My name is Jim, I was eight years old in 1960, now 70 years old. Just want to say how much I enjoyed watching this video. Took me back to those early years of my life.
When I got my first real guitar my dad handed me a ventures album and said "if you wanna play guitar learn to play it like these guys!" Thanks Dad!

I used to play Walk Dont Run every time I went into a place that had a juke box. Now I play guitar but suck at that awesome song. ☹️
EXCELLENT DOCUMENTARY. The Ventures are still the GREATEST INSTRUMENTAL BAND of all time !!! The SAD part is as of January 22, 2022 all of the members of this great band are now officially DECEASED. Mel Taylor originally from Brownsville in Brooklyn NY, and is still considered the fastest drummer alive died back in 1996 of a brain tumor and cancer at the young age of 62. Bob Bogle died back in 2009 at 75, and Nokie Edwards passed away in 2018 at 82, Gerry McGee died in 2019 in Japan from a massive and sudden heart attack also at age 82, while performing on stage, playing his Fender guitar with Don Wilson, and finally the founder of the ventures Don Wilson passed away on January 22, 2022 at home in his sleep of natural causes at the age of 88. And so it goes, no Ventures members exist anymore. RIP "The Ventures" 1958-2022 and they've earned their keeps, and their instrumental guitar music playing will LIVE-ON FOREVER. Have a Happy Holidays for 2022 to everyone.

But their music lives on with new guys in the band, and more power to ‘em! The Duke Ellington Orchestra kept going after Duke himself passed on, so why not the Ventures?
Also, let's not forget the great Johnny Smith, who wrote "Walk, Don't Run". Passed away in 2013 at the age of 90.

7 years old, 1968. Dad brought home The Guitar Genius of the Ventures. I was mesmerized! I, and my neighborhood pals , made cardboard "replicas" of the guitars on the cover. We invited parents and friends over to our basement for a "concert" Set my life course! I've been in the music business 46 years as a player and live/recording engineer. I draw a straight line back to that album!

I’m the exact same age and had a somewhat similar experience except my brother who was 7 years older (14) and learning the drums crammed my virgin ears with many Ventures and a guy named Dwayne Eddy and his twangy guitar plus many more electric guitar bands records.
I had a 3 album special release of the Ventures playing all instrumentals they could muster plus their own songs and re-recorded them and they sound fantastic.
The album was released in 2000 or so but separately I think, but could have been a 3 album release

Living in Colorado back in the 70s I stumbled into to a guitar shop, I was plucking on a Ventures song, Walk Don't Run... from behind the counter out pops Johnny Smith the man who wrote the song Walk Don't Run! He took the guitar from my hands and said this it how it goes..... he did his jazz version, which I didn't take my eyes off his hands..... true story.... he was a very cool 😎 and humble individual. I've since drove through Colorado and the music store is long gone?... Thanks Johnny 😊 ........
Grew up in Hawaii,heard the Ventures,bought a Fiesta Red Strat in 1962,still have it am 76 years old and happier than a pig in shit! Thank you for making my life so much richer.
We would hang out at a little music store in 62, where they let us play the guitars. Always remember the strat with the massive price of $315. Unfathomable at the time.
In 2019, I was having some work done on my house and I took the crew to lunch. The CD in my car was playing. They all asked what is that music, its great - I proudly said - The Ventures.
Today is January the 8th 2023, and I love and still listen to the Ventures... 50 year since I first heard them. In Japan, they are still loved by many...

They were and still are my guitar heroes. I’m 70yrs old and still playing them out. After my guitar lesson I would go home and tune my my acoustic guitar to the Ventures pitch and my 2nd guitar lesson would begin. I’d have to pick up the needle on my record player a million times over and over but I got it. Dad finally bought me a Gretsch Corvette electric and small amp. I was in Heaven. I got in a band real early and never stopped or looked back. Some advice to young guitarists listen real hard to the Ventures and everything will fall in place, but you’ll have to work at it. They’re some of the best guitarists ever
I'm a Baby-Boomer and, at one time owned 19 LPs by The Ventures! My favorite ever song by them was The Twilight Zone. Oh the memories!!!
Thanks for being there. Before the Beatles, Beach Boys, or the Stones, the Ventures were there with amazing guitar playing and brilliant songs. They were truly the pioneers of their day.

