  • "Aytee GSP's German Shorthaired Pointer "Jerzi has progressed from Novice to Open Class in Field Trials, but still needs close management on shoot days to give her the best training opportunities, as she is still relatively young and inexperienced. The video is intended to help anyone who wants to work their dog on shoot days but also be successful in field trials.

    Lucie hi
    I love your videos..I love and own a GSP
    I cant get her to sit and stay and wait...yes maybe I am not a perfect handler but as much as I try.
    She is a great retriever and proved it at the duck opening in Victoria Australia last month
    I had her on a lead though tied to a tree otherwise she would be all over the place....they are highly strung I believe.
    Well done with your dogs...great viewing

    Excellent video Lucie - We have two GSPs, they were rescues so not really fit for hunting. We've had Tessy a year - she was in a bad state but has come on so much. I take them up the hills through the woods etc. for lovely walks. Beautiful temperament but need the exercise and stimulation...

      +Sal Saia
      Hi Sal, Train with other people and their dogs and make sure that your dog gets completely used to sitting calmly and watching another work. Only allow your gsp to pick about 1 in 10 dummies that it sees thrown. Keep back from the action at a shoot until they can cope with being up close. If you take this approach right from the beginning it is easier for the dog to relax. Good luck !

    • @AyteeGSPs
      @AyteeGSPs  Před 7 lety

      Hi John Thanks. :)
      Use their names if you are working several together and train them to only react if they hear their own name. They all quickly realise that the whistle is only relevant if they are the one working. Interestingly they dont need their own name if I go out with just one dog, just use the whistle as normal.

    How do You do it, I have a Hungarian wire haired vizsla a boisterous German short haired pointer puppy and a Weimaraner the vizsla always runs off and ruins everything and they are not fast learners it seems impossible but this video inspired me and I will train the Weimaraner because she is perfect

    • @AyteeGSPs
      @AyteeGSPs  Před 7 lety

      Now, that is interesting. I have been told that the Viszla is the most intelligent of the HPR breeds, presumably very quick learners (!) so maybe it is just getting the better of You! Seriously, suggest that you give each of your dogs 1to1 time. Then they dont get to watch each other making bad mistakes and you can give them undivided attention and make every lesson worthwhile. Thanks for your post , so glad that Aytee has inspired you :) Enjoy :)

    You truly have mastered obedience. Is the sent on birds different between live and dead birds? Can the dog tell the difference?

    • @AyteeGSPs
      @AyteeGSPs  Před 8 lety

      +jim sanker Hi, thanks. Definately they should track the blood scent of a wounded or dead bird and not point it but bring it straight in. A young dog can easily get confused if it is sweeping an area for birds rather than being on a specific single retrieve. It behaves more as if it is hunting and therefore points, but with a bit of experience they soon get the idea.

    Dear Lucie, I saw at 1:24 that the dogs tremble, is it for adrenalin or for cold?

    • @AyteeGSPs
      @AyteeGSPs  Před 6 lety

      Hi Matteo, In this case it is adrenalin. The dogs are often excited and tense, particularly when they are concentrating hard during the drive, waiting to see birds dropping and have a retrieve. They rarely get cold during a days work.

    • @jesusjessy6960
      @jesusjessy6960 Před 4 lety

      They are dogs. What do you worry if they are cold or not
      You dont understand that they are dogs for hunting and they concentrate for the hunt
      Do you have dogs or you come here only to worry for someone business

    Thank you for sharing with us your training method and congratulation for your work and your beautiful students (beautiful as mine ;) )! Seriously I have a girl which is very much alike, from a French line of GSP.
    Could you please tell us, how you spell your hunting commands in English (or even the associations of your whistle.., only if you have a little time). Are those methods written somewhere?
    Either ways, I thank you again!

    • @AyteeGSPs
      @AyteeGSPs  Před 8 lety

      Hi Sorin, Thanks for those kind remarks, we all love our dogs dont we !
      I am guessing that you mean the search command, which is "Hie Lost" It does seem to carry well and if taught right should encourage the dog to get its nose down and search a small area. The whistle command to accompany this or replace it, is a low and very gentle continuous wavering short then long pip. I've always read as much as I can from different places and picked up tips from lots of different places! Enjoy your dogs !

    • @SorinPetcuStoplaStup
      @SorinPetcuStoplaStup Před 8 lety

      Thank you Lucie. I will excuse myself and send you one more. Do you think that electronic collars, helps in a certain stage?

    • @AyteeGSPs
      @AyteeGSPs  Před 8 lety +2

      I would never advocate their use and have no first hand experience of their effect, but have seen dogs work that have been trained with them. These dogs have in my opinion fallen short. If you have done your correct basic training and taken time and thought when you hit a problem, they will never be necessary. Be clear, be consistent and be firm but above all be kind.

      I thought that. His history is sketchy to say the least. The only hunting he does is chasing pheasants and rabbits on he's walk. He's a wonderful pet.

      GSP are an incredible versatile breed that can point, flush, and retrieve in water and land. They are honestly one of the best gun dogs out there. We use ours to point pheasant, chuckar, and quail but also retrieve ducks in the pond.
