  • Why are so many of our pets overweight? According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 60% of cats and 56% of dogs in the US are obese or overweight. Of course, no pet owner would purposely make such grave mistakes when it comes to feeding their furry friend. Nonetheless, there are several things you should avoid so that your pet will be happy and healthy!
Do you know, for example, that you should never give your pet human food? A lot of the products we humans eat contain too much salt, sugar, artificial colorants and sweeteners, and fat. All these additives are extremely harmful to pets.
    TIMESTAMPS:
Feeding your pet from a plastic bowl 0:49
Giving your pet human food 1:46
Giving your pet too many treats 2:47

    SUMMARY:
    - While plastic bowls are inexpensive and convenient, they’re not the best for your pet’s health. Both cats and dogs can develop different allergic reactions to plastic. On top of that, some dogs like to chew on their bowl, which means they risk ingesting pieces of plastic.
    - Dogs can develop serious health issues if you let them have avocados, garlic, raisins, chocolate, mushrooms, peaches, or grapes. Most of these products are just as toxic for cats too.
    - If your cat or dog gets treats too often, they’ll lose their appetite for their everyday nutritious meals. This can result in pet obesity.
    - Just like people, dogs and cats should be fed according to their age and lifestyle. Younger animals need to eat more often than older ones since they need more nutrients for proper growth.
    - Dogs especially can't control how much they eat when they see food. Their instincts will scream at them to gobble up everything they find on their plate. This problem is less prominent in felines.
    - Surprisingly, there are those who feed dog food to their cats and vice versa. Interchanging pet foods will lead to serious health complications.
    - Pets, especially dogs, love bones. At the same time, this doesn't mean that you should feed bones to them. It doesn't matter if these bones are from pork, poultry, fish, or beef.
    - Tuna can be used as a treat every now and then. But if you turn it into your cat's everyday diet, this will cause malnutrition. What’s worse, a tuna diet may lead to mercury poisoning.
    - Believe it or not, neither cats nor dogs should be given milk. If, for whatever reason, you have to bottle-feed a newborn pet, you should buy a special formula for puppies and kitties. Cow milk isn't a good substitute for their mom’s milk.

Not all automatic feeders are plastic, though. There are metal ones. I’ve even seen ceramic and marble automatic fountains. A great way to allow water to circulate and make your cat happy! But yes, there are metal automatic feeders. Just gotta look for them and. you don’t get the convenience of glancing at the top to see if it’s empty.

once i found my cat in a very weakened state, hiding in the storeroom and being very dirty so i took her to the vet to see what's up. apparently she got into a fight with a dog based on bite marks the vet found on her leg but otherwise she was fine, just a bit dehydrated (it was summer). the vet told me a trick to make her consume a bit more water than she did by herself: get a bowl of water, dip your hands in it then pet her to soak her fur. she will lick it off and it will end up in her belly

My Pepper had the same thing.. 4 years ago she passed. I was messed up.. My bride and daughter were ALL messed up. I never fully mourned her, I had her 15 years. Just been so busy with all that was going on in life I never had a CHANCE to really think about it, be sad about it, nothing. I just kept moving...
Now a cute little Tonkinese has picked me to be her person, I guess. Just was at my front door and was like, "ok.. I'm here! Guess what? I'm yours!" "I like it here, and I think I'm going to live here..."
She is VERY loving, probably the most loving cat I've ever seen. I've never seen anything like this... And Pepper was an absolute love bundle. I was just going to help this new one out a little, you know? To eat comfortably, without the competition from the other bigger cats outside, and just relax... She was just a skinny little thing.. and I felt bad. Then my wife and kid, after they saw her, and her behavior, said no no no...I GOTTA keep her now, because she trusts me completely... And trying to find her another home would be terrible and traumatizing for her.
... In a week, I FINALLY just, broke down about Pepper.
      4 years later.
This little one just made me break down somehow.
      It still hurts.
      My little dainty Pepper pants.
They pick you, I think. That's what my wife says.
This new little one... She's very easy to love, I can tell you.
Eventually another is probably going to pick you again. That's how it works.
And you will have no choice.

We had a dog like that. When I was younger, we had this dog who was my dad's baby. I think that the dog thought she was #1 wife, and my mom was #2. My dad would literally make a plate of food for this sweetie every night after we had dinner. He would cut everything up for her, and put salt and pepper on everything. Surprisingly, this dog lived to 15. Unfortunately, she got a bad infection because she wasnt spayed, and had to be euthanized. I never saw my dad cry before that day. He loved that dog (Brandy) so much. Hes also gone, and I truly hope that they're together again.

I had no idea where youd get such a huge bunny. Anyway, one day we came home from going to the store. Ths chocolate bunny box was shredded, and the chocolate bunny was gone! My dog (Buster) ate the entire thing! We panicked. But he was 100% fine. Oddly enough, nothing happened to him. He was another one who lived to be 15. He was a wonderful little dog. I miss him.

At 5:18 you show a food silo with a plastic bowl. Using it for water is okay, but using it for food still makes it free food as the food keeps dropping down while eating. And the plastic is prone to bacteria like you said earlier in the video. My cat gets fed four times a day from an automatic dispenser that's supposed to be fitted with a plastic bowl, I use stainless steel instead. I use a silo like that for water. It's a convenient way to keep him healthy besides a healthy amount of toys and playtime.

