  • I hand you my ball and chain
You just hand me that same old refrain
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
    And I'm falling
I wish I could please you tonight
But my medicine just won't come right
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
    And I'm falling
    Too many steps to take
    Too many spells to break
    Too many nights awake
    And no one else
    This grindstone's wearing me
    Your claws are tearing me
    Don't use me endlessly
It's too long, too long to myself
Where's the justice and where's the sense?
When all the pain is on my side of the fence
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
    And I'm falling
    Too many steps to take
    Too many spells to break
    Too many nights awake
    And no one else
    This grindstone's wearing me
    Your claws are tearing me
    Don't use me endlessly
It's too long, it's too long to myself
It scares you when you don't know
Whichever way the wind might blow
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
    And I'm falling
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
    And I'm falling
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
    And I'm falling

Linda and Richard were just so freaking good together on stage.I was incredibly fortunate to have seen them together when this record came out in 83' or early 84' This song was always my wife's favorite, I kinda favored the title track and Wall of Death, all in all one of the greatest records of all time.

It's almost unbearable to watch Linda singing this song when you know what was happening between her and Richard when the tour took place. Simon Nicol once said that it seemed like he spent their marriage writing songs for her to sing when he left her and this the message of this harrowing vieo. It's compelling but so painful.

Yes, I saw that last R&L Thompson show at the Dominion Tot Ct Rd London in 81, where she told him on stage to get rid of the Martin Guitar and get a nice Ovation, just to annoy him, obviously.

i had seen them on this tour at ripleys on south street in philadelphia. a fantastic cozy music club where you were practically inches from the stage. most of us in the audience that night were aware of their marriage's state of affairs which had boiled into public disgust with one another. what maybe one of the best songs richard ever composed, "walking on a wire", was to be sung by linda with the warm and fuzzy lines "I hand you my ball and chain,You just hand me that same old refrain. I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire. And I'm falling" it was one of the must hear songs from the album but expecting and worse demanding that they perform it was like pouring kerosene on the fire. while fleetwood mac's "go your own way" had the same vibe and backstory, i don't think stevie nicks and lindsay buckingham ever got as public in their break up as linda and richard. it was like not taking your eyes away from a violent car wreck, prurient fan interest where no fan should have such a right, its not something that i listen to with the same glee when i first spun it on my turntable 40-years ago.

Rock and Roll was never meant to be this gut-wrenchingly real. Linda's mental turmoil is all too clear and the audience must have felt uncomfortable to be witnessing it.

Glad to see they have laid those times behind them. Richard (who broke the marriage) played on Linda solo album several years ago. They broke up at the same time as my parents did. If Richard and Linda behaved like my parents, they did good.

    WALKING ON A WIRE:
