  • Mako begins to prepare his old Sumi ink on Suzuri stone for Psalm 22 painting, a collaboration with Dr. Ellen Davis at Duke University on their Psalms project. He speaks of Sumi ink as compressed ash (pine soot) mixed with Nikawa glue, made into a beautiful stick, as an emblem for our time.

I once heard a sermon that contemplated Psalms 22, 23, and 24 as the story of Jesus' death (22), rest in the tomb (23), and triumphal reentry into heaven (24). It was so powerful that I've never been able to think of those psalms separately again. Your work and your words are changing my life as an artist. Arigato!
