George Lucas was actually strongly opposed to Mel Brooks makeing Space Balls till Brooks invited him to a private screening before the official release date. It's said that Lucas thought it to be funny and gave his blessing once he was assured it was not going to harm any future enstallments to the Star Wars Franchise at the time.
