Tools:
Only basic tools such as screwdrivers, hex keys.etc are required for fitting however you will probably need a bottom bracket removal tool and crank puller to remove your bike’s original hardware before you can install the motor kit. You may also want a chain breaker tool if you need to alter the size of your current chain.

Parts used to fit Trek Marlin 7:
Offset 42tooth chainring for BBSHD Or BBS01 motor s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DEw...
7.5mm worth of motor spacer rings for the BBSHD motor
Or
5mm worth of motor spacer rings for the BBS01 motor

You will also have to lengthen the chain by adding additional links to fit the larger 42tooth front gear. I ended up purchasing another chain to extend my original one - Věda a technologie
I bought a 1000W Bafang kit after I saw your last video, and have had a great deal of fun on my old 26" steel hardtail DMR. Who cares what size your wheels are, when you've got 1000W at your disposal? Thanks for the suggestion!
A few other tips I'd add: if you have a big battery pack (to go with your illegal-sized 1KW motor, ahem) it pendulums during normal riding, & you need to stop it from oscillating, otherwise, it'll crack/ream out the mount, break the screws, etc. I made a bracket with a fork that goes around the rear of the battery, to steady it, that mounts on the rear bidon mount on my old steel MTB frame.
Fit the shift sensor up at a top part of the gear cable run, to stop dirt and water getting inside and making it work badly.
Also, mount the motor rotated as far up as possible, for ground clearance. Make sure your BB shell faces are paint-free and faced properly, so they grab the mounting lug and gear-case correctly. The tools to do this are expensive, but a good bike shop can do it for your when the bike's stripped down. Saves hours of frustration later.
I had a few problems with a dodgy Hall effect brake cutout sensor, but changed it and it's now ok.
Extra grease in the transfer case makes your nylon gears last longer. I've shredded a pair already, but they're not too expensive, and I've put some proper nylon gear grease on them (the factory stuff is yuk) and the new ones have had a lot longer life already.
I bought a front and rear light to run off the battery (Busch & Muller make a really good range of non-dynamo lights for e-bikes). I had to fit a solid-state step-down to make 6V for the rear light out of the main 52V, (RS & Element14 have them) but the B&M front light will run on any voltage from 6 up to 72v. Not cheap, but exemplary German quality.
You go through brake pads quite quickly with the extra weight & power, but I have Deore XT dual-piston calipers from the bike's earlier life, and fitted some SwissStop pads with fins on them, which cools them and makes them last longer.
Schwalbe Marathon MTB tyres last a lot longer than anything else, with fewer punctures (which are a pain on an e-bike).
The Bafang range estimate on the display is rubbish, the exact opposite to my Kona EV's. I just press the indicator button on the battery, and go home when there's only 1 LED lit.
Its really beautiful in your area. It would be a dream to live there. Awesome review!
NZ is a beautiful country, and your videos have been a big help to me thank you.
I use the BBS02B 750W, 48V, but with a 52V Booster battery, using Samsung 30Q,with 2PS14, 6Ah, Discharge 30A, Battery Weight is only 1.2kg !!, at normal pedal assistans 9.4Wh/km i get easily 33Km, not to mention pedaling as a normal bike is also easier as i don't have the deadweight of a discharged 21Ah, 4.5kg Battery. Charging is also a third of the Time. I think this is great for Bikers that will bike more and just use the powertrain to get up hills.
Love your videos! They’ve helped me build me own custom electromagnets and high power e-bike conversions :)
Rolling on 3KW AWD is a whole other level of fun
I bought and fitted the kit in the original installation video that Schematix made.
I'm a big unit. 23 stone. But it powers me around town and up some quite step hills on my commute to work. Before fitting the kit, I very rarely took my bike as it was such an effort. I'm in the UK and have never been questioned as to the power output.
I'm in the UK too, long as you don't go excessive speeds you'll be left alone. Just bear in mind though If you have a prang they may look into it.
I'm in Wales UK is there anywhere I can get this kit fitted to my trek?
Course you won't, Police can barely keep on top of proper crime, if they start wasting time on enforcing people's bike power the world has really lost its priorities and common sense. Tbf it's already ridiculous how much time is spent penalising people for going a few miles an hour over the speed limit so anything is possible.
Did it help towards weight loss?
I've had the BBSHD installed on my Stumpjumper 29'r Hardtail for 2 years now. 52V 17.4Ah battery. I have mavic wheels\hubs with hookworm tires. I'm 6'3 225lbs and I can reach speeds of 30mph on flat surfaces and can go 30 miles on throttle only averaging 25mph. (42t for good tq and mph) I can greatly extend that by setting the pedal assistance to 5 or lower. Zero issues so far.
How much was the whole setup? :)
@@djVania08 I think $1500 since I went with a larger battery.
Mph you mean?
@@chrisE815 Haha, yes. I usually don't make mistakes like that.
@@chaleowin7732 Np- that's cool. I have a BBSHD with a 40T sitting here ready to be installed. Sounds like a reasonable gearing choice for my application.
