So happy to see Islam getting his flowers as the best in the world. It was only a few fights ago the talk was he wasn't even deserving of a title shot and he wasn't on the level of top lightweights. The signs of his greatness have been there- his immaculate striking defense, sophisticated counter striking, and simple though almost always on point strike selection, but so few were willing to see

But going in there on short notice and knocking out Islam it a tall tall tall ask. If anyone on earth could do it, it would be Volk. Khabib and Islam are two rare talents we are lucky to witness. Their story is different than other MMA fighters they grow up doing this under a very good coach khabib’s father. Now khabib is done with it which means we only have Islam which is what left from this amazing book and we should appreciate it.

khabib is less impressive as he is cuts a lot of weight to get to 155 pounds. he is stronger than all his opponents except for one . imo khabib is basically a weight bully . what he did is still very impressive.

You know a lot of fighters cut weight right - Poirier, Gaethje (tho most of the time he's lighter), Oliveira, Chandler, even the lower ranked fighters like Turner, Dober (think he's the heaviest?), RDA. Look at other weights, it's the same. You don't sound like a hater, you have the gene lol give the man his credit, he is the best LW of all time with no asterisk.

I love his style, Islam always captivated me with his style, yes he sticks to the fundamentals, but it works perfectly, i think one of his strongest points is that he sticks to the plan, he really just goes there and execute it. I'm glad i was rooting for this guy ever since i watched him fight against Tsarukyan, i believe in him, i believe he'll be remembered as one of the best fighters to ever do it.

They’re trying to bury this fight. Most people have either not talked about it or went with the short notice excuse. All the while, the same people say if Usman (on short notice as well) had two more rounds he would’ve finished Khamzat

Another reason Volk leaned into the kick (other than he was trying to brace and went lower), was that Makhachev went for the kick immediately after Volk moved his rear leg inwards and back, so Volk’s weight was more on his rear leg, and his upper body was leaning slightly forwards.

@@JTeya0 Just watched Luke Thomas’ breakdown.. He said something a bit different. He said Volk’s head went low because he shifted his hips back, reacting what he thought will be a lower kick. I didn’t catch that before (haven’t seen it from that camera angle)

I think I now understand why Volk leaned into the kick to block an expected body kick. I've never learned to block that way so I was really surprised to see the fight end like this.
One of Islam's coaches is Taekwondo Olympic. It'd be interesting to see how different from Karate kicks
Islam's kicking technique isn't perfect but he's for sure improving every fight. He's getting crisper as a striker
Islam actually has a beautiful, fluid kicking technique. One of the best you'd ever see someone doing it.
I think most people confuse his LACK of different kicking angles for his lack of kicking ability.
Unlike people like WB, Leon, Izzy, Alex Pereira, and others who grew up focusing on kicking, Islam grew up focusing on wrestling. So the fact that he could do that Muay Thai high kick as efficiently and fluidly as he does... is a testament to his natural talents as an MMA fighter.
Charles also grew up being a kicker, alongside his BJJ; but Charles' Muay Thai kick --- the one that devastated Benny --- is awkward and stiff, compared to Islam fluid left leg.
No question about it, Charles has more ability to deliver kicks and he's WILLING to take more risks to kick many different ways.
Islam, on the other hand, relies largely on three staples: the Thai teep (or straight horse kick, as I like to call it); the mid section/liver kick, and the high kick.... with 95% of the time using just his naturally superior left leg.
If you watch Islam working on the heavy bag or against a striking coach.... when he tries to use his right leg, he's quite awkward and slow. He needs to set it up with an exaggerated hip twist (because he's a purely southpaw who doesn't want to pretend he's good in both orthodox and southpaw; he knows southpaw is his strength, so 98% of the time, he's just southpaw).
That means Islam's left leg, when he throws it, flies naturally forward, in a smooth arch, be it to the liver or the side of an opponent's head. Islam's Muay Thai knee (the left one, of course) also is a beauty to watch. Again, for someone known entirely as a wrestler from the beginning all the way to the fight that won him the belt, Islam's accurate and efficient Muay Thai left leg has been quite under appreciated.
But, as someone who grew up watching classic Muay Thai kicks, I understood it from 2-3 years before he fought Charles... that Islam has a fluid, accurate & deadly left leg.

IQ Fighting, Makhachev represented mixed martial arts perfectly
and he didn't react to Volk's faints even avoided a leg kick without moving away from his position which lead to Volk getting pressured to the fence and get finished
Islam is a rare talent arguably more talented and well rounded than Khabib, now emerging into his prime I think he’ll go 30+ wins undefeated

Wassup wonder boy love ur vids u have good advice I have a question I’m 25 6’2 170 wno martial arts experience but I’m obsessed and I’m willing to put the work in I know the good an bad that come w it long term like u said I get a little discouraged when I think about how people been doing it so much longer than me but I stay possitive u can work harder than them I love karate style but know it has a lot of wholes like boxing an all that so do u feel like it’s a waiste to start w karate an fill in the gaps w other martial arts or since I’m so late should jus start w mma/kickboxing muay tai bjj stuff that a lil more direct to fighting I know it’s a money thing to different schools teach different things an I can’t jus take everything also I know I don’t have all the time in the world but yea would love ur advice

Not to get ahead way too soon about the future, but if Islam knocks out Justin Gaethje in their inevitable fight next year, that would be the greatest plot twist in MMA history. A guy who many people thought was a boring grappler version of Khabib turned one of the finest strikers in MMA, in a matter of 2 years of appearance.

I guess there's also the "element of surprise" I mean Islam is known for throwing body kicks but head kicks feel out of place for him or maybe I need to rewatch his fights. Against someone like Yair you know that kicks are a big part of his game so you might work on that.
Another thing I don't understand is why don't people do what Fedor did against Crocop in their pride fight? Anytime Crocop was throwing a kick it didn't matter where Fedor would block the head,body and rise the leg to check. None of that "leave the head exposed to protect the body"
You mean the muay thai block? Where he lifts his arm up to block the head, the knee up to block the body, and with leg lifted avoids the low leg kick?
Good for blocking kicks, but does leave you susceptible to takedowns. Cro Cop was a striker, so Fedor had no incentive to be wary of a takedown attempt.
A champ should never take a short notice fight. Gamrot was the backup fighter.

Short guys are always more susceptible to head kicks because it is easier to reach their head, like WB said, less ground to cover, especially for taller guys. Volk did lose his first fight ever to a taller opponent that head kicked him and nearly lost to Max via head kick and now to Islam via head kick.

He had soft tissue surgery that is nothing and short notice would be valid if Islam dragged him down in later rounds and finished him.
As that only affects cardio and Islam finished him in the first with a headkick.
Full camp or not Volk would lose the same.

At the time the video was made, all of that was true, but fighters improve, which is what Islam has done, he's not going to be exactly the same, good fighters improve and change what isn't working.
