  • The Ultimate guide to everything within a compact derby car. Interior setup, engine setup, fuel setup, battery setup. Hope this answers many of the same questions I am always getting. Disclaimer: I do NOT know everything about a derby car, nor will I ever know everything. I only give advice to the best of my knowledge and experiences to help new drivers learn the basics.

    A quick tip, don't run your battery ground so long. what I do is clean one of the seat belt bolts/nuts and run my battery ground to that, then run the existing engine ground that used to go to the battery under the hood, and bolt that one to the underhood frame or body. Good Luck!

      Been doin it forever my first shut down was a sump line in my boat fuel tank and i believe. You should run your fuel lines in mostly copper except at the connections AND RUN IT THRU THE FIRE WALL lost derbys wirh my lines hooked up under my seat from outside

  • @jercar404
    @jercar404 Před 9 lety +8

    Also, I never use fuel lines under the car, too much potential for the car to run over something and rip them off. Also, it will save your lines that run through a hole in the floor from getting pinched when the floors get bent. I cut out the blower motor in the heater box, and run them through where the wiper transmission use to be.

    I recommend instead of going and buying a huge thing of wire from the parts store to relocate the battery ( it's expensive) go down to Walmart and get a 20 dollar set of jumper cables and cut the clamps off and pull them apart ...now u have 2 15 feet or 2 gauge thick wire to use for the relocate. found that out from a SR. derby driver parts store charge like 4 bucks a foot ..I priced it ,it was gonna be 68 bucks to relocate my battery to behind my driver seat and all it cost me to do it was a trip to Walmart and 20 bucks. highly recommended that route vs the parts store

    • @38derby93
      @38derby93 Před 6 lety +2

      Those $20 sets aren't thick enough to run you'll burn em apart if you have to crank your engine longer than 2 minutes

    On returnless systems, the fuel needs a pressure regulator back by the pump, which will return fuel back to the tank. If you don't have it regulated, and the engine shuts off with the pump still running, fuel pressure will build and you will pop a fuel line and cause a huge fire.

Like seriously all the interior is in tact for some of them. So its kinda cool cuzz u can just pick up a cheap o compact car, knock out the windows and headlights and ur basically done lol. But im gonna move my gas tank amd batter on the inside and secure the wires/hoses and that will give me a slight advantage

    What do you use for tires, do you bring extra tires with you and rims? Do you put side walls or extra side walls over your existing side walls? And isn’t your radiator very vulnerable in the front of a car. Could that not be moved?

    • @DemolitionMissions
      @DemolitionMissions  Před 6 lety +1

      I always bring extra tires already mounted on rims. Usually try to bring 2 fullsize tires and 1 spare donut tire. I mount extra sidewall flaps on all my newer cars. The rad is always one of the most important parts of a car. Protect it well and try to break the other car's rad first.

    • @DemolitionMissions
      @DemolitionMissions  Před 8 lety

      I unplug all the door wires if possible, or tape them out of the way hanging to the inside of the car. I leave all wires under seats. I cut the cable under the car for the park brake so it can not get caught if I run over a part. Does that focus have fiberglass core support? I know some did.

    I just put a E2000 inline on my compact, and It runs a bit sluggish. Almost like its on the fence about wanting to die or stay kinda idling... Did I do something wrong? I use to have a sending unit in a bucket from a Ford tank. And when I hook that up, there is not pausing or stuttering at all.. Any idea?

    • @DemolitionMissions
      @DemolitionMissions  Před 8 lety

      +Effect2o Do you have a fuel filter with this one? Make sure dirt and rust is not plugging up this new pump. It could be that your new pump does not have enough pressure compared to the old one?

    • @Effect2o
      @Effect2o Před 8 lety

      I do have a filter. I use to have the all metal kind, but after seeing this, it makes sense to have the clear plastic type.
      From the reviews on the E2000, its suppose to have up to 45 psi. I think my compact was at 12. But not sure.
      I will mess with it a bit more. Thanks!!!

    • @Effect2o
      @Effect2o Před 7 lety

      I never did. I had to go back to the old set up I used. A metal bucket with the original pump from inside the gas tank. I sealed it all up.
      I got the E2000 running for like 5 minutes. then choked out. I think its not pushing enough pressure or returning too much. not sure. Im building a new car this year. I will try it again and see.

    Could you use a set of jumper cables as a battery cable?

    • @DemolitionMissions
      @DemolitionMissions  Před 6 lety

      It is strongly not recommended. Jumper cables are not built for long term use of high cranking power, only a brief period. Once a car engine overheats, it takes a LOT more battery power to crank the engine over, which usually melts down the jumper cables.

    • @DemolitionMissions
      @DemolitionMissions  Před 4 lety +1

      moonwatcher123 gaming Since this is your first derby car, it is best to get in the habit of never cutting or removing any wires at all. I wrap all of my wires up into a big bundle, wrap them with tape and then zip tie that ball down somewhere safe. Be very very careful when I start dealing with newer 2004+ cars. Many of them will trigger security if you remove any dash parts. Something as simple as the radio, or control knobs, or speedometer and that computer will lock the car up. I leave the dash in every car to avoid the headache

    why do you not move the fuel lines inside the car

    • @DemolitionMissions
      @DemolitionMissions  Před 8 lety +1

      The factory fuel lines are usually in pretty safe locations under the car so I use them for simplicity of building my cars. I always check to make sure they are not rusty, or hanging down under the car to get caught on anything. BUT on full size cars, you need to move fuel lines inside, because the frame in the middle of the car can bend and drop fuel lines down. Compacts dont have a frame in the middle.

    • @DemolitionMissions
      @DemolitionMissions  Před 3 lety

      Depends on what car. Most fords need the cat to stay on the exhaust to run correctly even for a derby car. Most Chevy cars you can cut the converter off and usually cut exhaust under the driver floor area.
