my back surgery was the biggest mistake I ever made.. loss 75 percent of my left leg.. pain is worse.. etc etc..it does work for some people..God bless..I found out who my true friends family are...Amen...
Who was your doctor?
I agree the surgery didn't work I had six fusion surgeries and my bones wouldn't grow back so I have artificial disc and bones I hurt so bad especially when it's cold are raining I have to have a neck surgery and another back surgery but I'm not having it because my legs and arms hurt so bad now and this is my first neck surgery and the way I feel now ain't no way I'll get another surgery
Dr Nichols arredondo and Dr sofoneones I know I didn't spell them right one at Savannah spine institute and Chatham orthopedic in Savannah Georgia
I don’t think you realize how painful this is man !
I also made the biggest mistake of my life. I went for a rhizotomy and ended up being semi paralyzed. I lost most of my friends and even my family. Live gets very hard. I struggle to do basic tasks. My family is of the opinion that I must exercise myself better.
I'm a doctor undergoing physician training and i cant tell you how great these videos are. The simplicity of the videos makes complicated pathologies so easy to understand. I feel like spinal disease is something that is generally taught poorly. Would love to see a series directed towards doctors you're an amazing teacher!!
Thanks for sharing this video!
These vids are so good. Your 3 part series of spine pathologies are clutch.
love the way you explain things. Thank you so much
Excellent video! Thank you for explaining on a patient level.
Thank you very much Dr. that was really helpful video.
Great explanation
Clear video thank you 😊
Thanks you are awesome!!!!
Very informative!
Outstanding clip. I have a Schmorl’s Node at L4-L5. I’ve had success with PT but hopeful that over the next 7 to 10yrs my L5 will bone will regenerate and push that node back up
Thank you. Very well explained. From Durban South Africa

good data DOC
Perhaps a video explaining the options of thoracic back pain & available treatments would be so helpful. Thank you
I will put that on the list.
I'm 32 and I was diagnosed last year with DDD. A year after physical therapy and I still experience back pains
same 😢i’m 36
Bad back pain is limiting to my life in every way. Medial branch block this coming week and all my hope is pinned on that. 🙏

I wish I had come across this video long ago, my situation wouldn't have been worse as it is today
tqsm Dr...very detail explanation. I had DDD at lumbar and cervical, the pain come on off.
V v informative
Thank you for explaining this I think this is what I have accompanied with Tronchantric bilateral bursitis. Thank you for explaining these in terms WE non doctors can understand. You are very informal and I will be talking to my doctors about my x rays next week to hopefully claim that this is what’s wrong with my lower back dimple and buttocks area in my lower spine and sacral.
Thank you!
Turns out this is indeed what’s going on with me.
Thank you for your videos very helpful and very very knowledgeable to help with self help information when it comes to outlining your symptoms and or conditions.
Do an MRI. X Rays can’t see bones.
I started with being rear ended on a motorcycle. 2 years later a pain pump then steroid injection over 17 years. After facet pain then constant muscle pain I find out in an X-ray scoliosis. Flare ups feeling hot I started taking Turmeric and Quercitin and after a month taking it everyday it is wonderful. NSAIDS anti inflammatory drugs this is AWESOME I only wish someone told me sooner!!
Where can I find Tumeric and Quercitin? And how do I take them?
I’m 24 and have daily severe pain (mostly at night) due to L5-S1 degeneration. I’ve had low back pain for almost as long as I can remember (at least over 12 years). I’ve had MRIs, bone scans, X-rays, blood tests and nothing is clear as to what’s going on. I have depression because of it and I blame my parents and all the doctors/physios who have failed me by dismissing me. I have deep resentments to authority. Academically, I’ve managed to succeed, with a 1st in Chemistry from Oxford. I now run a small consulting business, where I am profiting personally around £80,000 a year…. I want to quit it all as the back pain is just too much and too persistent. I blame everyone for neglecting me.
Same problem i m facing 😢 dont know what to do opt for surgery or not
You arent alone, mediacal quacks are destroying lives by being greedy for money and lazy why dont we say it as it is
I know how you feel. The last time I was asking the doctor questions, he said I'm a tense person and recommended a personality test!! He said my environment could be stressful and adding to my pain!! I mean, come on man. My scans prove my back is wrecked. I have everything but slipping discs. Today's doctors are out of touch and have the government as third party breathing down their necks.
Sounds like you have something called TMS. Just google TMS DR Sarno. Really hope it helps.
Not sure how your parent's are a falt ??¿
As someone who just was told they have a degenerative disk, the comments, and this video broke me. I’m going in tomorrow for a full diagnosis and I wish I had waited until after tomorrow to watch this video.

