- Will Trialling Wreck our Modified New car? Lands End Trial Finale // Part 3. In this full length episode Jonny Smith and Sion Ellis from Auto Max www.automax-wales.com/ take their new Kia 'Cant' Picanto 1.0 turbo GT Line on the 100th Landsend Trial. This may be the most cost effective motorsport left, but it's definitely not the mildest.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
The trial was designed over 100 years ago to prove the robustness and reliability of new motorcycles. Then cars started entering. 2024 marked the 100th running event, so Jonny wanted to see if a new car could handle the punishment, but also the fact it requires staying up for over 24-hours...

After careful research into the legalities surrounding 'Fair Use', knowing that we have used the clip(s) in a factual, reportage way to validate the discussion point made by the person(s) involved in the original footage. We have used as short a clips as possible to validate said point. We have also used the clips in the confidence that it will act in a positive transformative way to the original clips; with that in mind, please check out the official Fifth Gear CZcams channel - / fifthgear - and please support them as you are supporting us. Any other channel would've milked this fantastic idea over many more videos... this is why Jonny's the greatest!
best telly in ages
Ahahahah Jonny pinned this comment! Good for you, Jonny
I would’ve happily watched more episodes!
Would it, though? 3 episodes is already enough & all of it could be condensed into one episode like how Westen Champlin does it
1 episode per stage half hour each, edited to oblivion for additional padding 😂
Jonny is such a relatable and likable human.
To all the Marshalls and all the Volunteers can I say a BIG THANK YOU on behalf of all those taking part as an Armchair Spectator.
Kia, Jonny, Sion, Phil & Damo (getting wet and cold for Jonny) and all his helpers Cheers!
100%. It’s the 24 hour volunteers who make events like this possible.
This might be one of the best automotive videos to ever be put out on CZcams. Hats off to everyone involved in the production on this.
Many thanks. We really appreciate the feedback.
You get A for effort Mate. The Kia gets an A, your co-pilot gets an A for prep and pushing you the old man!
And the club gets A+ for a fantastic event and the effort and commitment to put this trials on year after year. Cheers all. 🇨🇦
Thank you chap 💪🏽
Sleep deprived Jonny marvelling over hairy moss is hilarious
😳
I used to have one of their car stereos back in the 80s. No, wait....
The look on Sion’s face just added to it 😂
‘Bollock Porridge” was my favourite bit of the video
Also use on Jonny's VW eUP review 4 years ago. Still make s me chuckle though 😁
Really enjoyed this. Thanks to all the camera crew for the footage. The Cant did you proud
Johnny has big balls. He could've failed in one of the early sections and.. flop, no video.
But he took the risk and we now get to enjoy this great experience with him.
As someone who organised events which required a large number of volunteers I’d just like to give a massive shout out to those legendary souls braving all the conditions and difficulties so that this event can happen. Our mantra to the competitors was always “don’t forget to thank the volunteers”. Well done to all involved.
T-Shirt ideas No.2 & 3:
"Get The Weave On!"
"Weave, you Cant!" 😁
This series Definitely convinced me that the mighty cant should be a high contender for my first car
A proper trooper is the Cant.
I never liked Hyundai/KIA, but I've been doing quite a bit of research on their models lately and actually they aren't as bad as I thought.
@@N1ckZaren’t as bad? They are smashing the life out of it the i30N is not to be messed with and even for the EVangelists you have ionic5N now, I like you 5 years ago never would have bought one but now? Definitely will buy an N for a track car at some point when my next catastrophic failure happens
I always have lanyards on cameras just incase their primary fixing fails.
@@AI-Records24 the IONIQ 5 N is one of my favourite EVs. It has the fake simulated gearbox which feels like a real ICE car. If you are in a gear that's too high, the torque is low. It also has a fake rev limiter and fake sound. It's really cool. I am more into Audis and BMWs though.
Great series Jonny. I enjoyed every bit of it. That little Kia is a star.
Jonny, This was amazing . I gotta tell ya . Firstly A BIG UP to Phil .. what a creation he did .. and everyone involved ! That Kia CANT is awesome. Please Kia do not scrap the CANT 💯💯👍👍
If Jonny had A Top Gear type studio the Cant would be up on the ramp on display. Top notch episode!
