- Untangling power cords attached to hand held power tools, and then wrapping the cords back up for storing neatly is annoying and takes way too long. I wanted a quick connect power cable for my power tools, a bit like Festool.
So after watching the Marius Hornberger video I decided to give this a try. Firstly i tried it on a couple of tools to see how the Neutrik PowerCon True1 connectors would work for me. I found the connectors to be great, not too long or unwieldy as i thought they might be, i really don't notice them when working and the convenience they offer is superb.
Having used a few Festool tools and seeing the convenience they offer with the use of just one cable, i was sold on this idea as soon as i saw this video on the Neutrik PowerCon connectors.

As an audio engineer who has used Neutrik connectors on microphone and instrument cables a jillion times (they're pretty standard for that), this is one of the coolest things I've seen. Genius!
Thanks. But I did get the idea from another CZcamsr. 🫡
Not seen an update on this recently, but wanted to throw my pennith in (lancashire phrase in uk!) These have been around for a long time now and they were developed by neutrik for the ents industry. These are bloody amazing and high current rated. Neutrik is the world leader and in fact they are the designer and manufacturer of these. Just be careful as there are many chinese rip off versions!! Only use the genuine connectors .... as an aside they are fully water tight and where designed to be used outdoors for production/events. Love the video and great to see them used for other applications!! Happy days!
Absolutely doing this!! Great video, thanks
Its really great idea. Thanks for shearing it. Three thumbs-up for you 👍👍👍
Very cool, great idea!
Excellent idea !
I-upcycle Reclaimed Wood I can't take the credit, although a while ago I did consider doing something similar but with the leads on a pc computer (kettle leads) but I couldn't quite commit to cutting my power cables.
Stuff I Made either way thanks for sharing , food for thought ! 👍🏻
Love it thanks for the video
Greatness! Thanks so much for turning me on to this! When mine come, my plan is to attach the female connectors to cords of varying lengths: 3-foot, 5-ft, 10', 15', 20' cords, which I'll color code with some tape around the wire next to the connector.
i have been using them now for some months and i love it tools are really quick to swap out and the connectors dont get in the way!
I would think the issue with your plan is electrocution should you accidentally touch the live probes.
Can I do this with any power strip as well? Just any schuko plug in general?
Something like this looks better than the connection to our electric lawn mower where it's a standard 2 prong outlet where the cable can come unplugged if you aren't careful.
Robert Russell yep I know what you are referring to. These have a positive locking mechanism.
Great stuff!! The dremmels the one tool I'd imagine would need the light tether-does the plug and socket thing get in the way for bulk and weight? :)
Nope, but if you are concerned just leave a bit more cable. I also use the extension on my dremel for fine detailed control. Even without this the connection is no problem!
Hi, can anyone recommend a U.K. supplier for connectors. The links go to an item that is no longer available.
I’ve never thought about this before but do all corded power tools requiring fusing to the same amperage?
CPC / Farnell are the cheapest I’ve found.
Hi. This seems straight forward enough, but im really no sparky.....So can I ask.....The power cord you used......does that have an earth in it which is wired in to the regular UK plug at the other end?.......If so.....do you connect the earth in to the female connector (if you dont have it in the male)? Can you explain this bit a little please.
Regards, Chris.
The neutrik connectors have an earth, but not one of my power tools had an earth to the corded plugs. So I feel confident that not using an earth is not an issue.
You will see if you unscrew the plugs on any hand held power tool.
Thanks geoff
Sharp Edge Woodworking that said I di earth from the plug to the female connector, but as the tool has no earth couldn't take it to the tool. But at least the connector cable is earthed.
Stuff I Made Yeah I guess if it doesn't have one already, it must be good. What type/core/gauge of cable do I ask for when I go to the sparky suppliers...do you know?
Sharp Edge Woodworking I am no sparky, but some tools are 5amp, 10amp and 13amp so I made up cables using a length of cable from a 13amp supply. You could just use the cables you cut off the tools.
Note what fuse you have in each tool and create cables with fuses for each type. Different colour cables for different fuses. Shouldn't really be an issue. But do this at your own risk ;)
Yeah so as long as your cable can handle the highest 13 amp tools....all the lesser ones with run fine...right? ;o)
Can I ask what make/model your wire stripper is? Much better than mine.
