@@TyrannosaurusCHEX I think reason for that would be that Hermes was nothing without his feet. Even in the mythology he never had superhuman strength or anything like that. He was the god of information and messages so he was just fast due to his legs (in the game due to the boots)

that mosquito did more damage to kratos than hermes.
So I had a "duh" moment. Kratos tells Atreus about the tortoise and the hare and the way he explains the story it was whatever until after watching this I realized...was he referring to this bout with Hermes? Kratos being the "tortoise" he was steady and disciplined while Hermes the "rabbit" was sure of victory and foolish. The tortoise wins as we see clearly here lol.
It's a good observation- the real tortoise and the hare story is a race where the hare stops for a sleep half way, confident in victory, and the tortoise overtakes him. I assumed at the time kratos left out all the details because such things seemed superfluous to him but in reality he may well have been alluding to this fight without wanting Atreus to know his violent past.
Which is hilarious when you realize one of the symbols of Hermes is a tortoise.
Kratos mentions a man from his homeland with brief and purposeful stories. He’s talking about Aesop, the man who wrote that story.
But maybe he felt a connection with it after this.
It depends if ur talking about which god of war but if u talk about god of war 3 then sure but anything after that is kinda wrong because god of war was changed to norse mythology instead of greek mythology after kratos died sacrificing himself

Hermes runs away, however, he is not a coward, he is toying with Kratos.
After all, like the other Olympus gods, he has a ego to protect and a hubris to fullfill.
He knows he can not fight Kratos, so he plays around, this in turn actually leads to possible ways Kratos gets Game Over'd by having to deal with the environment.
Listen to Hermes dialogue:

Hermes does not take Kratos seriously at all..
Not to mention how he constantly stops to taunt Kratos, posing in all sorts of different manners to annoy the Ghost of Sparta.
Hermes did not prepare himself for this "battle", he did not bring any weapons, the enemies and traps set around seem to be more related to outside problems than Hermes.
Unlike the other Gods of Olympus, He doesn't treat this "battle" like a fight, he treats it like a game.
Even when tired and cornered, he could just jump off the edge and continue to run away, but he does not.
Take a listen to some of his cornered dialogue:
