For any who know, Zabulon was staying in Afghanistan only because he was faced with divorce as his family fled and his wife wanted a divorce in Israel. The Israeli government froze his assets to make him comply, but in Afghanistan they had no jurisdiction to carry out the court summons.
God bless this man for staying behind when all us Muslims left our homeland. He is truely unique in more ways than one. Afghan jews lived for thousands of years in complete harmony with us. RESPECT!
@MenechemShaul It was also because the people who wrote the liturgy were either heading to Israel, living in Israel, or had recently been exiled from Israel. It was pretty hard to ignore. Off the top of my head, I can only think of the Book of Esther that doesn't involve Israel at all. It was also the first book that called us Jews, and not Hebrews or Israelites. Fun fact for you.

@MenechemShaul I am happy being an American Jew. This Rosh Hashana, there were many prayers, but one that I felt very connected to was the prayer I said for America. The prayer where I asked God to watch over this land, guide our president, protect our soldiers, and help us to hold and cherish liberty. Whether it is America, Israel, Argentina, Britain, France, Ethiopia, Germany, Russia, etc., Jews around the world will continue praying for their countries, and that should include Afghanistan.
