themselves only to have an important episode part way through where they need to regenerate and then just continue the adventure as the next incarnation.
