My old Dad's pride & joy was his Atki 6 wheel unit ....Cummins NH 220 & ZF gearbox...he took it all over the UK & it shone...think it broke his heart when it was taken from him in a re-allocation. A good driver forms an unbreakable bond with his vehicle I always think....They were happier days..

Drove two of these in the day on general haulage. No. 1 Johnson's wrecker, MDT was an ex Irish motor bought by Norman Billington at Lancaster and No.2 STF as K & P Iddon. I think I was the last to have nights out in this one.

Atkinson vehicles were great in their day and I remember most of these hauliers and I thought Suttons of St Helens would be there, they had a massive fleet of Atkis, they were probably there best customer, the worst thing to happen to Atkinson was when Seddon bought them and it was all down hill from then on. The tractor units they made with that useless piece of junk Perkins V8 510 engine was a disaster with the constant head gasket problems they had, Seddon certainly made a balls up of Atkinson by not continuing with their quality truck building policy and both company's paid the price for that folly along with the rest of the British truck industry which at one time lead the world.

Many of these were mid seventies motors so only about 12 or 13 years old, mind you there were still a few Atkinsons working in 1988.
