    Seoul is like an Asian New York, that is cleaner and more efficient. That's so interesting about the subway. It must depend on the station. My parents went out at night by themselves on the subway and were fine. Everything was in English was for them.

    • @stilapixie
      @stilapixie Před 5 lety +60

      That's because there IS English signage all over the subway system. Not sure what Lost Leblanc meant, but there is an abundance of English signs and speakers all over Seoul. You just have to look a bit closely sometimes (the English is usually in smaller letters underneath the Korean words). I've been there over 7 times (lost count lol) in the past 8 years and even had no problems using the subway the first very time. I did not really know how to read or speak Korean at that time. Glad your parents found their way around, it is indeed pretty easy. I love that city and would highly recommend English speakers to visit because the city is so accessible to us. By comparison, Tokyo is much more difficult to navigate, especially by subway. Much fewer English signs compared to Korea and virtually nobody spoke English. Unlike in Korea, people's (especially young people's) English are decent, but they may be shy to speak it.

      @@stilapixie Totally agree! When he said the subway system was a nightmare and there was no English and that barely anyone spoke English in Korea, I was like WHAT!? Seoul is probably one of the most convenient cities in Asia for tourists and English speakers to travel. People have to know how to speak English in Korea because it is required for the university entrance exam and most companies require it as well. I live in Korea and I know people who have lived here for years and have never had to learn to speak or read Korean because English is so widely used.

    I would recommed staying near Dongdaemun or Myeogdong instead of Hongdae. Hongdae has great nightlife on the weekends, but it's pretty far from tourist destinations. From Dongdaemun you can technically walk to all of the historical and classic sights and in the other direction you are within walking distance of Myeongdong which feels a little like being in Times Square. Also it's a little cheeper! Gangnam is quite far from everything as well, but if you like the are I recommend staying more near Jamsil because it's really pretty there!

    • @ShaneyHwang
      @ShaneyHwang Před 5 lety +10

      I live in NYC and I'd have to agree! I'm Korean so it was definitely easier for me to navigate the Korean subway system (because I could rely on English and Korean for the directions). On top of that, I had a lot of prior experience with the NYC subway system so I was quite familiar already. However, I really liked how Korea marked all their exits in the subway station! They also mark the exit numbers on the korean map app I used so it was really convenient to find the closest exit. NYC's subway system may have a lot of history but quite frankly it's getting way too old and way too crowded. Korea definitely won the transit battle :') it is a much newer system though so I can understand why NYC falls behind so much.

      The video actually shows the station names in English below the Korean. The signs also show you the direction the train is going. Like any city you need a subway map to understand transfers and the Subway App is awesome - you put in your start and destination and it will give you various options for least transfers, quickest, etc, plus tell you which exit for your destination - all in English. I am a non-korean speaker and have been to Seoul twice and think the subway is the best in the world.

You can have not only traditional Korean foods but also a variety of foreign foods, most of which are localized and still good or better than the original, such as pizza from Mr.Pizza. I know others have said it, but you should have given the subway more of a chance, haha. It IS so easy to use and there's English all over the place so I'm not sure what happened in your case. A ton of people in Korea speak English...to the point that it's difficult to use Korean because they keep speaking English to me -.-. One transportation app that I would recommend is Citymapper. It's in English and is highly convenient. Also, your comment about Hongdae being more expensive than Gangnam made me chuckle a little because Gangnam is THE most expensive place in Korea, it's why Psy sang about it ;) It's understandable why people have a hard time pronouncing Korean words because the way they spell them in English is not how you would actually say it. For example, Hongdae is actually pronounced Hong-day, so you were pretty close. Overall, this was a pretty good, comprehensive video about my favorite city on earth and I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves!

    Hey Lost LeBlanc, I used to teach in South Korea for a few years. A few places that I think are worth visiting are Gyeongju, Busan and Jeju island.
    Gyeongju is a traditional city that has alot of history and beautiful buildings. There are a few places worth visiting in that city, maybe for just a day. Including the king's tombs and bulguksa Temple. You can also learn alot about Korea's history in that city and get a feel for the culture.
    Busan is a vibrate city along the southern coast of south korea. Busan has a few temples, beaches, a fish market and a international market. In particular I would go to haeundae beach and gwangalli beach. The fish market is a few subway stops from Busan station and is called Jagachi market. The international market is 2 blocks away from Jagalchi market.
    Depending on your time frame I would also recommend going to a smaller island off the south of the mainland called Jeju Island. Take a cheap flight from Busan and rent a car on Jeju island. The island has a unique feel to it compared to the mainland and has a lot of farms, seafood restaurants and sites. I hope you go back to South Korea as I believe it is one of the best travel destinations.
    All the best man, I enjoy your content.

    Naver rocks for using in Korea. Also people know how to talk English, but are still too much reserved to risk talking English.
    But the city is really alive all the time. Jong-no area has mostly offices and its quiet after midnight.

    • @stilapixie
      @stilapixie Před 5 lety +9

      @123 123 Totally agree with Dejan Slovic. There were times when I struggled to communicate in Seoul and usually the people (esp the young ones) met me halfway and spoke some English words. Even an elderly Seoul subway janitor told me in English without me asking that I wouldn't be able to transfer onto the next train because the station I was at was the last stop of the night (this was just before midnight). Places like Myeongdong have dedicated English (and other language) tour guides just out on the street to help tourists find their way. Compared to the first time I rode the Seoul subway (at night by myself) without even breaking a sweat, Tokyo's subway is a lot more confusing. And no, I did not know how to read or speak Korean during that first time. If I had to squeeze out an English word in Tokyo out of desperation, everyone just shook their heads/hands "no" or stared blankly. Not to say I haven't gotten a few refusals in Korea, but the overall experience is much better. There is English included on a lot of signs and menus in Seoul, including the subway (which is why I am confused about Lost Leblanc's comment about it being difficult to navigate the Seoul subway). Not at all in Tokyo. In fact, my mom had to help me out by partially reading some of the signs in Tokyo containing Chinese characters. We got into so many arguments because I wasn't prepared and couldn't find our way in many situations. Never had that happen in Seoul.

