- A stunningly intimate conversation between a world-weary Glenn Gould and the CBC's Vincent Tovell, conducted on 4 December 1959, two years after Gould's triumphant tour of the Soviet Union, five years prior to his final concert.
Who do we have to thank for this treasure? A native Torontonian, fellow Gouldian CZcamsr who answered my call for the full version of Glenn Gould's Toronto and who threw this interview in as a bonus! We are forever in his debt.
Pencil sketch of Glenn Gould by the amazing yuzu1009. Please check out her channel for other works of true artistic wonder: / yuzu1009
I created a single MP3 file of the entire interview. You can download it for free here: www.mediafire.com/?knyn1tnyz1n - Zábava
Благодарю за это сокровище! Бесподобная запись. Нет слов. Изумительно! С любовью из Белоруссии ❤️
These first few seconds are beyond astonishing
It is astonishing how much a single individual can give to the world......
You can hear Glenn humming this and in this case, it sounds just fine. It makes you feel he is right in the room with you. Wonderful.
In any case, it's wonderful.
The most beautiful intellectual musician of all time love this man so much thank you for every glorious note and thanks for uploading this
What does that even mean? Nonsense
His days of glory around 12to 13 !! I like to hear him speak, not a word is wasted and all in that charming Canadian accent. What a talent.
no words can explain
Such an amazing pianist and intelligent man ever,
a True Gem!, Thank You!!!
Glenn, always exceptional.
Oddly enough, I prefer the way his transcription to the actual quintet... What a master...
Thanks for posting. The net comes into its own when people share stuff like this :)
Glenn Gould ROCKS!
Such a gorgeous drawing of him
thank you very much! pure treasure!
The discussion after the most-watched part of it is very interesting.
Picture from Glenn's one trip to the Caribean... : )
Thanks so much for posting all of this. Never thought that I so easily would have access to the content of these conversations. 9 Favo's, obviously.
Genial! te agradezco de todo corazón...
Thank you for posting
I join you in praise of our Torontonian benefactor.
That fellow Gouldian CZcamsr is Gouldian manna raining down from heaven.
I am a mere conduit. ;)
Thank you so much for the interview. One of the greatest geniuses of our time. Please repost the full mp3 somewhere. All the best. E.R.
Glad you enjoyed them, Capt.
grazie
С любовью из России! Огромное спасибо!
I'd have loved to hear him play the Erinnerung.
Adoro!
Спасибо это восхитительно
Enjoy!
...I read somewhere that Gould would actually have written out all of his interviews before actually having them...I wonder is this particular sit-down is an exception.
let's see, i just found a wonderful treasure trove of goodies on the this most excellent of youtube channels. somehow, someway it'll be taken down in a week or two. thanks for providing all this fascinating material, erp65. do u remember "accountofthesun"? it was the most wonderful youtube channel of art documentaries and rare artist interviews. poof! it up and disappeared.
@eek4rus - Parts of it, perhaps. I hear moments of genuine discovery as well.
I think not, mb. His later interview with Tim Page was, indeed, scripted. But this conversation with Vincent Tovell, as well as the later 1969 "Glenn Gould: Concert Dropout," have the ring of genuine discovery (to my ears, at least).
in an odd way, he was also a beatnick, like kerouac and ginsberg and the whole gang
I'm reupping the mp3 now. Gonna try MediaFire this time. zShare keeps deleting them after 60 days of inactivity.
@MrRinaldo83 - The opening piece? It's Gould's transcription of a Bruckner string quartet (Gould says so at 1:30).
I'd like to have heard Gould play some Franz Schmidt. The Adagio from the G major String Quartet, or the whole Third Symphony, for example.
Quintet he says, and that's correct
@SimmySlydeJr2 -- He did indeed -- especially his television "chats" with other musicians. Also, check out his interview with Tim Page on the "Glenn Gould: A State of Wonder" CD set. Scripted.
This interview, however, as you suggest, seems unscripted to me, as does his interview with John McClure "Glenn Gould: Concert Dropout" (which I've also uploaded).
But one never knows with the inveterate prankster, does one?
Insuperabile Glenn ! Sempre vivo nella memoria! Melytta
Does anyone know what piece he played in the begging? Thanks very much!
It is piano piece though :/ not quintet
His own transcription of Bruckner String Quintet (3rd movement)
He even says it himself afterwards.. :D
Quintet*
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
There's "Error 404 - File Not Found" with that mp3.
Sorry, beautiful music, but what is the composer?
I wonder - though it's not terribly important - is this scripted?
Regards and thnks so much for this, erp56
貴重な!!(笑)
@erp65 I'm sure Gould's scripting of interviews began long after 1959. Later, everything was scripted. Have you seen "Glenn Gould's Toronto"? Every word is scripted ... yet he SEEMS so spontaneous. It's uncanny and almost a bit unsettling. GG became more and more of a control freak in his life. I love his playing, but I think something was a bit unbalanced in his personal life. (It's almost a cliche to say so, I suppose.)
He may not have scripted this like later interviews, but I can imagine the questions and answers here being gone over beforehand... possibly with Gould suggesting questions. As much as I like watching any Gould videos, the scripted stuff just comes off as bizarre. His obsessiveness with control slowly grew beyond his playing and into every aspect of his life it seems
No different than any interview you see on T.V. chat shows today. It's all scripted. That's why they sound so seamless.
the interview scripting happened later, apparently after his hypochondria and polypharmacy had turned him into a control freak.
thank you very much! pure treasure!
