BEAUTIFUL whistle! Just imagine that whistle echoing through the mountains!
and that whistle on the Santa Fe blue goose sounds like Rio grande 2-8-2 Mikado #497.
You kind of already can if you turn down the volume and use the quilling whistle
The Whistle is so beautiful
and the engine to.
That engine has a KILLER whistle!!!!!!!
Toby Pasman gonna love the sound of the whistle
It's scary how sweet it sounds
The whistle is a majestic whistle, my favorite whistle in all of trains.
That whistle on this Santa Fe blue goose hudson does sound like narrow gauge Rio grande 2-8-2 mikado #497 and I also sure like to see lionel model streamlined santa fe blue goose hudson #3460 & the matching streamlined passenger cars in three rail o scale with legacy style steam railsounds for the streamlined Santa Fe blue goose hudson steam locomotive as well as operating couplers and who knows what other features.
wow that's the best looking train AND the best sounding whistle I'VE EVER HEARD
That's not just a locomotive. That's a work of art!
The whistle I think is the best feature
And I still like it to this day
Me too.
yes
I know I’m three years late but I really feel like they should rebuild the Blue Goose in real life like what they’re doing with the T1
The best way is the use track design software to plan the layout. There are a number of free software packages (both MTH and Atlas make free software) as well as more advanced software that costs a little money. My favorite is RR Track, which runs around $100 or so.
I have a "N" Scale version of this model, works great. This video is very interesting, very little difference in each model type. Thanks for sharing this video.
Depends on what you're looking for. In terms of best deal for the money, MTH. In terms of high end details, probably Lionel. Of course, the absolute best passenger cars are, in my opinion, made by either Golden Gate Depot or Atlas. Weaver's are nice as well.
I love the Blue Goose passenger train. What an inspirational train!
The HELL WITH IT THAT'S going to be my first train set that was bought as complete set
MTH also made a 4-8-4 version of the Blue Goose but except it was actually a Norfolk and Western J painted in Santa Fe Blue Goose colors.
Bill vu which is a trainz Creator makes the worst locomotives Rekins ever he made a blue goose by useing the J class and made it have a 4-6-4 wheel set and changes the color scheme into the blue goose it was utter crap
Beautiful set, the colors are really pop. The whistle sounds amazing. The front looks really cool too. Great video Eric!
What a great sounding loco!
The Blue Goose is my favorite streamliner. I wish that it had been preserved instead of 3463. Either way, they could streamline 3463 and renumber it to 3460 and call it the Blue Goose.
Yeah! 👌
That's what I was thinking of.
Awesome! This is at the top of my wife's must have list!
Wow that is really awesome I’m so jealous I might have to get the set in 20 years when I’m living on my own
I think will be my first passenger train purchase thanks giving the price points the paint job has sold me on getting one of these I think it also adds a lot of character to any O scale 3 rail layout
Super glad you pointed out the non-flickering of the headlight, I was pretty confused at first!
I can't imagine why the ATSF would want to sacrifice this engine! It's absolutely beautiful! Out of all the streamlined locomotives that were lost to the world, the loss of this one is one of the biggest.
Well the ATSF intended to preserve this one but some of the paper work got mixed up and the one that's supposed to be scrapped is now the one that does excursions from LA to San Bernadino, also in my opinion I think that the loss of the NYC streamliners were the biggest losses
Great video as usual, Eric. I have this engine as well as the one Weaver did back in the 90's. Interestingly enough. I believe that Mike also did that model for Weaver as well. I just wish that some of the interior controls were lighted but the rule 17 lighting on the engine is cool. Keep up the great reviews.
Great review Eric! Love that paint job and the whistle is great on that engine. The low speed operation looks to be pretty good too. Thanks for sharing!
Boy the quilling of the whistle is great. Beautiful, and great review.
I wanted to comment on your video because it is done with style . great narration and really attractive layout also . Thank You for posting it .

Savin this for me
(No I’m not stealing the recording)
Eric I would love for you to do something like R’s Trains an do a Sunday run day! I would also love to see the Blue Goose going across your steel bridge
Thats one amazeing set, great sound, wotrh every $ you psid ,fantastic detailing , i agree with you on the livery its so nice..great review..
