A little marimba ditty. Originally written for solo piano, this is a beautiful piece of music composed by Philip Glass. I saw a fellow classmate do this arrangement at his percussion recital at IU and I got inspired to do it myself. Enjoy!
PS - Sorry about the loud buzzing that gets louder and louder. My MacBook decided to be a bad audience member and was making lots of noise. Hope it isn't too distracting!
Glass's pieces almost always convey a certain subtle anxiety; in this piece it's almost nonexistent, & you've captured the softness & elusiveness of that perfectly. Such a wonderful performance.
What's really nice about your performance is that the eighth vs. triplet rhythm in the piece is probably not something often encountered by pianists, but fairly routine for percussionists. You nailed it.
Well said.
It's sensational. Like it was written for a percussionist.
I love comments like this. I am not a trained musician but am a great appreciator of music. This really helps my listening skills.
Pianists do encounter that rhythm fairly often, but not as often as I imagine percussionists do. I think a big reason is because percussionists tend to play more modern pieces which have more complex polyrhythms. in any case, it was really well communicated!
@@SamuelCEllis Technically a piano is a percussion instrument because of the hammers striking the strings.
I know this is a decade old, so I'm late getting to it, but it's gorgeous.
Beautiful Performance young man. I hear only your magnificent music 😎🙏🍀🤙
Really very beautiful. The Marimba has such a lovely dreamlike warm poignant sound.
P.S. your website is stylish, but doesn't say much about you. Maybe that's how you want it........
that's...
fantastic
I've watched it with open mouth
Sounds great, so subtle.... and what a fantastic skill one must have to play an instrument like this. Well done, Evan Chapman, I hope you record many more pieces by Philip Glass, they sound just right on marimba.
My purest congratulations man, spend last hour playing it on piano; came here and find this: hypnotic, tribal taste and crystalline, beautiful.
(fascinated from Spain)
Fantastic! Besides your technical command of the instrument, the feeling is just right.
BRAVO!!!
Stunning my guy
Beautiful performance! A crime that no one had decent microphones that day, Could have been a master piece!
I like how your extremely focused look contrasts the calmness of the song.
Nice cup of tea
I never used to write comments on youtube, but right now i can't help myself. That is pretty astonishing. He's got me stuck on repeat
Very good, friend.
Beautiful work. The dynamics of Glass’ solo piano works translate so amazingly to percussion. The swaying polyrhythmic flow is wonderful. Thank you.
Mesmerised by your ability to capture Philip Glass's enormously relaxing classical piece. Well done!
Tearjerkingly beautiful and meticulously played. My life is now complete.
I love this so much. The simple complexity of it really comes out when you can see the relationship of rhythm and tone on this instrument.
Brilliant. This piece transfers well to this instrument.
I bet Phil Glass would love this.
This is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen I swear
it´s simply beautiful - heart and soul touching - thanks!!!!!
♥️
Mille Mercis à vous Evan pour cette interprétation qui démontre toutes les possibilités de cet instrument : les marimba. C'est léger, délicat ...votre performance rayonne et me met en joie !
I remember seeing Philip Glass in concert in '82, as he was promoting this album . . I loved it . . and oddly, there were probably about the same amount of people in the audience then as have commented here on this piece . . But that being said, it allowed me the ability to leave my seat in the back, and step right up for a great seat . . . . Now excuse me while I move on and listen to Ennio Morricone's the Good, The Bad, and the Ugly on the Sweet Potato
Bravo!!!
awww... warm, homesic, beautiful :')
***** i was wondering what happened to your recording of Virginia Tate? I really loved your take on it.
This is really really beautiful...
Cheers for this. One of my favorite Glass pieces, and hearing it on the marimbas was magic. Brilliant!
Absolutely fantastic work.
this is so beautiful..
I played this for a recital last year...such a nice, relaxing piece.
Kudos Evan Chapman!!!! A fantastic rendition of my favourite piece of music EVER!!
Finding your interpretation of this Philip Glass song as well as your arrangement of Flim by Aphex Twin has been the surprise of the day for me. Both are beautiful.
Impressive and beautiful!

Nice job! The Zeltsmans are perfect for this piece!
Hey man, you're awesome. This is amazing.
EGGCELLENT!!! Love this piece. I play it daily on my piano. Takes some serious concentration to keep the eight-note / triplet brain math going and going. Sweet job. Congrats!!!
Lol i'm a pure shit at math and i still can play this piece that's weird :p
Its actually freakishly easy to play.
Well done!
I Just Loved All Video...
You really did a good job, and wow :) You are very good performer :)
epic mate! was put into a trance!
Maravilloso
Can there be such beaty? Oh yes.
Really enjoyed this. Great piece of music, beautifully played. Found you after listening to Steve Reich's Piano Phase. Wondered if you'd give that a go if you haven't already. Either way, thank you.
maravillosa melodía
Muito bom, interpretou de forma majestrosa
Am i the only one who prefers this over the original?
nice dynamics, very tricky even on piano!!
you hardly make mistakes but manage to play so smoothly. this is awesome, and so are your drum covers (from toe to ke$ha). you should check out the band pretend, especially the track 'these luminous noises are god' which can be found on youtube. the drumming in their music is totally tasteful and insane and I think you'd like it a lot. maybe enough to do a cover!
Has anyone tried calling the phone number in the back?
+TheIronChicken interesting points ,if anyone else wants to learn about how do i build a marimba try Corbandy Simple Instrument Crusher (just google it ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my brother in law got amazing results with it.
cause it's a spam ad
TheIronChicken I wonder if anyone actually had tried
ha ha no, not yet ;-)
The amazing thing about the 812 Area Code, is that the major city of this Indiana aera is... EVANSVILLE !!!!!
Built for Evan Chapman I guess..
GREAT!!!!!! miauwwww
Heh. Noticed that 812 number in the background. I live in Bloomington too.
that's great; pretty impressive
***** its a nice video try these Corbandy simple instrument crusher
***** same difference. Compliment's a compliment. and I can't play at all lol
+candygeorgieGaming shut up troll
+candygeorgieGaming
10 - 7 = 3
103 -100 = 3
Same difference.
Mind if I use that one sometime?
Very interesting :)
Félicitations monsieur, très belle interprétation ! j'entends la pluie ruisseler sur les carreaux, je m'endormirais bien avec ce type de mélodie. Est-ce cela que l'on appelle des arpèges ?
It does lack a bit from the bass note that would be played by the LH 5th finger
i Play marimba to and i have to Play this at the school orchestra but mine notes ar esier
Hey I've been a fan of yours for a couple of years now, and I was wondering what happened to your recording of Virginia Tate? I really loved your take on it.
amazing job!... which microphones are you using? the recording is so clear!
Wow! Can you do that blindfolded too?