    • @stilapixie
      @stilapixie Před 5 lety +5

      @123 123 Lol, hope you enjoyed the positive feedback then. ;) I really love Seoul. It's on another level compared to my experience in Tokyo. Perhaps people (especially Westerners) prefer Tokyo because it seems more "exotic" and different/weird. It's more of a spectacle. Seoul definitely has some western influences, which make it more comfortable to stay in for someone from America like me. Also, western people seem to have a better (at least more long-standing) awareness or perceived understanding of Japan, so maybe they prefer it only because it seems more familiar.

    • @stilapixie
      @stilapixie Před 5 lety +5

      @123 123 Exactly. The western world is already getting to know Korean beauty, music, and food. It's only a matter of time before Seoul is seen as the more appealing city to visit.

    Really really cool video. You showed many parts of korea in just 5 days! I stayed in Seoul for 13 month and it was the best time of my life. I tried the same food as you. Once my korean friends took me to a harbor location in incheon at 4 am eating fresh seafood(seasnail, octopus and many fresh stuff). Another time my korean girlfriend took me to a place outside seoul(a bit countryside), where we ate the most healthy food(really tasty). The problem with the restaurants is, that after a short time they disappear sometimes. Koreans treat me extremely helpful. A guy just listened that I had a travel problem and booked a bus ticket, brought me to the bus place and wished me a happy stay in korea...wow! I am german, so I even found koreans who can speak german. Some koreans dont speak a good english, but I learned some basic korean or some use a translater. I miss korea a lot and all the good memories. So I wish you a great second trip and many new lovely experience :))).

    1. The subway system IS super easy to use. There are English signs everywhere, even the stop announcements are in English. There are also apps in English to help.

    I've lived in SK for a while now and never had any problems using the subway and busses. Actually, I was very impressed by how easy to understand and efficient the transportation system is. I highly recommend downloading Naver maps and learning how to read Hangul though. It really is not that hard, since it was designed to be easy to learn. Buying a t-money card, which basically acts as a credit card for transportation and can be used all around the country is another thing that helps you out a lot. They are available in every convenience store. I definitely recommend using public transport over taxis, as the drivers sometimes charge foreigners higher fares (as my friends have told me, I cannot confirm this) or may not take you if you aren't going for a long distance (e.g. one subway stop). Hope everyone who plans to visit Seoul has a great time and gets to love the city as well :)

    And I think this is great video to inform South Korea to foreigner.
    But I feel sad you didn't experience like other funny things in Korea. So I want to inform several things to you or other people who has plan to travel South Korea.
    1. Makgeolli
    : This is Korean traditional rice wine. Nowdays, here in Korea has many various makgeolli like strawberry makgeolli, grape makgeolli etc.. I strongly recommend this wine because you already drank soju and somac. (And makgeolli is my favorite. 😊)
    2. Naver map application
    : This is very useful map and many Korean also use this map. Because it shows you that various paths you can go. And it also informs you that how long it takes and how much you have to pay the fare.
    3. Busan
    : Busan is second city of South Korea. If you want to experience another city, then I strongly recommend 😆 This city has also subway and comfortable traffic. And Busan has also international airport. So you can move from Seoul to Busan by airplane or KTX(train, it takes about 3hours).
    4. Street food
    : Korean has many street food. For example, tteok-bokki, gim bap, sundae etc.. Maybe if you search at google you can see that.

      same, too easy if you've been on subway anywhere else. tho I had a lot of experience with subway in Madrid, Berlin, Paris and I learned basically every JR train on a Japanese map. And I know only 3 words in Korean.

    i had to rechecked when you uploaded this video because I travel solo to Seoul recently (not that long from the date of this video) and the Subway Station has English in all of it. I don't know how you missed it... its very easy that I never went into a wrong subway to go to the location that I wanted...the colors are very very helpful... and I don't speak Korean or read Hangul... other than that... great videos! The subway station is actually one of my favorite thing about Seoul.

    You can always try asking us students about transportation stuff. Most of us will be very happy to help. English is a MUST for students in Korea, and we use the metro and the bus for academies anyways, so yeah.

      This is a very good tip, thank you! How do I recognize if someone is a student? Just ask any young people, and I have good chance that they speak English? What about staff in small shops, or museum staff?

      Actually, almost ninety percent of young people in Korea is student lol and also not only students but most of Koreans can speak English well! There'll be no problem to communicate with them :) At least four of five could help you with their eng lol

      Anke Br Anke Br if you really want to recognize a student, you could look for big backpacks or bags in general. Or you could look for school uniforms, or if they are walking in groups, etc. but yeah, many people in korea speak english basically, to a certain extent. Of course you can't expect a lot english from an elder group of Koreans. The reason i told you to ask students, was because English is a MUST for them. If you have a hard time trying to find a person who speaks english, i say, try to find students.
      And if you go to places with a lot of foreigners, like Hongdae or Myeongdong, most shop staffs are educated to use basic foreign languages, so yeah. Shop staffs are also a great idea.
