  • San Bruno Mountain was the first Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) and was cited by Congress when the ESA was renewed in 1983. It is a nature preserve in the middle of a urban development, with 4 endemic species. The author has just published a book, San Bruno Mountain: A Guide to the Flora and Fauna (www.heydaybooks.com/catalog/s.... David talks about the history of how the HCP was created and the native plants of the Mountain.
David Nelson is an amateur botanist on the weekends, but on weekdays he is an orthopedic hand surgeon in Marin. He previously edited three books on fly fishing patterns and served as the Chair of the Board of Governors for Fly Tying. He and Doug Allshouse worked for 10 years to produce the 500 page book on San Bruno Mountain. The book is unusual in having a photo of the flower, the leaf, whole plant, and any unusual aspect of the plant. He is an outdoor enthusiast, has been a commercial raft guide, taught kayaking at San Jose State, and climbed El Capitan when he was 51.