This information is very helpful. Had a spinal fusion done of my L4/L5- S1 with titanium hardware and is suffering from spasms, discomfort and pain in the lower back radiating down my hips and thighs. Haven’t been able to work since late 2016 until now and been diagnosed with everything you’re explaining. Having a very hard time coping with not being able to exercise and limited mobility. I fully understand what is happening and why. Thank you very much for this information.😊
Metals in the bioelectrical body are not good around wifi and increases symptoms to treat $$$. There was a research study done on it I can't think of the reference at this time but could prob find it.

Thank you for the well wishes and blessings. I actually ended up on disability because it was definitely a failed back surgery. I am in pain daily and meds aren’t even helpful. I am grateful to have a supportive family and fantastic friends. I don’t wish this on anyone. I will not have another back surgery unless I have no control over it.
@@annallen8274 hello. Wow. We have the same story in a way. My back surgery went wrong big time. On total disability now.. no doctors will give me the time of day. And I really don't want to do it again anyway.. I wish I had family and friends to help. I got my dog.. lol.. but it could always be worse.. You and family are in my prayers.. Keep safe. Stitch..

@Dr. Brian Su - The Spine Guy can You please do a video regarding a vacuum Phenomenon in the lumbar?
what about u now man? i have same issues here.
Dear Doctor what can you tell us about Tarlov Cysts.? Thank you very much ⭐️
Experiencing low back pain with sciatica affecting both legs. I would like to see exercises to strengthen muscles to support my spine and help the pain. Thank you.
You should consult a physical therapist
I'm 46 diagnosed with 2 degenerating disc. Middle of back. Lower back. The one in lower back doesn't hurt across lower back. It is centralized. Hurts like hell. The one in the middle of my spine I occasionally feel.
How is it that I can get more information about my back and back pain from a few minute YT video than I can from my actual Dr? I swear to God my Dr seems like he could care less, and it just seems like I’m a nuisance to him when I come in. So frustrating
Same here it's driving me crazy what do they even do all day and they make good money I presume
Diagnosed at 18
I’m 47 and just found out that I have degenerative disk disease I’m was also diagnosed with menopause this year and man the lower back pain is killing me.. so I have to wait to contact a orthopedic surgeon in the next few days because it’s a holiday weekend… I still can’t believe this and at my age.. omg!!.. help!!
So I had this issue going on 4 months. MRI of neck ( which the Dr said it wouldn’t show anything… wrong) shows protrusion and Cervical disc. An X-ray of lower back I been complaining about shows the same multilevel DD. L1-L2, L2- L3 totally ignored it so now just focus on the neck. I’m in therapy for my neck but I need a professional who will listen.
Hello .i can help you to heal it.
("...if the discs are losing their height...they're likely bowing out so that they're impinging nerves?...")
I just had an Xray as well as MRI. I only have results for my X ray and said the most prominent thing is L5- S1 degeneration. My leg has been weak and pain started in my knee.
Canyou come to sri lanka.we can heal it without surgery
Last month I found put I have ddd in my cervical spine due to neck pain leading me to a CT and an mri of neck. I also have herniated discs in cervical and lumbar spine which was found in past mri after auto accident. Now this March I developed burning and pins and needles in both feet and am getting a nerve conduction study next month to see if I can find out why. I've had lower back pain for past 5 years especially in si joint area and right hip which feels like tendinitis . I wonder if herniated disc or ddd is causing my burning feet, diabetes was already ruled out.
This video is so informative, I wonder what you think about choosing the spine stimulator for severe thoracic pain due to nerve pain, degeneration of the disc that causes pain in my low back as well. The worst pain is the thoracic area. I do live in Marin & are trying to find a new doctor in my area. Thank you.Suzanne
You may want to consider Dr Ramo Naidu in my practice at California orthopedics and spine because he specializes in spinal cord stimulation. he is an anesthesia pain doctor.
@@DrBrianSuTheSpineGuy I have an appt w Dr Naidu scheduled this month. 🙏 Thank you
I feel good sitting, but hurts standing...
Had to have the last Ortho-disc surgery repaired by a Neuro so I could walk. C5 to T4, L4,L5,S1 all gone and L3 disk is going. Standing up is not easy. Got a shot in L3 but... Might need to do L3s nerves (disk is not bad)
I’ve got severe back and sciatic pain with numbness and weakness from L4/5 and L5/S1 disc prolapse and desiccation. The prolapse is putting great pressure on my sciatic nerve root. I’m 26 years old. I remember having this issue since I was 17, but only recently diagnosed. I’ve lost the ability to walk further than a few hundred meters, can no longer do any of my outdoor hobbies and now my working life is being greatly affected.
Watch the lumbar disc herniation playlist please.