The Beatles opened the door for writing,and singing songs to people that in many cases played guitar already because of the Ventures. It cannot be overstated how influential the Ventures were in the history of the electric guitar. Long live Don Wilson …
I really appreciate the Ventures, they were a great band with great guitar players: Bob Bogel, Nokie Edwards, Gerry McGee and Don Wilson. And what you write about the impact on young people learning to play the guitar is correct. But this applies primarily to the USA and Canada. In Europe it was more the Shadows, especially their lead guitarist Hank Marvin with his fiesta red Strat. The Shadows' first big hit was "Apache", released in 1960. A fantastic recording, best sound! After that, a lot of guys wanted to play guitar and if they could afford it, a fiesta red Stratocaster. Even great guitarists like Peter Green, Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler and many more have said in interviews that Hank Marvin and the Shadows were among their first influences. 🎸
I had a live, near note perfect WALK DON'T RUN from 1960 BBC by The Shadows! So they paid their respects to The VENTURES too.

My uncle played guitar in California, probably in the late 60s/early 70s. I asked him in the late 80s what songs he could play, and he said the bands he was in played a lot of Ventures. At the time, I scoffed at it. But I'll be damned if, later in my life, when I decided to try to learn some lead playing (I'm a bass player and I play a little rhythm guitar), I didn't go to Walk Don't Run and Dick Dale's stuff because a) the sound was actually important to country as much as rock, and b) as a singer as well, I wanted to focus on the guitar part, and if I tried to learn anything else, I'd focus on the lyrics instead.
@surfinwax58 wilson why wasn't Dick Dale acknowledged?...he was once one of the influential pioneers, of surf rock guitar.
The only fan club I ever joined, The Ventures. Joined in 1969 after three of my high school buddies and I formed a little band we called The Uncaged. I was lead singer and rhythm guitar, but played lead on Pipeline!
Got all autographs when they stopped in Anchorage Alaska on their way back from Japan about 1974. Saw Nokie again at our Palmer State Fair and had him autograph 3 cd’s of his two years before he past away.

The Ventures The Beatles and Santana three groups that dominated my youth and at 73 i still put on my headphones and play along on my drums to all the songs that i did back than, what a rush when i thought i had mastered Wipe Out ha ha well at least in my mind.

Yes they have influenced all guitarists that i have listened to for my whole life. There is no way we can repay there generosity humility and professionalism. The Ventures were my fathers favorite band, he passed away in 2017 we played "Sleepwalk" at his funeral.

I studied with Johnny Hiland in Nashville years ago , stood next to Nokie Edwards on the bar floor watching Mr. Hiland in concert , asked Nokie for an autograph, which he obliged with a smile. wow i really didn;t realize the giant he (Nokie) was!, played guitar approximations of "The Ventures" when I started like the rest of you .... a brush with greatness i cherish now, autograph, his business card, a handshake, a memory

I spent my teen years living in Redlands, CA., I'm 73 now and can still play a few of The Ventures songs on my guitar. Great band.
In the 80s I had the pleasure of working with a promotion company named Pacific Productions in San Luis Obispo. We hosted The Ventures multiple times. I was on the board of directors and the official photographer. Mel Taylor came over to my house, with the president of the company, Bill Fulkerson. One of my favorite memories

I learned how to play guitar by listening to these guys and CCR. This was in the 80's, when shred was king, at that. In 1995, when I graduated Air Force boot camp in San Antonio, the first thing I bought was a Ventures greatest hits cassette at the mall, downtown. I was honored to be able to send Don Wilson a birthday card for his 86th birthday....that is one memory that I'll always treasure. Have loved them throughout the years, and always will.

My brother got tickets to see them on maybe their last American tour in the late nineties. It was at a small venue in Detroit. A couple of college bands warmed up for them and they were thrilled just to do that. We were about thirty feet from the stage and it was hands down the best show I've ever been to. Glad I got to share that with my dad and brother. It was awesome!

I now remember how much I loved this music as a kid. Years later I started on guitar, and still play today at 68. We have a little amateur jam band that plays in our spare bedroom. Fun!

