  • I bought a Portable Medical Ultrasound Scanner (Bladder Scanner) to try and re-purpose for scanning a few of our sheep. The unit wasn't broken, but it did have a small fault which I do end up repairing. Let's take it apart, see what's inside, poke around at the software and see what hidden secrets it contains!!

    A man with these skills pulling out a Fluke 179 (my first decent DMM and quite my favorite) to make measurements certainly is a man after my own heart! Intriguing and fun channel not to mention the most pleasant and "listenable' accent ever! Bravo!

      Thanks John! I know I've got quite a strong a 'Geordie' accent so when I started doing videos I wasn't sure if people would like or dislike it. I used to use a fluke 77 (still own that and a 73) which is on a lot of my earlier videos. I upgraded to the 179 earlier this year as saw a used one on Ebay for a reasonable price. Thanks again for your feedback, much appreciated 👍

      These industrial/commercial systems have appalling security levels (or lack of security) it seems. I've been told that each and every fire alarm panel from a certain manufacturer has the same password that can't be changed (and it's something like a two-digit number with two identical digits, like 99).

    Hah, of course it runs doom! It looks like the stock CF card is running Windows XP Embedded, a stripped down version of the OS intended for applications like this. Geode processors and card-computer modules like that are fairly common in embedded applications for industrial and commercial systems. They're low on power draw but offer good computing power for non-computer devices like handhelds and whatnot. I used to have an IBM thinclient that had a Geode processor in it and it ran Linux natively on a 64MB CF card.

    That Nicad battery pack likely is still good. They probably will charge up if the machine is left plugged in for 16 hours or so unless some of the cells have an internal short. If they do zap each shorted cell with two or 3 times the voltage it usually runs at for a few seconds at a time until it shows some voltage output. Then charge normally. I have Nicad batteries that have been used for 10 years or more as long as they don't leak.

    It looked like the board was perhaps trying to charge that coincell battery since the residual voltage of the old cell was dropping while you measured it. That would not be very healthy for an ordinary CR2032, so perhaps you should install a schottky diode in series with your new battery? Or put a rechargeable one in there.

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  Před 10 měsíci +2

      I thought perhaps it had some residual voltage in it after I removed it as there was no load on it, and measuring it was slowly draining what was left? I don't think PC CMOS batteries are usually rechargeable rechargeable, but this one might be different..

    • @mcg6762
      @mcg6762 Před 10 měsíci +1

    Looks like it runs a version of windows xp embedded. I wonder if its been custom made to not include explorer and stuff.

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  Před rokem

      It does indeed run XP embedded. I did find a way to run explorer and cmd etc by going into the touch screen calibration part and there is also an option to add printer which let's you browse the file system then you can double tap on explorer or and other applications 🙂

      Thanks👍I've used it to scan the sheep and a friends dog who was pregnant, although it's quite hard to interpret what you see on the screen. I did see little spines with the sheep, but the dog it was all like black circles.

  • @zs1dfr
    @zs1dfr Před 9 měsíci +1

    An ultrasound is an ultrasound - you shouldn't have to invoke a different app to look at a bladder or a liver, or a uterus or an ovary. As long as your transducer can make good ultrasonic contact with the skin of the patient (sheep), you should be able to scan her abdomen? Or have you found otherwise?

    • @BuyitFixit
      @BuyitFixit  Před 9 měsíci

      I would think the same, perhaps it just sticks a label on or interprets some of the data differently? I actually used it a couple of weeks back on or sheep and it looks like we could see a skull and a spine, also tried it on a friends dog about a week ago, we could see round circles which is supposed to be right for the stage she is at.

    • @zs1dfr
      @zs1dfr Před 9 měsíci

      You will not see inside a skull very well, because there will be too much ultrasound reflection from the side of the skull closest to you. For the same reason, you won't see behind a person or animal's pelvis. But through the abdominal wall, you should with time be able to identify organs that don't contain air (air is a poor conductor of the ultrasound signals you want to see). So bowel and lungs etc won't show, and will get in the way of other organs (like heart) you may wish to see. Thanks for the interesting tear down! @@BuyitFixit
