    In this video I'm pouring a concrete slab using a high range water reducer to make the concrete very flowable.
    This concrete additive is designed to make the concrete feel wetter or looser than it really is. The HRWR makes the concrete flow more easily but it doesn't lower the strength of the concrete or make it more likely to crack.
    When I order my concrete, I ask for either mid-range water reducer or high range. It depends on what I'm pouring and how far I have to pull the concrete. This additive costs a little more per yard but it makes pouring the concrete easier. I don't need as much labor to pour a concrete floor as I would need if I didn't use a hrwr.
    In the video, the slab is 58' x 28' x 6 inches thick. It took 25 yards of concrete and we poured the slab in about 30 minutes.
    The power screed we used in the video is the ScreeDemon from MBW, Inc.
    This screed is very light and makes screeding concrete very easy. My daughter, Tia, screeded this entire slab using the ScreeDemon and did a great job!

    Hello Mike, I am retired and live in the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky. I have just built a 30x60 work shop, with a concrete floor. I have been watching your videos for about 2 months. I decided to tackle the project myself, with 5 of my friends helping me. We got the pour completed in about 2 hours and I'm very pleased with it. I could not, nor would not, have done the job myself if it hadn't been for you and your videos! You gave me the confidence, using your methods, I needed to do it. I saved around 5 thousand dollars by doing it myself. Thank you for sharing your videos, and I'll be enrolled in concrete underground very soon.

    Just an engineering point - The perimeter rebar that you were wet-setting along the edges is most effective, very close to the bottom of the slab pour, where it can help resist tension forces. Rebar or WWF has little to no affect at all in reinforcing concrete when it is placed in the middle, bcz the middle is actually considered to be under neutral forces. Neither tension, at the bottom nor compression at the top.
    This is also why your viewers needn’t get upset when they see you walking on the wire mesh, after you’ve pulled it up once. It’s right where it needs to be.

    • @johncross436
      @johncross436 Před 4 lety +2

      can i get some more responses on this - have always been told "in the middle" and was at the point i was going to ask mike about them stepping on the wire and it being pushed back down.

    • @psidvicious
      @psidvicious Před 4 lety +12

      @@johncross436 This is one of those things where a sketch would be very helpful, but I’ll try to explain anyway.
      Imagine a 12” deep beam with 2 vertical rows of dots, 3” apart, at the center of the beam. Then put a load on top of the beam, at the midspan, directly in between the 2 vertical rows. As the beam begins to deflect, you would observe that the dots at the top of the beam get closer together (compression), the dots at the bottom of the beam move further apart (tension), while the dots in the middle of the beam remain constant (neutral). A slab behaves in exactly the same way.
      When you form a typical, structural concrete slab, the top and bottom steel is always called out to be ¾” from the top and ¾” from the bottom. The engineer wants the steel as close to the edges as it can be and still get concrete coverage bcz that is where the steel is most affective at resisting the compression and tension forces. Almost never will there be any steel called for in the middle, bcz the middle is halfway in between the top and bottom (obviously) and right in the ‘sweet spot’ where the 2 forces cancel each other out.
      As far as Mike and the crew stepping on the wire, once they pull the wire up with the hook, aggregate gets under the wire and doesn’t allow the wire to get all the way back down to the bottom.

    • @MikeDayConcrete
      @MikeDayConcrete  Před 4 lety +4

      Hi John, we've been doing it this way for 40 years with no problems. Once the 3/4 aggregate gets under the mesh and rebar it doesn't go back to the dirt when you walk on it. Yes, it's better to have slab bolsters under the wire but it's not a real problem. We also use fiber mesh in the concrete. Really the most important thing is a good gravel compacted sub-base.

When water reducer came out I tried it on a smaller slab just to see and used it ever since. I just never would share my trade secrets with anyone, not even employees. Now retired 5 years. Im sure people appreciate your sharing, nice job

    Love your videos Mike. I’m a concrete guy myself (in Ohio). I enjoy watching various contractor videos to see the different ways people do concrete. No single way is always correct. We all have our own practices. I’ve learned so much in the last 20 years just by picking up different techniques. Those learning experiences have made me a trusted contractor in my area. I rarely work outside 15 miles from my home anymore.

      You might be surprised to know that water reducers (plasticizers), are essentially the same chemical makeup as laundry or dish soap. If you’re just working on small, flat work pieces, you could try adding some to your mix as an inexpensive ‘home-brew’ alternative to the commercially used types.

    • @psidvicious
      @psidvicious Před 4 lety +1

      @@dank2265 Right. It works on the molecular level, by breaking down the surface tension of the water.
      If you’ve ever sprayed a water mixture of insecticide or plant fertilizer on your flower/vegetable garden, only to be frustrated seeing it bead up on the leaves and drip to the ground, a small amount of Dawn liquid can work for this too.
      Just be careful though. A little goes a long way for this application.