When i was a kid with my parents in some old bar, i always put my coins into the jukebox and played "Wipeout" and other Ventures songs over and over.
200 albums I knew they had a lot of albums but holy shit also the ventures are rock and rolls humble heroes

I got to see the Ventures headline a street fair concert in 1986 in Salem, Oregon. They played with Paul Revere and the Raiders and the Kingsmen. I was on my way to boot camp.
I knew about all three of the bands, as my folks had given me several cassettes, and I had made copies of The Ventures albums I had borrowed from the local library. One could say I was very much influenced by The Ventures, and that I have been playing guitar for over 40 years.
So, much thanks to The Ventures for the enjoyable music over the years, and thanks to y'all for putting together this documentary. Well done!

My friend was a drummer in Vancouver WA in 1966. I used to sit in his living room and listen to him play his drums along with Ventures albums. He really dug the Ventures and playing along with them. How many other musicians got started learning and playing along with Ventures albums? Must be millions. Such an influential group.

my dad played guitar when he was growing up and he had several Ventures records in his collection. when I was a kid growing up, every saturday evening after supper, he would jam on his guitar until it was our bed-time. he would play a mix of old country, old folk, and modern rock and roll tunes. he liked the Ventures because he never had to worry about singing off-key. the one thing I REALLY like about this documentary is how ALL these old masters take the time to explain the terminology and techniques that these guys used and pioneered. I just never realized before, just how many other artists these guys influenced and inspired. wow. just, wow.
The music of the Ventures was such an important part of my childhood. Their albums sound as good today as they ever did. They were pioneers and their music will last foever. R.I.P.

The Ventures came to Toledo,Ohio and played at raceway lounge and I was awed with chills running through my whole body.
The first live electric guitar music i ever heard was some kid in our suburb playing walk don't run echoing through the neighborhood and me franticly riding my bicycle to find its source. The first record I ever bought with my allowance was the Ventures.
The Ventures was the only group I had records of for a while and I listened to CCR and that was about it. Both the Ventures and CCR had a style that no one else had and that is what I liked about them. I remember riding in my brothers blue 66 chevelle listening to the Ventures on an 8 track player. Later on I got my own red 66 chevelle SS and listened to the Ventures in my own car.
RIP, Ventures! Best band ever, don't believe me, check out their library of music.
Not RIP...sort of. I saw the Ventures about 4 years ago at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. Sure, none of the originals were in the band, for obvious reasons, but the guys who were onstage were flying the Ventures flag proudly. If you are at all interested in their music, stay on the lookout for an appearance in your area. "The Ventures," regardless of their current composition, are still touring.

The Ventures performed in our high school gym (Van Nuys High School), circa 1965, in the middle of the school day. $0.50 per ticket and they played of course….WALK DON’t RUN. They were GREAT!
My special thanks to founding member Mr Don Wilson for making it all happen. If it wasn't for him the Ventures would have never existed. They were the greatest thing to have happened since the birth of Rock and Roll. People can say what they want to say but as far as I'm concerned they had talent that was irreplaceable. No sir there will NEVER be anyone else like them. By the way Don GOD REST YOUR SOUL!
I was a tuba player in high school but got Valley Fever, a lung infection. I couldn’t play horn so I bought guitar and learned some Ventures and Dick Dale. We lived next to retirement home and they started complaining. I did learn Walk Don’t Run. Eventually took up bass guitar and got back on tuba. It kept my interest in music alive and became very good tuba player.

The Ventures created such an impact in my, and others' futures. Bought my first Ventures album in 1968 - the very same afternoon I purchased my first skateboard. Few years later I began what would be a lifetime of longboarding (surfing) taking me around the world.
Wherever I went, Ventures music was always there with me.