Mike o'donovan hiya. I have had the wire strippers for over a decade. There is no model number but just a name K.Y.P. There does seem to be very similar ones online when I searched auto wire stripper. But it's difficult to know if they cut the mustard. Good luck!
Buy the Irwin automatic wire strippers. They work flawlessly even with daily professional use for years. PN 2078300. Mine took a few uses to break in but after that they were great.
Any import duty? Farnell sell these in UK
Dave Carpenter no import duty to uk from Germany as part of EU ( temporarily)
Thanks
So you actually need just one female connector for the cable. One male connector per tool. So you have to buy more male ones and just one female will suffice?
MySchizo Buddy yes, I bought a few female ones so I have a few spare cables. I have worked with it for a good while now and it's great!
Did you ever try connecting your extension cord to a GEFI OUTLET IF NOT TRY CONNECTING IT to SEE IF IT WORKS On mine it trips the outlet on a GEFI WAS and on regular outlets it works fine.
Ignacio Ortiz I am in the UK. I think you may be referring to GFCI outlets. We don’t have these.
have you accidentally wired neutral to ground by chance? that would work in a normal outlet but trip a gfci.
Great idea! Just a question - won't it invalidate your warranty for the tools?
Jim Black yes it will but honestly I can't recall ever using a warranty on any hand held power tool... so I took the risk. Now all my tools are out of warranty. Having used it for a while now I just love how easy it makes things!
Definitely one to consider doing as most of us have got cables trailing all over the place!
Why not use standard sockets like you have at the back of PC towers?
Max Maker yep I did consider this as you can buy a female version. I think they are a bit tight fitting and clunky, and the cost was only double, so as a one time investment I preferred this option.
Stuff I Made was wondering the same.. This is a fair answer..
the male goes inside the female...
Great video...;-p
Eye Toldyoosso when you look inside the male connector the prongs protrude, hence male I guess, but I did think it odd at first. Thanks for the great video comment too ;)
By doing this, don't you void the warranty? It's a good idea, but you will have to wait till you tool warranty expires.
Yes, you do, but I don't recall ever using the warranty on any tool. That said, now my tools that have this are now out of warranty, although they weren't when I did this. I just took the risk :)
Thanks for the reply. I have some power tools that i use today that's past it's warranty. I will use this setup for those tools. I also have a few that i recently purchased that I'm not willing to chance.
I've had power tools go out on me before the warranty expired and I have some lifetime warranty tools, Rigid.
I will reach out to the rep and see what they say.
I really like this setup. Dealing with power cords have been a pain in my ass for a very long time and I think this is a wonderful solution!
Damn, 1:01 I don't know how i missed that, but you did mention the warranty. I need some coffee!
34stzoo here’s the thing, the benefit far out ways the risk for me. The continued inconvenience of cables vs. the risk of one of my tools failing made it worth while. Gotta go with your gut though ;) good luck 😉
someone needs to make a CO-AXIAL 120 volt connector that does not require aligning....with 3 poles
seems like the idea would be better if the connectors used the standard connections (so you could use a regular extension cord in a pinch, or multiple tools plugged in at the same time). the only change i'd make would be to use some kind of locking plug connection that could lock the cords together. or even better, a locking mechanism on the tool cord that could lock on to most extension cords. then you could use the extension cords you already have. still a good idea, though. nice video!
I'm not sure about the practicality of this set-up. At 8+ dollars for each tool and then the tool can only be used on the additionally fitted cord, I''m no so sure. Seems like once you go with this set up you either have to have multiple mating cords or an adapter to use multiple tools at the same time on the job. This may be a good set-up for the bench, but on a job with multiple carpenters/mechanics, this set up would become self limiting. But nevertheless, a fine looking connector set.
Scott H works well in my workshop, but maybe not so much for a job site!
not bad but price is bad
Time and convenience is worth it
If it makes you buy fewer cordless tools, the cost of the connectors is totally worth it!
Waste of money
Having used it for 8 months or so now, i would have to say it is working very well for me. But can see why that might be an opinion. I was wasn't certain to begin with.