I cut the display cable and put it through the down tube then re soldered it. Helps give it at clean look
@4:19
Watching that dork disk spin cracks me up 😂
The standard kits are good and highly recommended. And if you want much more power then get the standard BBSHD as listed on his link plus the Grin Industries Phaserunner. Now that's an awesome setup.
Thats another $300 plus, on top of the cost of the HD, way to expensive
@@RobertAdams-ly5ku It turns it into a different bike. Well worth the cost imo
@@grantadamson3478 Yes, a massive improvement, maybe I'll take a look in the future
New Zealand is such a beautiful Island. Absolute paradise, to me. I live in the appalachian mountains of S.W. Virginia .I'd love to ride my ebike around that area!
Thanks for the video, between this an the Schematix video, i'm pretty set on this as well.
I'm wondering if you can provide some advice on the fitment of the bottom bracket. You said you needed an offset sproket and spacer - can you assist in how I figure out measuring if I need this?
Hey when you start filming your ride around the 4min mark what cam are you using, it looks crystal clear, thanks from London
Had a big HEAVY 1000W but i returned to 250w because i like a lightweight bicycle style over heavy fast machine, i bought a 22amp controller and battery 🔋 is 54v ,she is perfect at around 20mph with alot of extra Torque, now no3 is like no5 was pn the 36v battery 👍🇬🇧 barely gets warm here and i pedal assist only ,bike just under 45Lbs 🙏🤟💯
Where did u get the kit, especially the 22amp controller.??? I am in sweden.
@@brettrickards EbayUK
So does the 250w not mean it's slow ? I've seen a full kit with battery for cheap but worried it will be too slow for mtb use ?
Good show enjoyed it like your ebike stuff
It’s annoying that there are so many rules on limiting motor wattage. Governments don’t seem to understand that I don’t want to race it around at 40mph, I just want to get my fat rear end up some really steep hills. The whole point of which is that I can lose some weight.
I'm just ignoring those rules and taking whatever power I need for a safe and quick commute. After all, we are doing everyone a favor by not using cars and as long as we ride responsibly it should be fine.
Yep and there seems to be no limit on HP in cars and motorcycles.
@@persiathiest1963 Yes, BUT if you are in the UK or EU or several other countries with the same speed and power restrictions, if you end up involved in an accident and cause injury to someone else, you can bet your bottom dollar, pound, euro or whatever that you will be prosecuted and convicted with the inevitable financial penalties and probably a substantial civil compensation claim from the injured party.
Basically I agree with you that you will be fine until something goes wrong.
Then you will have a criminal conviction with all of the long term consequences that will follow from that.
If you're unemployed and don't own any assets then it won't bother you too much.
If you are employed and do own assets then you could be well and truly f*cked.
The good part is that these rules are only there on paper because it's near-impossible to enforce them
The few ruin it for the many. Regulations are aimed at the masses. I have been eBikibf for almost 20 years and nobody has stopped me to enforse anything. Of course I do not flaunt the extra power. Ever.
Thank you so much , I am inspired to convert my Specialized Sirus 4.0 Flatbar bike . I intend purchasing the Bafang BBSHD 1000w kitfrom your link provided. Samsung Battery 48V 17.5Ah RT Style
Fantastic video. Thanks for sharing.. greetings from Brazil!
The max assistance in the UK is 15.5 mph. I wonder, would it suddenly cut out at 15.5mph or would the power cutting off be unnoticable like the mahle rear hub motor I had.
Nice builds!
New Zealand is beautiful 😍.
Great video.
Interesting... I'm in the process of choosing between a Marlin 7 and a Rockhopper 29.... any opinions between those two? (Adding BBS02 750W)
hello nice video, I would like to ask a question. I have a deore 12 speed at the rear, what is the best chainring to register better I shift? A thousand thanks
Thanks for the vid. Great montage but I'd opt for a good mustache any day.
Just some great content here
Just ride sensibly & they!!! will leave you alone, 300 Watts may be OK for some, but for serious daily commuting, on semi rural & town roads, I vote BBSHD1000, reliable & good acceleration when it's needed, like on busy roundabouts
...gotta go with the flow, can't happen if you're slow!
Do you have a video of how you hide the wires or tidy them up? Ty
Hi @schematix .... Will the 1000w kit fit a medium/large trek marlin 7 frame
Hi, I have a 2016 Trek X Caliber 8 could you please recommend a 750w or 1000w ebike kit
I am converting Trek marlin 7 i have order bbs01 kit do I really need the other extra parts things mentioned ?
Did you run into any problems while converting it? Becuse im thinking of converting a Marlin 7 with the bbshd kit and do not have alot of experience with bikes
WOW what a nature!!!
10:51, would be nice to see that hill with a muscle driven bike also. All muscledrive, 250W and 1000W :-)
Why didn’t you run your wires thru the frame. Makes for a super clean install
Should you use a reinforced chain?.... 🤔..
What size frame is this? Trying to figure out which battery I can fit on my medium marlin 7
Kindly question: Can this kit be fitted on a 7gear fatbike ??
Have a 750w and upgraded to 250w a few was ago because I wanted something more simple and lighter weight. 250w suits me just fine.
I think that would be considered a downgrade to most people.
What kit would I need for a Trek roscoe 7 2021 ? Thanks
Does that bafang kit include everything you need?
