If the female flowers of cucumbers, pumpkins, and courgettes are not pollinated, the flower and unfertilized fruit drop off. So you have only had one female flower on your pumpkin plant that has been fertilized.
Yep! For some reason my zucchini plants have stopped putting on male flowers so the fruit is dying. Planted another one and will hopefully get at least a few more.
Leave the largest runner beans on the plant when they turn brown and dry out you can use the seeds for next years crops. Hope your feeling better soon Emma
Lettuce - try freezing older lettuce - the chinese cook it in stirfries. ! Also chard which is older. Stirfry both with garlic - curry powder, herbs ect.
Hi Emma what a time to get covid, we went to Tenerife at Christmas to celebrate my birthday & new year, we left 23rd December & I too caught covid on 27th the day before my birthday, definitely the plane, take it easy. I also save some of my runner bean seeds for next year if they get too big 👍
Have you thought about getting a solar powered wildlife camera so you can see who is really up to mischief in your allotment? I got one for my garden recently so I can monitor the hedgehog family who live here ❤
Get well soon. As long as the beans will snap when you bend them, they will be just fine to eat the whole bean. Let's celebrate our victories. Enjoy your channel. Keep the vids coming. Looked like poor pollination on the pumpkins. Might want to hand pollinate in the future.
Oh Emma so sorry your lovely holiday ended in COVID! Hope you feel better soon me lovely x August isn’t a good month to leave your plot but when is? I’ve been plagued with a bad back since mid July and now am recovering from surgery. It’s a shame when you’ve worked so hard but hey ho at least the veggies are at a point where they should be able to hold their own a bit. Sad the badgers or fox has decimated your sweetcorn hopefully you’ll still get a harvest x
You still look bronzed though Emma, so not all is lost! I too have had a Sweetcorn disaster this year. I’ve never succeeded with it. The. Again, 60% of what I grow fails so no surprise there!
Pumpkins are hungry plant. It's either plant food or water or both that it is missing and then all the baby-pumpkins are rotting down. If you water them frequently and give a tomato food regularly then it should come back and give more pumpkins. And the same for sweetcorn. They also love a good feed and water. And by the way I've seen a cat sleeping on my sweetcorn. It could be Rocky...
Also could be poor pollination. But yourebquite right about feed and water, also weather conditions. pumpkins and squashes know how many fruits they can support and 'abort' any that they can't. They are clever plants.
What a shame about that corn. Hope you still get a harvest from the remaining one. I wonder if the foxes were pushing them down to see if there were cobs ready to eat?
It’s another sign that we don’t have enough pollinators 😢 if the pumpkin flower isn’t pollinated male to female then they’ll rot and die, so may have to hand pollinate next time
Feel better soon Emma. We went to Austria last February and caught covid from the guy sitting next to us on the plane! In June we went to Corfu and luckily came back with nothing but a suntan and lots of wonderful memories. My plot has had failures and I've been here!!!
Glad you had a lovely holiday but sorry you are not well now. The first two years at our allotment we grew sweetcorn and deer got in and ate lots and trampled over the plants, We now grow the baby corn which does very well. Loving my cool job waterproof gloves btw. Hope you feel better very soon.
Learnt it the hard way I find that long scissors like the one you are using can lead to more accidents in terms of ending up cutting through adjacent structures branches flowers etc compared to secateurs or any cutting device which uses the very tip to cut things, if you know what I mean. My worse accident was cutting through the main stem of. the tomato plant accidentally while cutting through the string holding it
Hope you're feeling much better soon, Emma. Shame about the sweetcorn damage. The plot doesn't look too bad, considering it's been a couple of weeks. Take care
Hi Emma, nice to see you back. My daughter and her little family were on hols in Spain 2 weeks ago and came back with covid. Hope you get better very soon. ❤
Shame about the sweetcorn, I noticed the foxes like sitting in my sweetcorn bed a couple of months ago and since then I put a load of short canes dotted around in the bed to deter them going in there and has seemed to work. So maybe try that for next time.
🎃The pumpkins which rotted, weren’t pollinated. Usually you need to hand-pollinate pumpkins as we no longer have enough pollinating insects to rely on them doing it! 🎃
Is that just in the UK because my garden has been full of bees and butterflies all summer. However, my zucchini stopped putting on male flowers for some reason.
@@kimberlyearly8918uk pollinaters are very lacking this year. With regards to your lack of male zucchini flowers, you can pollinate any squash (summer or winter) with any other variety of squash pollen, just don't use the seeds to grow next year.
I read that Greece was having a surge of covid so you probably caught it there. I have long covid since sept 2002 so I have to be careful with overdoing things and I get a positive result every couple of months so I thing I’m susceptible to it now.
I think the pumpkins that rotted were some that didn't get pollinated? If you've not seen may pollinators there (I've seen a sharp decline here in Arkansas, USA) you might want to try hand pollinating. 😔
@@clarefoskett9959 I have had more pollinators in thea past 2 weeks than i had from Spring til then. The weather was too cold, wet and windy for the flying insects to thrive. Looking much better now and I hope your area has now picked up. Barry from No dig norafolk gardener seems to have plenty of pollinators now.
@@bewoodford2807 We have bumbles but zero honey bees here, all around us are saying the same. Worrying tbh. I spoke to Norfolk Beekeepers, they said it would improve. We haven't seen any yet.....
Just picked up honey from my local honey farmer...5 hives and 300 jars of honey so they haven't had a bad year here in South Wales...but yes only seen an increase in insects in the last few weeks😕
You need to hand pollinate pumpkins as we no longer have enough pollinating insects to rely on them to do it. You need to be out early every morning to catch a male flower and a female flower open at the same time. There’s videos on CZcams showing you how to do it!
It’s adorable you think there’s a spider season, Emma. I’m pretty sure spiders exist year-round, at least in most places. Do you think spider season is around Halloween?

I was about to say the same thing
Indeed, I had to hand pollinate my courgettes this year as they were all dying on me!

Lack of pollination for the pumpkins
The females always have a small fruit, but if they don't get pollinated they just drop off like a dead flower.
Have you thought about getting a solar powered wildlife camera so you can see who is really up to mischief in your allotment?
I got one for my garden recently so I can monitor the hedgehog family who live here ❤
The sweet corn could have been wind damaged. Here in North London we had high winds that devastated my tomatoes.

Pumpkins can also suffer from blossom end rot, which is what it looks like. Application of lime or gypsum and regular consistent watering. 👍

I think the pumpkins that rotted are just pumpkins that did not get pollinated. I could be wrong, but I do believe that is what it is.
Sweetcorn damage is from badgers. Make some sort of fence with some netting and that will protect whats left.
Could also be rats. I watch the veg plot man on CZcams and he had the exact same and was due to rats.
We only got 3 butternuts this year from 6 plants due to the lack of bees in the garden this year, I did not see any bees until mid august
yay youre back!