AWESOME review as always Eric!!!!! Love the Blue Goose set, it looks and sounds great! MTH did a great job with it! ... Whenever I'm in N.C. I always enjoy taking a drive to Winston Salem to visit Jeff at the Train Loft. He is a real nice guy and the store is sweet! He always keeps his store well stocked with all the goodies LOL! Anyways thanks for the awesome review bud and have a great one!
This thing sounds beautiful and the crew dialogue is pretty funny especially I think I swallowed my watch
If a person wanted, they could probably build a larger speaker box in the tender because there's plenty of room in there. Also, it uses one of the Veco speakers.
I for one thoroughly enjoyed it. I've watched a few of your videos and they give a good look at stuff that amazes me. Thanks for the info!
Beautiful engine and an excellent review. Thr Train Loft is one of my favorite stores to visit.
Set you have is very beautiful
Beautiful train! Great info. Thanks for all the great videos, Keep um coming.
BFIMO about this user:
The BFIMO part ;)
Eric, this was a great review. I had asked you before how the quilling whistle effect worked,I'd just like to say thank you for explaining it in this video.
I'd personally go with O scale if you can, you get much "bigger" sound, by that I mean they use larger speakers and there engines have more realistic bass. But with HO you'd save some money. It all depends on what you like.
i believe the whistle was recorded from a C&TS K-36, i dont know which one though
Does the one crew talk thing say, "I lost my spleen!" and "I swallowed my watch!"?
Mth makes THE best trains ever! I'll probably be getting their new s1 passenger set that came out in the 2013 mth catalog
eric you have been an great person and like your review on the blue goose thank you
Beautiful set Eric! Thanks for the review!
I have been watching your videos and just amazed in all the detail in some of the models...I did notice the smoke seems to be more visable in this model not sure if your using different fluid or just a better smoke unit...
16:46 Man: I DROP MY THING! I think I fall out my watch!
I love the sound of the whistle of the blue goose.
Me too
The obs should have a clear lens in the top center light for a rear head light for making long reverse moves. 3460 didn’t have a radio and was an oil burner. No need to shovel coal. Plus paint out the cars and install stainless steel corrugated sides and top. Sorry to rain on your parade.
Yours truly, Steve Rippeteau, retired ATSF conductor. I have the HO Tenshodo brass 3460 since 1968.
Railscenes 3460 had a secret radio nobody knew about. It was installed by the military in 1940 in preparation for World War II.
ericstrains Hahaha lol. also you might mention that these ATSF Hudsons ran at a normal top speed of 90-100 MPH but were known to run over 100 MPH on a regular basis. The Illinois DIV crews called her the Blue Bird. Others named her the Mae West. MTH did a lot of detail work. That box mounted on the front of the tender or “Oil Tank” is for sand. Periodically the fireman would throw a scoop of sand into the firebox to clean the carbon and oil residue from inside of the flues to steam better. The blow down was usually done out in the open country away from stations. Great detail but to bad MTH copied the AHM paint scheme for the passenger cars. But the 2 tone grey cars would be good to pull with the 3460. Thanks.
Beautiful engine, very unique.
"I dropped my spleen" "I think I swallowed my watch" Haha.
Wonderful whistle
Gorgeous streamliner
I love the detail of locomotive and tender's sleek strealined design it's verry vissually pleasing
The 3460 was also nic-named “Blue Bird” on the ATSF Illinois Division. Then the Mae West.
For all the detail and excellent reproductions, it is a shame that Lionel cant come up with more realistic looking track.
Hey man love your trains reviews there amazing and is the Santa Fe "Blue Goose" maybe be your favorite engine
That whistle gave me chills
Nice video as always!
So I do lego trains, and I have quite the fleet. My prize and baby is a british streamlined steam 10 coach express (me being british). I've watched this video a dozen times over the past few days and now I want to do a lego incarnation of the set!
beautiful engine, and amazing vista dome
I recently learned that MTH trains need batteries for the sound system. If you as me that's stupid. Lionel's rail sounds system doesn't use batteries why should mth's protosound systems? But I gotta say I'm rally lovin the color of this train!