  • @MariyanStoykov
    @MariyanStoykov Před 5 lety +15

I was with stainless steel bowls, but for some reason I heard they weren't good for them and switched to plastic. Now after this video to steel again.Every other thing on the list I'm avoiding.
It's ridiculous about the food. They say that corn, wheat etc. are bad for cats and dogs, but you can find them in a special science made foods.Especially the big companies like Whiskas, Royal Canin etc. It's just blows my mind.So I feed my felines with food which is grain free.Well at least it doesn't say on the ingredients label. From companies that aren't that big which have commercials thrown in you face.

    • @Whimsy3692
      @Whimsy3692 Před 5 lety +2

I'm only saying this because I care, and have been listening to Jackson Galaxy. Grain-free doesn't mean anything on big company labels. They are legally allowed to put them on the bag, yes, but it only means they'll substitute it with something else, like soy, or cheese, or blueberries, cranberries, or some other sh*t vegetable. Something they have no business eating, and something their bodies were never designed to digest. Cats are hunters, and are only designed to eat meat.
I once saw a Friskies can that had CHEDDAR CHEESE in it. From _Friskies,_ no less. I went, "that's disgusting." I guarentee you it's the same sh*t in Kraft products, too. If it's awful for people, imagine what it does to your cat.
You can switch your cats to a raw diet. It helps with digestion, their coat, dental issues, and more.

    • @MariyanStoykov
      @MariyanStoykov Před 5 lety +1

@@Whimsy3692 Thank you for the comment!
I don't use brand that is popular as Friskies, Whiskas, Royal Canin etc. They are just awful.I use Sam's Field grain free for neutered cats. It's rare to find grain free+neutered. It has chicken, rice, oil from salmon, potatoes, dry apple 6 %, tomatoes 1 % and carrots 1%.
Before that I used to buy Applaws. But they don't grain free+neutered.
As to the coat... they have amazing coat and I don't even brush them. But that's maybe their genes, not from the food.
And to be honest... no matter what text is written on the label... even if it's true... it's a food that's baked or stuffed into small granules which it's ridiculous by itself. They definitely have some smelly stuff for cats to like and want to eat.
And of course they are predators so I try to feed them with foods that they can actually hunt in the wild.By wild I mean woods.Fish isn't they natural food and it can be dangerous too.I feed them them with real chicken too.But I have nowhere near me farms with "happy" chicken, so I don't know how much poison the selled ones in the store have.I'm a vegetarian and it doesn't bother me, but I'll try even harder for my cats!

Also, one thing they forget to mention is that free feeding can lead to animals not eating enough as well. Since they know the food will be there, they can often end up ignoring it since they can come back to it later, which they may not since they're distracted by so many other things or just don't feel like it at that time.

She wanted the water from the bottle. So I'd pour it in the cap, and put it down, and she loved it. That was what she wanted.. So that became all we'd give her. She wanted NO part of the water my coworker put in a bowl on the ground.

Free-feeding can actually be good if your pet knows how to control themselves. We have two cats, one of whom would simply eat the entire bowl and then beg for more. She is on a feeding schedule. But the other one, she will go to her bowl and nibble at it whenever. She never eats the whole thing, or even half of it. So in isolated cases, if your pet is a confirmed grazer, I think it should be fine.

    Hi
I free feed my cat and she grazes all day. She goes through the same amount every day, two small tins and a sprinkle of dry food. I also feed her lots of tuna without it ever being a problem, because all cat food has the necessary additives no matter if it is tuna or turkey or whatever. Otherwise there would be warnings on the tin.

I have put water out for my cat since it was little (He is now 8)and I have yet to see him drink any!I have to be sneaky to stop dehydration by mixing it with his packet food to make the gravy runnier. Yet he will drink milk and loves to finish off my porridge in winter..He loves my bolognaise sauce and the occasional snippet of steak I'll share with him.Always in a metal or porcelain dish
He wanders off for a few days then eats about 2/3 packets, some crunchy cat food and a treat or 2,rests in the house then goes off again.Other times he calls in the house for 3 meals a day, depending on his mood, the weather etc

Alright then tell me where exactly in the original comment did they say anything at all about that applying to every pet? They specifically said they're just talking about their own cat.
I do that with mine for years now and I'll tell you, her vet was very pleased with her during her last check up.
By no means am I saying this applies to all cats or any other pet. I also have a friend who used to leave food out and one of her cats kept overeating and throwing up afterwards, so it's definately not for every pet, but like I said, no one even claimed that to begin with. Some can handle it, some can't so if anyone is ever unsure about it, better be safe and not try it instead of taking chances.
Though calling someone ignorant because they shared their own experience is simply not cool. Finding and sharing what you are passionate about gives you no right to insult people.
Chances are, people will take you more serious if you keep your cinversations friendly instead of sounding like those overly triggered people on the internet.

Dehydration is a big problem in cats who eat dry food. We try to feed ours a bit of wet food every day, but it costs too much to be their entire diet, so we've taken to adding water to their kibble in the morning as if it was cereal (not a ton of water, just a few tablespoons'-worth). Their coats have become a lot softer and sleaker, and they don't even seem to shed as much!

I feed my cat from a puzzle feeder made of cardboard tubes. Just to make it fun for him, in 3 of the tubes, I put a treat instead of normal food. I also sometimes give him a shrimp, or a small bit of egg. He occasionally steals a potato chip and licks it. He's actually a perfect weight.

  • @fauziyak

Another reason for free feeding is that sometimes the food may become soft due to air and moisture and so the crunchiness is gone so the the cats won't like it. Just a suggestion

1: allergy if you're allergic to dogs but not cats you would settle for a cat