Super
You said 52V 21Ah battery pack...What was the actual size of the case?
I'm about to modify my Trek Roscoe 8 (L-size, 19.5) and I was almost sure that 17.5Ah would be the maximum capacity due to space limits.
Thank you for the video. I purchased a BBS01B with 250Watt sticker the seller swears max is 750w. He states that it is illegal in some countries to have any motor higher than 250W. Your thoughts?
He is right. I bought the 750w motor and was sent some 250w stickers to put over the 750w 😊
Are they compatible with press-fit BB?
is thee 2mm offset enough to straighten the alignment?
are both motors have a cadence sensor?
Could I put this 1000w kit on my Grand Canyon 29er ?
The best thing I ever got
nice area budd:)
I have just got a bbs02b and a terk marlin 5 and have spacing issues will this help with that too ?
Hi, I am just in the process of getting a bbs02b to fit into my Trek Marlin 6. Did you resolve your spacing issues? As this is also worrying me.
Your LINKs to the Programming Cable & GEAR SHIFT CableS are the same. I am surprised no one has brought that up in a years time.
I have a 4x4 pickup with a winch on the front. And would like to add a winch to the rear as well. My question is, would I have problems with voltage drop, by running the 12 feet or so of wire from my existing battery to the rear of vehicle.
Thank you sir
Montage moment was very MonkeyShred 👍👍
Here in Sweden the powerlimit is 250W.
1000W would be crazy :-)
Great video, helpfull
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW where is this lake at 7:00? aabsolutely stunning
whats the max speed of both?
Do any e-Bikes have regenerative breaking?
The drive system of most bikes cant accept any reverse torque, therefore no breaking is possible. Its like trying to pedal in reverse. There are bikes that have a breaking ability when pedalling in reverse. But those are one-gear bikes (fixies i believe)
I think its efficiency is not worth the extra cost and complexity and that's why there are no such e-bikes.
Will a 1000w motor go up steep hills on throttle alone?
Yes
does it work like a normal bike when battery is turned off?
Add 30 pounds
please make one on dual sport 2
What if your bike has 2 derailers? One at the back and one in the middle?
You take off the middle one because the new front crank cog only has one ring on it
@@Geowebbie you do lose some gears though then.
thanks
The areas of New Zealand that Kiwis think aren't necessarily beautiful are really beautiful. The camera loves that country.
Which motor is most efficient when talking DC- the 250 or 1000watt? Thumbs up.
That's not a serious question is it?
@@ActivityPhoto Most serious. Given the same parameters of a bike and rider which is most efficient?
Does the kit come with motor spacers and offset chain ring?
Looking for a kit that will do at least 40 kmh and range of about 60km
your usb link and shift sensor link are both the same link
I must say you live in a beautiful area that seems to have many great riding areas. Here in the US Southern California not so much. May I suggest you switch to chest mount for you camera on riding videos as your head movement is very distracting.
You clearly don't know Southern California.
That red thread locker though…. Blue would have been ok and you’d have been able to remove it without using a torch
62 miles is not far enough so I will be sticking with pedal power until the tech improves.
Liked and Subscribed, cheers bro
The BBS02B 500w 🧐😁
I could not care less about a few lbs difference, BBSHD allday!
My 48v-10 ah battery sucks drains quick don’t ride it much because of this. Power assist max 5-7 miles a lot of hills.
Of course i choose higher wattage.
felt more like - watch me riding my bike! ;D
thx eh
I swear most CZcams review videos are the result of watching to much tv .
Are you really going to act like the 500 and 750 don't exist? It's laughable to compare a 250 to a 1000.
The transition effects are a bit too much man, struggling to focus on your video 😅. Normal cuts do the job bro
lamo!!
why?????
nz has too many rules.
Just ride sensibly & they will leave you alone, 300 Watts may be OK for some, but for serious daily commuting, on semi rural & town roads, I vote BBSHD1000, reliable & good acceleration when it's needed, like on busy roundabouts
For everything!
Butt nutt so many Schoolshootings ass the United States of Ass ‼️
@@thebeaglebeat3615 i would definetly take the 750 watt instead, if u are not gonna be switching the controller and pumping the watts to 2000 as u can with bbshd BCS the 1000 watts costs 100-150 bucks more at least and only goes about 5-10 km/h faster than 750watt one
:Laughs in Australian:
Current laws here where I live:
Cannot exceed 250 watts
Cannot power solely by motor above 6kph
Cannot provide assistance past 25kph
Neither.. electrifying mountain bikes is offensive.. ride the damn thing :) (sorry, I am a cyclist..)
E bikes are faster and more fun to ride
hope you never get arthrosis and necessitating knee prosthetics, then you i'd like to see you ride the damn thing 🙄
My mate is a semi pro road rider. Hates electric bikes. Had a go on mine and instantly loves it. Maybe you should just appreciate it if you ever need it due to health
... gotta move with the times..
Here is a practical study that busts the myth that people riding electric mountainbikes is not sport. Auto translate helps to understand the gist of it as it's in dutch.

What does the shift sensor do?
You wasted lots of time to say nothing.
