  • I think this song belongs to the best songs of the sixties!
    "Those Were The Days" is a very nostalgic song for me personally.
    I think about good old times, thats why I really like to listen to this.
    So, if you like to think about old times, tune in! ;)
    Have fun and enjoy!
    Lyrics:
    Once upon a time there was a tavern
    Where we used to raise a glass or two.
    Remember how we laughed away the hours
    And thinking of all the great things we would do.
    Those were the days, my friend,
    We thought they'd never end,
    We'd sing and dance forever and a day;
    We'd live the life we choose we'd fight and never lose
    For we were young and sure to have our way.
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la la la la la.
    Then the busy years went rushing by us,
    We lost our starry notions on the way.
    If by chance I'd see you in the tavern,
    We'd smile at one another and we'd say.
    Those were the days, my friend,
    We thought they'd never end,
    We'd sing and dance forever and a day;
    We'd live the life we choose we'd fight and never lose
    Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days.
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la la la la la.
    Just tonight I stood before the tavern,
    Nothing seemed the way it used to be.
    In the glass I saw a strange reflection,
    Was that lonely woman really me?
    Those were the days, my friend,
    We thought they'd never end,
    We'd sing and dance forever and a day;
    We'd live the life we choose we'd fight and never lose
    Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days.
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la la la la la.
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la la la la la.
    Through the door there came familiar laughter,
    I saw your face and heard you call my name.
    Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
    For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
    Those were the days, my friend,
    We thought they'd never end,
    We'd sing and dance forever and a day;
    We'd live the life we choose we'd fight and never lose
    Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days.
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la la la la la.
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la,
    La la la la la la la la la la.
    "Those Were the Days" is a song credited to Gene Raskin, who put a new English lyric to the Russian romance song "Dorogoi dlinnoyu" ("Дорогой длинною", literally "By the long road"), composed by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevsky. It deals with reminiscence upon youth and romantic idealism.
    Mary Hopkin's 1968 debut single of "Those Were the Days" (producer, Paul McCartney) became a number one hit on the UK Singles Chart. The song also reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, behind "Hey Jude" by McCartney's band The Beatles. It was number one in the very first edition of the foreign singles sales chart launched by the Centre d'Information et de Documentation du Disque.
    Georgian singer Tamara Tsereteli (1900-1968) and Russian singer Alexander Vertinsky made what were probably the earliest recordings of the song, in 1925 and in 1926 respectively.
    The song appears in the 1953 British/French movie Innocents in Paris, in which it was sung with its original Russian lyrics by the Russian Tzigane chanteuse Ludmila Lopato. Mary Hopkin's 1968 recording of it with Gene Raskin's lyric was a chart-topping hit in much of the Northern Hemisphere. On most recordings of the song, Raskin is credited as the sole writer, even though he wrote only the later English lyrics (which are not an English translation of the Russian lyrics) and not the music.

    I guess I was melancholy before my time; I was deeply moved by this song in 1968 when I was a young man of but 27, now it’s as if that was yesterday.

    Tekst polski do tej piosenki jest równie piękny
    Nie wiesz nawet ile ci zawdzięczam
    Byłam sama jak ty byłeś sam
    Nie umiałabym odszukać szczęścia
    A ty sprawiłeś że smak jego znam
    To były piękne dni
    Po prostu piękne dni
    Nie zna już dziś kalendarz takich dat
    Wtedy uczyłeś mnie
    Wymawiać imię swe
    Wtedy rzuciłeś dla mnie cały świat
    La la la
    To były dni
    Niezapomniane dni
    Uczuć teraz czas już nie odmierza
    Miłość nie trwa tak jak dawniej wiek
    Kilku dniom swe szczęście się powierza
    One mogą nadać życiu sens
    To były piękne dni
    Po prostu piękne dni
    Jeśli jeszcze kiedyś się spotkamy
    Może w moich oczach będą łzy
    Bo nie łatwo żyć jest wspomnieniami
    Słowem „ja" zastąpić słowo „my"
    To były piękne dni
    Po prostu piękne dni

    So someone sent me this song, but I've never heard it before and can't decifer it's meaning. The person is someone I was once engaged to who 8 years later, we still love each other, though he has moved on. Can someone help me out on why he might have sent this song and what it portrays? Thank youc🙏💗

    • @lonetree1941
      @lonetree1941 Před 11 měsíci +2

      If I were him sending this to you, with those shared experiences it would be to let you know how treasured those days were and still are. There’s an element of regret in such an act, in reminding another of a passage of time in this manner. There’s also the question, do you share this still, since now, there are only memories left, everything else has changed. The lyrics say my friend but more is implied, to say my friend is perhaps to understate the manner of things all these years later.

    • @angelfroglisa2
      @angelfroglisa2 Před 11 měsíci

      @David Wright Thank you for giving me this perspective, I really appreciate it. What you said makes sense for my situation, and I can better understand why this person sent me this song and where he might have been coming from. Because of the depth of what we still feel for each other, we could never be just friends. Sometimes, it's like that with deeper soul connections, such as ours. It's something I've made peace with. Thanks again for taking the time to offer up an interpretation. 🫶