I saw a guitarist on 10th St. (Tacoma) ... at 8 yrs. old at #3 (I was #10) across the way.
Pine Crest ... Don Wilson... One "Ventures" went right above me... and he taught me a guitarist ! "Walk - Don't Run"... "Yes !" ... he said ! ;-)
My folks bought my brother a drum set, and a guitar for me in about 1966. We were Ventures fanatics, and I bought the "Play Guitar With the Ventures" albums, and we learned 'Walk - Don't Run", "Pipeline", "Wipe Out", and other early guitar band songs from them. "Diamond Head" was KILLER for us. Adding some friends on 2nd guitar and bass, we were off and ... hobbling, but learning enough to play a few gigs as "Our Mother's Equipment" up in Minneapolis. Brother Den and I played together for 9 more years, as we 'progressed' into a progressive cover band, culminating in Zed (with a teenage Yanni on keyboards) BUT - "Walk - Don't Run" and "Pipeline" were ALways in the repertoire. I learned SO much from Don Wilson, adding percussive rhythm to any arrangement we did.
Great to see my pal Danny Amis, of Los Straitjackets, in this documentary. He's a hero of mine, having done what I only allowed myself to fantasize about.
I do think Duane Eddy should have been recognized as another influential player in early guitar instrumental records.
The original cuts on The Ventures' "...In Space", "Play the Batman Theme", "Super Psychedelics", etc, are phenomenal atmospheric and inventive songs and arrangements. They still move me right off the planet - They deserve so much more attention than they've received.

I saw them play NAMM in the early 2000s. They played in front of maybe 150 of us. Nokie went to different vendors & played his amazing rockabilly/western swing/country /surf style on different guitars. I was in heaven

Indeed, world ambassadors of music! This is a very special documentary! Thank you! As a kid born in the PNW in 1950, Renton, they were one of my first big inspirations to pick up the guitar in the early 1960s. I'd say that the 2 top bands that truly influenced me back then were The Ventures and then The Beatles. I have a special infinity to these guys. They made the dream real and possible for us local boys. They put the Northwest on the map! I think, as I remember it today, I heard them first on KJR with Pat O'Day. Again, a great tribute and thanks for sharing it here!

These men are revolutionaries of early instrumental surf Rock n Roll. So are Dick Dale and the Del Tones. Both are still shinning bright here in 2023.
1979 I was in the 5th grade. As the last day of school neared we got up the nerve to ask our stern, no nonsense principal Mr. Paylor if our band could play in the gymnasium on the last day. To our surprise he said yes! Our "go to" song was Wipe Out. I'll never forget the smile Mr. Paylor gave us when our drummer launched into the driving solo. I memory I cherish to this day. Thanks to The Ventures.

I normally don't watch vids longer than 20-30 minutes, but this one was special. Great historical background and all the wonderful tributes by musicians from the 60s until present day. That says something! Great guys. I'm 75 and remember songs from the 50s (transitional era to rock and roll) and had my small record player and a stack of 45 RPM records. It was in my parents' basement and I had the volume always maxed out of the small speaker. LOL
It was a time of high school dances, movies (balcony seating, of course), and the first steady girlfriend until I enlisted in the Air Force in Nov 1965. Shipped out to Vietnam in 1968 and things took a different, dark tone both physically and musically. Now I'm a Bionic Boomer with two hip transplants and open-heart bypass surgery last year. I hope the young people listen to some good music for their generation as it normally provides a marker for special episodes in your life.

Been a HUGE fan of theirs since the 1960s! This has got to be among the greatest rock documentaries I've ever seen! Met all the principles except Nokie, and WHAT GREAT GROUP OF GUYS! Even met Don's MOM! Even got to tell Mel Taylor that he was among the main reasons why I became a drummer in the first place! We've since lost most of them but I'm stoked that the late, great, Don Wilson was pleased to see the group live on after them! SO COOL!
I learned how to replay the bass guitar thanks to the Ventures- these duded were completely instrumental and they did look like someone's dad playing up on stage, but their sound was distinct and was easy to listen too.
You guys were innovative beyond what You could fathom. Rock and Roll won’t be the same down here. But I’ll listen every time I hear the roll of thunder and think of You! REST IN PEACE!
I obsessed over The Ventures' albums in the '60s, and to this day I can recognize their influence in the music I create. While at times it seemed like the music-buying public was ignoring them, guitar players were paying close attention. It does my heart a world of good to see folks like Skunk Baxter and Jimmy Page acknowledge the importance of a band whose influence on guitar music is incalculable.

What I want..is for these guys to release a MASSIVE box set on CD.....there's a couple of good compilation CD's....but that's about it.
I feel so lucky and had the privilege of meeting and talking with Don and Nokie. They performed twice at our local casino show lounge here in Regina, Saskatchewan on their 50th anniversary tour. Having been born in 1955 I grew up listening and enjoying the Ventures.