Jonny and The Late Brake Show at their best, a great mini-series 👍. Chapeau to Sion and the videographers as well.
In an era of motorsport led by Verstappen's predictable dominance, this is the marvelous stuff we need Jonny & Sion ( and Kia Cant, hero hatchback) 👍🙏 All great fun, great viewing, and an amazing guest appearance by Daft Punk as your co-driver at about 30mins in too...
Lovely that British politeness is sprinkled throughout the event at every opportunity too. In one word, hurrah!!
Hats off to Lando winning in Miami then haha
@@user-vk4vd7vr5tYeh, jinxed him! 🤣
Wow what an experience Jonny and Sion! The stamina needed for organising, competing and marshalling such an event is epic.
The sheer dedication of all the volunteers standing on the side of a wet cliff edge is on a par with 🇮🇲 TT marshalls 👏 and shows the dedication like minded people have to keep all forms of motorsport accessible to all.👌
Two great catchphrases - Sion's "don't stop" and Paul Whitehouse's "don't wind"
Hopefully the Cant can go on some sort of museum display, really needs to be in a Picanto ad now
Yes KIA have a change of heart ❤️ please don't crush the KIA Cant try to get a display area in your Head quarters for Kia prosperity that the old face lift picanto was a strong little car that was too good to crush. This comes from one of your loyal customers. ⭐️🌟⭐️🌟⭐️
This is joyous British eccentricity summed up in what has to be one of your best films so far Johnny. Chapeau to the cant as well. Dau ddyn mewn un cant 👌🚙
This series was awesome to watch, thank you!
Jonny, What can I say that has not already been said. How do you continue to make your content better and better each time. The production quality, commitment is second to none and makes me smile knowing you have not been swallowed by the dark side and made to conform to TV standards, that are no where near close to the quality and output you and your team deliver on this channel. Superb and onwards to 750k subscribers.
Fantastic video! Great event, great car, great people. Well don't to all.
Thanks Jonny from the Cradocks. Tim was Chief Marshall for the MCCTrials for many years after at least ten years of competing with Ken Green and Ron& Myrtle in their Beetle Team. Ben and Dan were also involved as Navigators and later as Marshall’s. Everything you have said is true. Well done!
Thankyou Jonny and your entire team, filming in rain and mud and the Motor Club for making this such a great experience for us to watch. ❤
Brilliant - well done to everyone involved!!
I absolutely flippin loved this Jonny! Superb. Absolutely superb. Sion was great throughout this trilogy too.
I had a grin on my face for the whole video - this was absolutely fantastic, and big thanks to Sion for prepping the car and being an excellet co-driver. I did chuckle at 18:14 "extendable wand" because I'm really mature like that - it sounds like something Jonny would call someone who has annoyed him!
What a brilliant video! My favourite from the channel so far. The sort of motorsport absolutely anyone can take part in with just a basic set of tools. Love it.
Trials by (mis)adventure!
Love it.
Great mini series -thanks for bringing this to us Jonny
Amazing video series. Thank you, Jonny. As for my weapon of choice? One narrow RWD rear-engined car which no one likes (so is cheap!) is a mid-2010s Renault Twingo. The tricky bit might be removing modern safety kit/electronics but I wonder how one might do, given similar mods to the Cant.
This is absolutely brilliant Jonny, loved it. Get back there next year with another car! I vote the Smart Roadster!
I think this may have been my favourite episode, loved every minute.
That was bleddy brilliant. Thanks Jonny and Sion and crew. I would do this in my old Peugeot 305 estate if it was still around. Proper farm car it was.
Epic Sunday entertainment!
🤘🏽
Well done to everyone involved! Id be interested in a youtube short where you get the cant up on the ramp to see how well it held up.
That looks like so much fun 🙂
Rally drivers paraphrase Cyndi Lauper. "Guys just want to have fun!"
Excellent result. I bounced in Dellow MYP 916 @ 14:00 for years then we moved to a Troll. They are fantastic trials cars.
Bloody excellent Mr. Smith
Hi Johnny (and Team), another great video series. Just one thing, there's no 'e in Bridgwater 😂
Suzuki X-90! Cometh the rally, cometh the ideal car. In all my years of being a petrolhead, I never saw the point of the X-90 monstrosity. Until now! What a car! Well done with the Cant, I imagine that you were beyond knackered at the end. Well done!