Thanks for explanation Degenerative disc deseas good vídeo.
Thank you:) So informative👍I have recently been experiencing excruciating pain in my buttocks and have not been able to work for 2 weeks now. Saw an orthopedic surgeon & he took X-rays. He told me my L-5 disc was almost completely wasted away. I will be going for an MRI, but what he said after looking at the X-rays was that I would possibly need surgery. I would love if you provided information on what happens when a disc (for me L-5) is almost completely gone and is surgery usually/always necessary??? Thanks again!!!
It depends on what the status of the disc is and where the nerve compression is. It's hard to say without looking at the x-rays and mri.
@@DrBrianSuTheSpineGuy Thanks for responding. Appreciate it:)
How are you doing? I have just had the same thing happen to me, and was told the same by a chiropractor. Any luck?
Ok, but what do I do if I have a bulging disc at the age of 21 which shows a disc desiccation. How should I picture the future at 50-60 but in severe pain. Would I be able to play football or have an office job or that is perpetuating the problem...I dont even know how to behave and pick a future job because of this.
THANK YOU!! For well over a decade I've had severe back problems, my x-rays, cat scans, MRI's show moderate DDD. I'd say since at least 2008 I've been having problems. I'm now 68, 5'3" 130 lbs. I was orig. told I appeared to have ALS since I have such weak legs(also my arms but doesn't affect me as much). I've been telling my doctors "I CAN'T SIT"...that is my chief complaint. I spend most of my time lying on my stomach with my laptop just above my head. Towards evening I can sometimes get a few min (15ish) worth of housework done. My legs feel weak and extremely heavy much of the time. I wonder if I could have Pompe' dis. too? Also, if I sit for more than 10-15 min, I have to get on the incline board(flips you upside down) and then I feel (and hear) the vertebra snap back into place.
I'm currently 56 and did physical labor for more than 30 years in construction, regularly overworking my back while doing so. I'd already been diagnosed with chronic degenerative disease 15 years ago, and feel the same sensations (cold and continuous pain in lower back, buttock, side of thigh, side of calf, and top of foot) as I did then. I'd recently reinjured my back at a different job, and have started a prescription of nerve desensitizers and steroids. Is it possible to convince the new staff at the clinics that (for me) the injection is the most direct and most effective rout for relief, rather than starting over with mobility limitation testing and physical therapy? Both of those put more stress on the already injured and painful areas, and last time it took months before they sent me for an MRI, which did result in me getting a cortisone shot.
Please please explain Vaccuum Dish Disease
It is air in the disk space that is not a specific finding.
The pain doctor wants to do a eperderal in where the pinched nerves are if that doesnt help than surgery any suggjestions Dr.
Hi is it possible that dd l4/l5 inflamation iritate colon to a point of ulcer colitis?
Doc robert konior clame that is impossible.
I had fusion T12-L2 in 1998 due to L1 burst. The top screw broke on the plate cover and cage was demolished. Have rods and screws from T10-L4. Now have severe degenerative disc in L4-L5 and L5-S1. Not to mention severe L4-L5 and L5-S1 Stenosis. There is also mention of slippage and the beginning of scoliosis. I have a first appointment with a neurosurgeon in a couple weeks and am worried. I have severe sciatica on the right side and have been suffering with it a long time but it has gotten worse. On top of this I have multilevel bulged disc as well as severe stenosis in my neck. Was told by neurosurgeon I needed a 3 to4 level fusion there. That was 6 years ago. Could my neck be part of what is impending on my leg as well as my lumbar issues. I also began to have control issues with my bladder. Worsening about 6 months ago. Am I in real trouble? I think your videos are great. They have really helped me
Damn bro I would do the fusion if my bladder was messing up.. get the MRI and god bless you bro I got one bad disc at l3l4 and I take the Aleve and flexeril but feels like this is gonna be forever been two..almost 3 months now
Hi is it only surgery to treat lower back pain?
I am 66 years old, my lower back pain start 12 years ago when I had L4 L5 dic plunged.
sir im in army form India, i have l5 and s1 disc protrusion (ddd) with mildly instability. my doctor only had open discectomy, after 2 month of operation have now new symptoms like electrik shock pain same position and pelvis pain, some time it spreed lower addomen, Sir kindly reply what is my condition.
This helped me a lot. I have L4 L5 bulging disc that effects the sciatic nerve. Do you think Spinal Decompression works in getting the disc to go back into place?
Spinal decompression May temporarily alleviate some of your symptoms. Traction will help bring the disc away from the nerve temporarily. Ultimately your body may or may not heal the disc. You will see this in my lumbar disc herniation videos. you can always make an appointment with me by calling 415-927-5300. As a disclaimer this is not considered a substitute for medical advice from your physician.

