Hey Charlie, you’re not supposed to have wood sticking out of the top. It’s supposed to be under top vent holes. There is a little paragraph on the box that says “ dry hardwoods make the best fuel for smokeless flames. Add logs to your starter flame until bonfire is filled to just below the upper air vents to produce less smoke and a mesmerising flame”.👍