Hi
Correction, my friend. MTH used to use a rechargeable battery pack for their PS1 & PS2 locomotives, but the introduction of their PS3 engines have eliminated the battery pack and MTH trains now use built-in power capacitors. So no more batteries in MTH products. :)
Lionel engines do have a compartment for an optional 9 volt battery that can be used when running in conventional mode, to prevent the sounds from cutting out during running sessions. The batteries (and now capacitors) that are used in MTH engines allow for the engine to go through a "shutdown sequence" when the engine loses power, as opposed to Lionel engines which abruptly cut off when power is lost. In other words, the on board battery (or capacitor) allows for a controlled shutdown of the electronics inside the engine every time.
This really isn't my field of expertise.
I'm Shure elsa is fine she's just in the bathroom.
WOW! Thanks for sharring loved watching the video! Beautiful set!
15:07: QUILL THAT WHISTLE!!!
I wonder how accurate the paint job is on this engine. I would assume the cab interior would not be blue. The reflection off of the silver on the engine and tender is really cool.
Thanks for sharing, a dynamite package. That whistle is AWESOME! Why MTH never followed Lionel's lead with "drifting chuff" is a mystery? Steam engines usually coast into the station on arrival, only chuffing under load. OH WELL ... Great video.
Hi Eric...What a great video, you did it again, I don't know what to say but thanks...Frank
Great video Eric ..keep them coming.....getter done...
I wish Lionel would use working scale couplers instead of the big O-Gauge couplers. I feel like the scale couplers would make it more realistic.
I wish to have it for my birthday.
In the video I explained that they're not really blinking. It's how the LED's look on camera. Has to do with them fram rate of the video vs. the refresh rate of the LED.
That's an incredible set!
Magnificent and real value for money !
They were going to apply the streamlining to a northern but it would have made the locomotive too heavy
Beautiful locomotive
by far my favortite engine ever
Great train set
OMG I love passenger sets!
looks amazing.thank you for sharing eric.
Hey Eric I own 3 locomotives 2 Steam Locomotive from C&O, Lionel Line (broken), and a diesel from Milwaukee
what a beautiful train
I really like that whistle
Finally, a "True Blue Goose"! I don't see how All the competitors got by with the "Northerns" that came out.
GREAT review!!
You videos are always great!
Omg the bell sounds like my own NYC 4-6-4 steam locomotive.
The tender of the Blue Goose engine looks like a Norfolk & Western style tender.
Darn I really wish these were not over 1000 dollars but of course that won't happen very nice looking engine
The purpose of the reviews is not just to convey information, but also to educate those who may be new to the hobby. Sorry you feel that way.
Why does Lionel use big O-Gauge couplers and not scale couplers which would make it more realistic?
What makes a 4-6-4 run on 0-54? I thought all of them can run on 0-42's and 0-48's.
Hi Eric I just realized you have never done a blue comet train and I like how you give alittle history lesson on your reviews did you do on that I haven’t seen yet?!
I love your Santa Fe super cheif
The one in Topeka is AT&SF 3463
I would love to see this in G-Gauge!!!
Can somebody explain to me why 027 track has the third rain exactly in the middle between the outside rails? Thing is, I've seen several full sized systems where a third rail is used - for what exactly I don't know - but there it is snuggled up to one side rail or the other but I've never seen a third rail exactly in the middle of the outer tracks and to my eye anyway it looks toyish.
I have a idea you should customize your steam engine to blow smoke out of the whistle. That would be awesome
The best feature that was removed from the engine and most newer MTH engines is the annoying air pump sound. I think it was redone and it not as prominent in the sound set.
I'm 13 and love trains. I have 1 question...what is the best way to start model railroading
HellcatGaming it depends on how much space you have and personal preference. I personally recommend HO scale, specifically the "Echo Valley Express" starter set, as it has DCC and Sound.
When you reviewed the Erie Triplex You said “If it was MTH Is Best to wait until later when We do the PFA”
That whistle sounds exactly like the Strasburg railroad #90.
Stevewivibeevy channel not quite... 3460’s whistle is a little softer
Cool! Great Review Eric
The crew chatter is completely optional and does not have to be used.
You have lots of great stuff on a awesome layout! I have some questions though. How do you pay for all these trains? they look really expensive. How much time do you spend working on the layout? And finally, does your family like trains too? It seems they would letting you convert the basement into a massive train layout. Great stuff Eric!
