Wow I was riding a British 3 speed everyday in MInneapolis for ten years - starting in 2000 or so - hilarious. I had no idea - is this - the 2nd one and it's still going on annually. Congrats - to Minnesota for honoring the best commuter designed bicycle!! So tough, so comfortable - makes it a pleasure to ride bicycle.
when I was a kid....here in the USA.....owning a genuine English Raleigh was something to be proud of. At that time American bicycles had big thick tires and looked "stupid". I got a red Raleigh "colt" for my 8th birthday in 1962. It was such a big deal to get a Raleigh that I still remember my dad taking me up the highway to a bike shop called "Cycle Center" in Natick, Massachusetts. I virtually lived on that bike till I was 17 years old.
Fuck off
Just picked up a 1970 Superbe on the cheap, so this world is all new! Super beautiful green and nice, but cheap because it wasn't shifting right. I watched a video on refurbishing a Sturmy Archer hub and realized it would be a great project to do with my son, whose screen time is too darn much! The hub is really cool inside with nifty looking gears and parts, like a puzzle. Saving an old bike to me, is definitely better than buying a new one.
3-speed internal hubs are the Bomb
they almost never break Lasts forever and just needs an occasional oiling
unlike the messy derailleur system prone to all kinds of failures-adjustment-chain jumping-dirt-etc.
Totally right. I prefer a 5 speed internal hub myself. They should be implemented into modern bikes.
I had NO idea my 3 speed had an internal hub instead of the derailleur. I always wondered WHY that bicycle held up to all kinds of tough treatment - after ten years of daily riding of ten miles or so in Minneapolis then I went on a 250 mile "bike-about" along the Mississippi river. I never ONE did any maintenance on that bicycle - it was a Triumph. Probably from the 1980s based on the bicycle rack design. thanks
Great vidio 2021
that's niiiiiiice. I just found my third thrown out three speed. quite like this one, but more beat up and it's got rod brakes. a charming bike and a great vid!
I love vintage Raleighs. I currently own a 1955 Raleigh Superbe myself, which I rebuilt from the frame-up, using as many original Raleigh parts as possible (albeit, mix-matched years, i.e. the 1953 handlebars and 1990 Sturmey-Archer rear hub). It is sad that it was likely stripped for its parts when I obtained the frame from an English seller, but I am happy to have rebuilt it and given it a second life as a daily rider in Japan.
I've got 2, a silver 76 and a green 69. I always loved the feel of the ride of the old Raleigh. You go into corners, it handles like a motorcycle, very predictable, you know exactly what its doing. And unlike today's bikes, very little maintenance and made to last forever! Just love my trusty Raleigh sports, unlike people, they never let me down. I'd like to be buried with them, but that would be cheating somebody out of a nice ride...
I let a silver circa 76 get away somehow. The oldest bike i have now is a early 95 trek 750. The Raleigh got me through high school. My bad in not keeping it and not appreciating living so many years in a bikeable area.
Estou remontando a que eu usei nos anos 70. Uma Rudge com cambio de 1968
i just got a 1950 one i have no idea what one it is but its army green front and rear lights, and i picked it up for 30 bucks, it has the old key hole in the froks in the front i gues thats how they locked it up back then, its mint, hasnt been ridden in almost 52 years, its 60 years old now so its awesome id say its an awesome find.
I'm a fan of sturmey Archer and Raleigh and have converted an old Raleigh superb to a 5 gear IGH, the frame was an immaculate bike which had never been ridden or indeed taken out of the garage. It was sold alongside a Raleigh Superbe similar to the one in the video, untouched, immaculate and original. It went for £65. If I'd seen this I'd have bought it and shipped it if I'd have knownthere were folk that still appreciate this kind of stuff. Shame.
Glad to see you like these English bikes, never thought I'd see Uncle Sam's citizens appreciate the Superb so much. n.b. I had a 1982 model, with fully enclosed chain case,3 speed hub gears, rod brakes doing about 30MPH earlier today. Secret is blow the tires up to as much as they'll take,60PSI & change the pedals to a "quill" type that'll use toe clips & straps, you'd surprise many a much more modern bike with the accelaration you'd be capable of(:-} The looks I have had recently are worth it!
Way to go!
Nice...good
This is very addictive.Bought my 3rd 3 speed Raleigh and pretty rough and I enjoy restoring them but my wife complains why I need so many...Well now I am addicted... Something about these bikes resonates with me.Few weak points.Break calipers are junk and wheels are steel prone to rust and dont perform well in breaking. You can lace alloy wheel and nicer breaks .Break levers very thin putting pressure on your hands.Well they are not perfect but like life nothing is...
