- It's that time of the year for us here in Growing Zone 8b where everything in our garden starts going backwards. Many of our vegetables crops are on their way out for the season and now we're left with an empty plot, what should we do? Typically this starts for us in early July and for the next several weeks, it's going to be tough so we need a summer cover crop that can take all this heat coming our way! There are many benefits in growing a cover crop in between seasons, for instance, they help with soil improvements, erosion control, nutrient cycling, and much more! Join Hoss in the garden, let's grow together and get dirty!

Zone 7 the weather is killing my Summer crops. Between the heat and rain coming at inches per time, I remember why I like fall gardening better!
LOL. I swear, don't know why I didn't look at this one again. I was thinking it was further back. I looked at everything from a week to a year ago. Thanks
We are using Sun Hemp, Buckwheat and Sunflowers in 3 plots for cover crops.
Sorghum Sudangrass is my favorite!
I planted the Hossanater tomatoes and the pablano peppers I will plant them again in 24 Best tomato I have grown in a long time
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for all of the good info
Our pleasure!
Greg, I heard you say something recently about the buckwheat which I have planted on my entire garden. You said something about you could leave it instead of extinguishing it before it seeds. I have searched videos for over an hour looking for that with no luck. I would love to leave some of it while I succession plant corn this fall. Can you please refresh my memory about what you said? And if you remember the video I'm talking about, let me know that too. Shiela was with you. Thank, Jenny

Hey Hoss. Also have a Solo hand broadcast spreader. Didn’t know if you knew it or not, but you are supposed loop the strap over one shoulder, under the under the other and attach it to the under of you spreader. Your gonna give yourself a stiff neck with the strap across the back of your neck like that. We need you to keep making videos; not laid up somewhere in a neck brace. 😂😂😂😂. And yes I’ll be ordering my cover crop seed this week. Love y’all.
Thanks Greg. I wish I had that much turf. I have a small Garden but above ground planters and grow bags and buckets all over the place.
What brand grow bags do you use? It’s hard to pick them out online bc I want something heavy duty that will last.
Hey Greg, with Sudangrass and buckwheat, what's the best way to terminate? Cut short with mower and then till it in green? Or cut it short, cover with tarp to kill grass, then till in?
Yes, I cut it short and then till in.
I was planning on spreading a mixture of things. What would you recommend spreading together?
yes, we often do a cocktail mixture also.
Evening Mr Greg. I have a question. Should turnips and radises be started in trays? And thanks for the radish seeds 😀
you can if needing to start early, but can direct seed.
@@gardeningwithhoss awesome. Thanks so much
Great video and very informative! I going to be digging my potatoes soon and I’m planning to plant buckwheat behind them then I’ll do away with it in time for my winter cover crop. Does that sound like a good idea? Winter crops are usually planted around September or October here
Yes, good plann
What’s the best cover crop during to winter to run the chicken tractor over?!
Mixture of the clovers
What the best cover crop
it depends where you are and what the purpose is. Nutrients? Weed suppression, Pollinators?
@@gardeningwithhoss needs more pollinators

Is there a good choice of a cover crop for large (5 gal and up) containers that are too large to empty? I'm I'm SENC, zone 8A.
dwarf sunflowers
That’s interesting. I never thought of a cover crop for large containers.
Is there anything that can be planted to break the cycle of grasshoppers?
Planting a variety of different flowers and plants such as lilacs, verbena, salvia, sage, dianthus, forsythia, lantana, and juniper around your garden may help. Not only will many of these plants help deter grasshoppers, but some will also help attract pollinators to your garden space. Spray strong-smelling substances on plants: Certain strong-smelling scents repel grasshoppers and many other insects. DIY garlic spray, vinegar spray, and hot pepper spray are common homemade remedies for home gardeners