Dear dr. Su,
Could you please give your considerations with regard to indication for and operative approach to endoscopic foraminotomy in cases where a lumbar foraminal stenosis is (mainly) caused by spondylolisthesis (grade 1 or 2), as compared to a (mainly) discogenous stenosis?
In such cases, does the removal of bony material needed to widen the foramen carry a risk of aggravating the spondylolisthesis, and/or of increasing the instability of the spine generally?
Thank you!
J.M.L. Burger MD (retired), Netherlands
There are cases when you can do a decompression even in the setting of instability
I need a solution to the pain I feel in my neck and lower back after being diagnosed with DDD over a year ago. I am 45 and still has alot ahead of me.

I had an MRI done when I was 30
Years old in 2000 . Through the years it’s gotten terrible and now that I am 53 years old Omg talk about pain. I had a neurologist. Tell me that my disc were getting flat and now it’s effecting the middle of my back . I can’t take sitting straight up for a long time. In my recliner I feel much better leaned back some . I can’t lay on my back because it hurts so bad. I won’t have surgery out of fear

I have searing pain and throbbing numbness (sounds oxymoron but 🤷🏼♀️) n tingling n throbbing at base of skull from pinched cervical nerves (2!)

I would never have lasix I desperately needed either. I would lose my mind without my sight. Srsly.
I’m losing my mind from the level 7-8 pain now. Narcotic level but I won’t take narcotics.
Lost ability to work as can’t sit or stand more than a bit at a time. Laying flat is only relief.
I’m trying NSAIDs 3x a day for 14days.
Hi Dr. Su, i been having lower back for many years. On MRI showed on of the disc started to see sign of blackened. In 2019 i had steriod injection which last only for 2-3months last month. Last week i did RFA fixing a slight slip disc and PRP injection on the blacked disc. After 4 days from the procedure, there is still pain. Im 41 yrs old actively playing football and running. Not sure what other treatment out there.

How often do you come across lumbaeization of the s1? I have that along with degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis. Add chiari
That is a pretty common occurrence. It is usually not an issue except for proper accounting for surgery and for injections. Sometimes it can cause pain with a bertolotti syndrome.
what about the ligamentum flavum that is going into the nerve space

Can you talk about S2. My sibling (65 yrs old) went in complaining of foot-arch pain. Dr sent to do EMG of low back, and that neurologist says S2 nerve is pinched and suggested 2 months of PT, and electrical CET. If no response, then atrophy in weak toe may get worse.

It can help
your Vedio helps me understand this DDD ...i have my companions who is now suffering from DDD...she just have only a hot compress every week... any advice? she undergone MRI and that's the findings DDD...