Those sturmey archer hub gears were bombproof, a little oil now and again and they will go for ever,
Great video. Where is your "shop" where you work on and restore these Gems?
me gustaria saber donde yo puedo comprar una caja de cambio de tres cambio inglesa la regularmente usaban la bibcicleta raleigh el que me pueda ayuda que me diga donde please.thanks.
nice
absolutely fascinating video...I'd like to contact Bruce Morrow on a bike project...?
I have a 1971 Sports and added the 22 tooth rear sprocket to,..a much improved ride, i highly recomend it !!
@supercarsify well hi,i couldent help notecing your coment on this video and its really nice to see younger guys like you and me actually having the knoledge and passion to restore bikes! i taught i was the only young kid who also does it! what kind of bikes have you restored ?
Eu tenho uma dessas, aqui no Brasil elas são muito raras.
I have three Raleigh Sports 3 speed bicycles and one three speed Scan.
I ride them all in rotation. All of the Raleighs rear hubs are in good order, but I
wonder where I'd get a hub rebuilt. Nothing lasts forever. The Scan is my junker
winter bike.
I wear regular clothes when I ride, and sometimes use a pants clip.
0:14 Not sure if this guy knows - but there are literally thousands of steel bike fans, and fans of Sturmey-Archer hubs, who actively restore and refurbish these every day in America. If only .0005 % of the approximately 360 million Americans were keeping these rugged bikes alive, that’s a “mechanics army” of 180,000 people.
Lovely bicycle,in Britain ,Raleigh both bikes and Sir Walter is pronounced rally.
Awesome I have an olive drab/white gold stenciling 23 in 5 speed with all parts original save the rear tire an blue grips Sturmey Archer hub with controls on both sides made in 1967. I ride it twenty miles most days to the nearest town to get vids to rent. I believe it is a Humber made version from Nottingham with a Brooks saddle. I do not know the model.
Neat.
But whats its Doug score?
dynohub is on the wrong side.... other than that its a nice restoration with a cool color....
any lock and key shop wirth their sakt can cut a key for your bike if you are so inclined.
rear rack is a prestube rack... correct on the factory option.
i have twenty-eight bikes, mostly british steel lightweights, some I've done full restorations to while others are survivors showing their lifes wear. mostly my collection is original paint, decals etc. Complete breakdown to the bearings, cleaning and rebuilding.... very enjoyable hobby with the bonus of keeping fit while riding.
i love raleigh, hercules, rudge, triumph, dunelt, bsa, phillips and more!
wish they would reproduce the vintage dunlop tubes.... the modern woods tubes are ugly.
i have a raleigh sport, do you know where to buy tires for this 26 x 1 3/8 in usa?
Yeah any bike shop
Very interesting about the English bikes with the internal multi-speed hubs going all the way back to the early 20th century now it's interesting during the 20th century or the very early part of it American bicycle companies did not incorporate sturmey Archer 3 speed into some of their models except for one company back in late 1930s into 1940s was a company called Schwinn and they built lightweight models no one as the superior and the new world and the Schwinn lightweight model called The Paramount tourist these bicycles were meant for adults but the English bicycles did not appear into this country until I'll probably go to say 1949 or early fifties incorporating the sturmey Archer 3 speed gear setup then you figure back in the 50s you could probably set up a middleweight bicycle with a 3 speed or 3 speed drum brake case in point I do have from the original owner a 1951 Schwinn red phantom that he special ordered for that year at 3 speed drum brake by sturmey Archer that was installed by the dealer at a Schwinn shop along with a front drum brake that was installed also by the dealer buy prepping that special order that the owner wanted when he was 12 years old.
Nice #powerlifting71
Are you still having headset trouble? I would imagine its most likely the grease in your headset has been contaminated or run dry. You shouldn't leave crucial parts like that to chance - open her up and see!
And no, you shouldn't tighten it - unless it's loose? Frankly it sounds as though you might need to take it to a bicycle shop if you don't understand these things.
do in a little 3 speed research
bla bla ! ride it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but bike man this is a 4 speed!
henry ford never said any colour as long as it is black sorry
the american way of saying raleigh always makes me laugh, it sounds like raweliegh or something like that to me
You pronounce Raleigh, RAYLEE not RAWLEE ,,, take it from an Englishman.
+Rikitocker We changed some other words, too... :-)
RALLY
Nobody’s going to fight you on it but if they did they’d lose....