I'm 114yrs old, died in '67 but still play a Fender, thanks for putting the documentary together, I bought their first mofoing single on 78, and I still surf.....

Thank you so much for this amazing documentary of the very first band I heard and bought the album , The Ventures.
Their sound’s still reverberates to this day. Bless their families who are still with us and thank you for sharing that with us all
Got to see the Ventures in the early 90's at the Palomino ..... So fun !!! My friend who was with me leaned over in the middle of their set and said "These guys are like the Teamsters of rock" ..... I laughed as they really looked just like teamsters ...... A few weeks later I was working on a Van Halen video and was wearing my Ventures t-shirt that I had bought at the show . I was adjusting something and was standing next to Eddie Van Halen and he says "wow , Ventures" and starts to play Walk Don't run on his guitar ...... Very Cool !!!!!
I wonder how many places in the country have a club called the Palomino ? I'm from the L.A. area so I know where I imagine it to be but , I'll bet Texas and Oklahoma have a dozen each.
There was a song from the '70s called "Rock N Roll Heaven" with the line: "If there's a rock n roll heaven, I know they have a hell of a band!" This came out shortly after Elvis died, but applies to Eddie (RIP) and the Ventures. When I die, I'm going to the club where they're at!
The Ventures will always have that special place in my heart - going back as a boy in the early 60s, right before the Beatles blew the door down with the first of the British Invasion - realizing later how much they too loved the Ventures!
As with many, the Ventures sound gave me that urge to also want to play guitar, which never really panned out that well, but I tried. Their music is universally loved and upon watching this documentary, I couldnt help but feel melancholic as one does when it's realized how the time has passed from youthful exuberance to thoughtful reprise.

Earlier in the video, reference was made to the tune "Wipe Out". Anyone who knows even a small amount of instrumental music history would know that "Wipe Out" was an original hit for *The Surfaris!*
Starting in 1955 my father played guitar in the Page Cavanaugh Trio. I even have a concert poster for an engagement they did at a hotel lounge in Long Beach, CA. I'm happy to say I have my father's 1952 Gibson ES-175 guitar he play with the trio and beyond. Additionally I bought some Ventures memorabilia from the estate of drummer Mel Taylor including a gold record award for "The Ventures Play Telstar/The Lonely Bull & Others".

Yep...I was probably about nine or ten when I first heard the sound in the mid sixty's ...I was captivated...then and still my favorite.....the music has energy that is boundless and timeless..

I'VE BEEN THERE WITH THEIR MUSIC SINCE THEY CUT THEIR FIRST SINGLE. THEY WERE AND ARE PHENOMENAL AND WILL LIVE FOREVER, EVERYWHERE ON THIS PLANET. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF THEM THEIR FAMILIES AND TO EVERYONE IN THIS WORLD. GOD BLESS!!!!!

I hope their families know their music is STILL inspiring kids to pick up guitars to this day. Walk Don't Run was one of the first songs I learned to play back in 2004. Ventures in space was great when I found out about pot lol.
Excellent documentary. The Ventures were one of a kind. I wish they could still be playing.
At 72 I still have my Ventures vinyl. Great documentary. Well worth the time to watch. Great commentary by many icon musicians. Thanks for making this musical docu history episode.

Growing up as a teenager I bought all of their albums as soon as they came out. It was the Ventures and Beatles that ignited my passion for playing guitar. They are now playing in Rock and Roll heaven. R I P
I wish they would have layered in the other bands like Dick Dale, Beach Boys etc to set a timeline of when the surf sound developed, I still have my "Learn to play the guitar" by the Ventures, the cover is long gone but have the 33, have a cherry read Mex Strat and Marshall amp, brings me great joy to turn up the the amp, only goes to 10 but in my head it's 11.
Their talent spoke loudly, but their humility and class were deafening. Legend is really too small a word for the guys. As a drummer, I watched Mel a lot, and when I bought a guitar, it was their tabs that I sought out. It's been a year since the last original member, Don, has passed on and I think I play their albums more than ever. R.I.P. gentleman.
I am one half hour into this film and it is excellent. The Ventures sound influenced just about every famous guitarist who came after them.
My dad was a fan and The Ventures were my first approximation to Rock N’ Roll. I absolutely loved this documentary!
