PTO shaft drives a shaft on the digger with an arm that is offset on the output side. That offset causes an up/down motion that is passed to the back part by linkage, causing the 'screen' part to rise/fall with the turning of the shaft, making a shaking motion. Pretty simple.
Wow, don't see many tater's but it does a great job harvesting rocks. add a longer conveyor and pull a wagon to collect the rocks and you have a winner !!!