Loved the 3 CANT vids Jonny. The trial looked like so much fun. Well done and it was fascinating seeing the mods Sion did, Will be looking for his channel for sure
We CANT thank you enough for watching. Cheers v much.
Really enjoyed this series. Chapeau!
What an epic tale, wonderfully told. So much of the atmosphere brought to the viewer. Well done and thank you to the whole team involved 👌👏
Those Marshalls are amazing. Great work in keeping this event going. Good work with the Cant.
This has to be one of the single greatest CZcams endeavours I have ever seen. You guys are absolute rockstars and thank you for bringing this to our screens. As for what I would choose, I'd probably go for a Reliant Scimitar SE5: RWD, lightweight with big V6 power. Only issue is there aren't many bad ones left to do it to
Glad I finally found the time to watch this.
Another great video Jonny & co !
I'm about to move to Cornwall and this is going to be on my long list of new things to do and see👍.
Absolutely brilliant Jonny! It was so tense watching the Cant, willing it to get to the top.
No such word as Cant!
Was great to meet you at the start. Glad you had a good event. Our orange beetle got us a Silver award.
Dream car would probably be an Escort for it. Though I am very happy with the beetle.
Excellent effort....!
Two mates just having a laugh...👌
Brilliant series of videos, well done Jonny and team. Go Team Cant!
What a plucky little Cant! Jonny, you and Sion deserve medals - up for 37 hours, fighting through mud, rivers and vertical slopes, and as for the marshalls - total heroes. This episode has been EPIC and thank you for a fabulous series and for promoting such a great sport!
Absolutely brilliant. Great format for the miniseries ending in a bumper episode on the event. I know there must have been a huge amount or effort to produce and edit this, but it was all worthwhile and something I'm sure we all want to see more of.
In about 17 years watching CZcams, this is one, if not the, best pair of films I've ever seen. I never did trials, but am a stage/road rally veteran....and this absolutely captures the excitement of a club motorsport event. Hopefully it'll entice some badly-needed young blood into a sport that gave me so much pleasure over the years. Well done, guys.....and thankyou.
You bloody heros! Well done
Crash. Bang. Wallop, what a video. Honestly one of the best things I've ever watched on CZcams, Jonny has delivered (and keeps delivering) the motoring content we all want that TV dosent give us. Keep it up dude, amazing. I wanna do a trial now. And get a piCANTo too 😄
Thank you so much for taking time to watch it. 👌🏾
Thanks for the best ever Late Brake Show ever! I love watching trials as the variety of cars and bikes makes it so interesting. My ideal trials car would be a Ford Model A roadster with a stonking great Ford V8 under the hood as brute horsepower is sometimes the only way to get up those hills. If you've got the trialling bug you should enter the Exeter trial and face the infamous Simms Hill which makes even the hills of The Lands End Trial pale into insignificance. Thanks again Jonny and I'll see you conquer the mighty Simms!
Bravo. Entertaining throughout, as always. A fantastic achievement
Great video. The only car youtube channel that puts everything on the line in the name of variety. You shun the algorithm, you shun the classic youtuber personality and you follow your sense of taste. It's heartening to see that it's successful.
Something else on my bucket list
As someone grom Cornwall, its great to see you documentaing this
🤘🏽
Thanks Jonny, great video.
Very well done for finishing the trial, it's a great challenge. I was there with an MG Midget.
Happy to subscribe.
Hey guys, this series was great. How much fun was that!!!! Maybe gambler 500 next over here in the states? Good times!!!! Thank you !!!! can't could
Well done,Jonny,Sion, and the Cant! At least you all survived. Nice to see David Richards too!
Well done both fair play !
Great stuff guys, would like to see more of this in the future! I have a Picanto GTLine S, so made it extra special.
Good work lads, great co-driving Sion!
Really enjoyed this mini series. Top work car perv
This looks like great fun.
What a CANT!!! Great work Sion on preparing the care for the gruelling trial and you Jonny on your driving skills.
Great series, please make it an annual video set with a new car each year.
Annual? That's a top idea. Different beast each time?
