In every single Mario and Sonic crossover game, the two have always been stuck in two categories. Mario is the generalist. He's the guy you depend on when you just want a good time and nothing more. His playstyle in most games revolves around boots-to-the-ground functions and dependable game knowledge to rely on. Sonic, though, is more of a specialist comparatively. If he's not using his speed, then he's got some kind of a miscellaneous gimmick that ties his whole playstyle together, whether it be some big fuck-off move, a different meter system, or just modified stats in general. This, in my opinion, perfectly captures the nineties' rivalry between Jump and Speed.
The fact that they started arguing with each other before later on just putting their differences aside and becoming friends is such a good ending I love this song bro