Thank you for providing this information. I appreciate it. Is DD disease looked on as a no surgery disease if there is no direct nerve impingement, by the medical community or does it differ in prognosis outcome from surgeon to surgeon? Is it hard to differentiate between the different disc levels for a definitive diagnosis? Would you ever recommend discectomy with fusion for DD disease in today's world where it is almost impossible to get any pain medication and the patient has suffered for many many years with this disease or injury? How do you diagnose this by looking at a MRI as so many times the Xray is so detached from the actual pain that the patient has.
And finally and most importantly, do you feel that there is any procedure out there right now that can help a person with DD disease that shows marginal degeneration, but is suspected of having a crack or tear in the disc? I would think that if there is severe degeneration these types of procedures, like DiscSeel, would not be possible to use? Or is it worthwhile to attempt to seal the disc and pump it up if possible? Sorry for the silly questions, but many of these are questions that I am trying to deal with as my situation now has become urgent as far as the need for some type of clinical action is required. I cannot go on much longer with this discomfort level and the inability to sit or do any type of physical activity. And I do realize you are not making any diagnosis but only answering general questions, if you do respond.
thanks

I love your videos. I have had low back pain off and on most of my life. It has gotten worse over time. I turned 62 yesterday and it is constant now. I had a CT scan done a couple of weeks ago. Among the finding of Spondylolithsis and a string of other things at L4/L5/S1 it was also mentioned about vacuum phenomenon. Could you explain that? Also, could trauma from decades ago be the cause of this starting? I had trauma to my back in the mid 1990's in this exact area and was wondering if that could possibly be the cause. Thank you for your time.
Vacuum is air in the disc space on a ct which typically does not cause pain.
It may can heal.i can show you the way
I am.40 year old and sufffring with this deases what should i do plz suggest me
So what if you just... dont have a disc? Like it didn't disintegrate it just... was never there. Is that common?
It could be lack of segmentation and a congenital issue from birth that usually does not cause pain
Is there a chance of pt. Being missed diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and ankylosing spondylitis? What's the difference? Thanks for your explanation and sharing your knowledge.
A.s. is an autoimmune type disease that causes Auto fusion of the bone. It is totally different than dosc degeneration.
I assume that would show on the MRI or X-ray also for AS? I heard AS is very hard to diagnose? Any thoughts?
Is decompression recommended? Example inversion.

1) Are there some ways to improve Lumbar Degenerative Disc? 2) Does Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease also cause pain in the hip, down the legs, and the foot? My husband is experiencing hip pain, but the X-ray result shows only Lumbar Degenerative Disc. Why is it?
There are ways to improve it with physical therapy. Degenerative disease can cause nerve compression which can cause leg pain