@@TheLateBrakeShowthe cant deserves a rematch at the least
Eddie’s branch line was a pig, with the hairpin at the start and deep mud. That was my first foot fault (a fail for a bike) of the event. Was gutted at the time. Just need to go back next year and try again. 😂 That’s the beauty of these events. It is achievable, but it all needs to come together for the medal, and when it doesn’t, you just want to come back and have another go.
Agree. We queued for 1.5hrs for this one, and that meant Blue Hills was tackled after dark. Sub optimal. The mud here was horrendous.
@@TheLateBrakeShow The weather was horrendous at the end. Although by that stage I was tucked up in the bar at the hotel with friends enjoying a well deserved beer! 🥳 Superb series. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing it from a different perspective. Eager to get to the Peak District towards end of summer.
Just to confuse people I'd like to track down a factory 4x2 Series 1 Land Rover for a trial. I imagine it would be hopeless as a rear wheel drive car with no weight over the rear.
I've absolutely loved this series and trialing is definitely a motorsport that doesn't get enough attention.
This is television quality series. The best show I’ve seen on CZcams
Really? Wow, praise indeed. Thanks!
Fantastic little series of videos, thanks.
My first "trials" on similar trails in a pumpkin-orange Datsun B-210!.
What a car!
This is great! ❤
Only halfway through but cracking episode Jonny. Thanks for bringing us something different
Great video - well done Jonny and Sion 👏👍 anymore trials planned??
My choice Johnny, 1989 Skoda 136 Rapid Coupé Great cheap cars in their day and great off road.
Love them. Many still compete.
@@TheLateBrakeShow Gearbox is a weakness in the Skud for trialling.....think fitting a type 2 box is the answer
Really enjoyed that. If EVs are allowed, a jacked-up VW e-up would be my choice. Not too heavy, loads of torque and the essential heated seats.
Range..
Sion is a fab copilot. Very encouraging and reassuring
I thoroughly enjoyed this series, Johnny. All your videos are a joy to watch but this was exemplary!
Ah, that AX brings back memories of my first car.
Same here, they are as tough as nails despite appearing to be incredibly flimsy.
I'd trial a Lada Riva (the Fiat 124 derivative). I once was a passenger in one high into the Kazakhstan mountains near Almati and it really was a mountain goat, driving past lots of 4x4s. Sadly I lost the photo evidence of this thing going over massive boulders. The driver's skill was off the chart, but the car was exceptional for something so basic.
Well done Matt and Hannah you both deserve it based on the hard work you’ve put in.
I don’t need one, but this makes me want a Picanto for scooching around town! This is such a fantastic video. The work that’s gone in is obvious and hugely appreciated. The pair of you did amazing work and the edit is on point!
The rules in a way have held back the Cant, a set of knobbly mud tyres and she’d be unstoppable! Still did very well and you should be proud. Great job
True. Tyre choice is absolutely key.
@@TheLateBrakeShow Black round Pirelli.
Same rules for everyone..
Damn thrilling!! Better than watching Dakar!!!
Cornish Dakar?
Thanks for the 54 minute smile! Brilliant effort all round, what an achievement! CMTMB
Thank you for watching!
I have a Picanto GT Line S turbo for my 65 mile a day commute......brilliant cars! Really enjoyed this series, was on the edge of my seat the whole time!
Cheers v much. Why not make it all terrain?
Thankyou Johnny for a superb odyssey. Was with you every step of the way willing the Cant up those brutal inclines while bouncing in my kitchen chair…!Best thing on Utube. Oh and my car of choice would be my first car, a 1971 Chrysler Simca 1100. Why?Apparently it’s new front wheel drive for a small hatchback convinced VW to rethink the rear wheel setup of the mighty Beetle and paved the way for the Polo and Golf. The grandaddy of the Cant?Would love to see it spinning up those Blue remembered hills.
I've never sat on my seat and twitched my legs so much whilst watching the muddy hill climbs. Brilliant stuff Jonny.
Thank you Jonny and Sion this was an absolutely awesome video. It's great to see a race event that the competres don't have to be rich or have a stack of sponsors.
2CV is my trial of choice.
Fantastic Jonny, well done 👏🏻
No such word as cant
Thanks for your great reviews from your event😊
