Thank you so much for this. A gift. You hear the age in her voice now, but the artistry is still remarkable, and there are frequently phrases of pure gold. And the music - why on earth do we hear this so rarely??! Magnificent.
True, at the start the beauty is that of autumn leaves rather than the green of spring but the Elfenlied shows the voice still pinging with youthful precision and the following Anakreons Grab gives us the full bloom of summer. One of the great singers of my life time and still one of the greatest singers of today. The music of Hugo Wolf is also supreme of its kind. "Kennst du das Land" could be argued for as the greatest individual "lied" of all - but such competitive approaches to music are best confined to mass appeal TV shows. Here is marvelous music making that needs no comparisons.
The underlying soulful forces in Goethe's and Mörike's poems set to Lieder suggest to me that there is so much love, beauty and purity one experiences in these Lieder. Renee Fleming's singing touches my heart.

Very nice to see an orchestrated version of "Er ist's"!
Interesting to hear. Thanks for sharing this.
