tails has been a playable character in one of the older smash games and he somehow almost got banned from certain events for being too op, I wish they added him in smash ultimate.
Well if you want to get technical, Roy is a technically a smash original cause he was shown off in Smash melee before his game even came out a few months later.
Actually, the first indie series in smash goes as far as n64, the game the character comes from is so indie that it hasn't appeared anymore since the devs can't make more games about it. The character in question being Captain Falcon.
I'd be surprised if someone heard that it wasn't a character in the base game and then immediately started guessing dlc characters. I'd also be incredibly disappointed in humanity as a whole.

Even though Ness is from a Nintendo game, a lot of indie JRPG games were actually inspired by Earthbound (including Undertale).
