  • Have you ever wanted to see a former NASCAR race car be built for ACTUAL racing with professional guidance and not just someone doing it clickbait shenanigans? This is the place for you! I am building this car to go short track racing in Grand National Super Series! This car is a 2004 Ronnie Hopkins chassis used by Joe Gibbs Racing from 04-07. It was driven by Bobby Labonte, Aric Almirola, Joey Logano (who won Busch East title in 07 with it), and Jeff Anton.

    In this video I start from ground zero after finishing the bodywork and figure out how to get the Dodge R5P7 engine mounted in the chassis which was configured for a small block chevy. Iconic NASCAR crew chief Doug Richert helps keep me on track and provides invaluable advice on what I should and should not do!

    Can you imagine if all the old teams had the ability to video their work and document it for future generations. The fact that you are able to take the wealth of knowledge from all of your contacts who built these cars and put it into a video that shows you applying that knowledge is pure gold.

This is so cool doing something like this. When he built that #22 Bobby Allison Charger Daytona, he stopped counting at 2800 hours. Working months in a row without a break. Working full time and then the Charger every day after work, and 12-14 hours Saturdays and Sundays. But without guys like you and Tim, the history and legacy of these cars and drivers would be lost or even forgotten. Keep on welding, too. All of this stuff reminds me of wadding up a car bad, driving 6+ hours for another chassis/roller, stripping it, rebuilding it with a mash up of our salvaged parts & what was good on the new used chassis, have about 6hrs of sleep over 36 hours, get to the nitty gritty final touches the night before our next race, bring in a guy to help finish the little things, only to take hot laps, go barreling into turn 3 - bury the right front in the wall at 105mph and discover our outside help we brought in the night before cut the left front brake line short and tore it clean off the caliper at 3/4 turn.
    The memories of tearing up 15k of chassis' and suspension on consecutive weeks with all the hard work and sleepless days....lol

    Hey, first of all I want to say I think you're doing a really great job and I like the comment you made about doing your best on the small pieces so that the best is accomplished throughout the build. My name is Gary I live in Northwest Georgia I'm 68 and I'm really proud of what you're doing. I wish I was there being able to do that. In my lifetime I've always been involved in building machines from the aspect of the electrical and control but also I went with the machines out in the field to make them run and in that capacity I was responsible for everything The mechanical the process of the packaging, flow of the product etc etc from point a to point b to out the door. So you had to become a jack of all trades cuz you are the one that is responsible You call back to the shop for help but the troubleshooting diagnosis and the solution was up to you. You be safe and always give God the thanks for we do nothing without the blessings of our Heavenly family.
    I was just thinking when you take this out into a race you won't want to get hit which is an understatement but you know it's going to happen, I guess what I'm trying to say is you built this from bottom to top and so you have a lot of time it's like art for understanding I used to play guitar in a rock band and it would be like my favorite guitar getting broke from handling but things happen when you apply the instruments in your case race cars in the environment that you love and then something happens to it. I have a 67 Gibson SG of which one evening my wife come in and told me not to get mad and I said what are you talking about she says Gary being my son got his foot hung up in the guitar cable and pulled the guitar off the stand and busted the neck at the headstock. As you can imagine I was sick but I kept my cool, and also my son he felt so bad so bad, but we got it fixed up and always good and an experience where we are tested we all came through and everything was okay.
    I love your historical view because the information the veterans have is priceless. I enjoy your show and I don't have the money to contribute as you can imagine being on a fixed income and trying to live in today's chaotic society it makes it tough. The most important part is to have peace, and to love your brothers and sisters in your journey through life. Godspeed my friend, stay safe, be aware, or as they say keep your head on a swivel and watch your six. This is my first comment on any CZcams show. Many blessings to you and yours, GWC

    Hey man - I’ve only just now watched this and I appreciate you taking us along for the journey. A current goal of mine is something similar but optimally a Gen 3 Lumina.
    So I think we may share some of the same tendencies toward wanting to do things right and, like with that cutout Logan was grinding on, a tendency not to move until something is fully understood and a plan has been thought through. I’d never say this is something negative, since it is based on values and literal work ethics. That sort of commitment is tangible in the work you create for your channel.
    But a bit of wisdom that has served me well, especially when trying to balance perfection with production, is something called the Pareto Principle: It holds that 80% of a task takes 20% of the time to do it, while the remaining 20% to do the task “perfectly” requires 80% of the time. During the early years of NASA, the idea was paraphrased as something like “perfect is the enemy of good.” In practice, this principle can help to balance when “good enough” is sufficient or when perfection is necessary, that five “good enough’s” can be had for the time it takes for one “perfect.”
    Keep it up, man. Just about to watch the next part which just dropped!

    • @Stapleton42
      @Stapleton42  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks man! Finding that balance and adjusting that balance relative to the given task sure is an art form in itself 😂

    • @b.w.22
      @b.w.22 Před 2 měsíci

      @@Stapleton42 - Totally. In fact, I think the history of Stock Car racing can be framed around the nature of that balance, something your videos often flesh-out. Like how did Robert Gee do so much out of his little garage in contrast to institutions like the Petty’s. How could Alan Kulwiki achieve his successes when racing against the Hendrick teams, Junior Johnson, and just ruling over teams like Bahari with their huge facilities. The careers of racers like Jimmy Means or Dave Marcis, even Ralph Earnhardt or Dale Sr. and Childress in the 80’s are so important to examine because of the decision making required, balancing compromise with the drive for victory in teams who didn’t always have “the best equipment,” as they say. Your tour around Robert Gee’s shop really opened my eyes, thinking how many of those Levi Garrett #5 cars came out of a garage/shop smaller than my own.
      I think that kind of environment and struggle is what made people so interested in NASCAR in the day, seeing these scrappy teams go up against the Petty’s, Holman-Moody, or Junior. Smarts and attention to detail, along with some “innovation,” could win the day and people felt so much closer to all of that, as opposed to the monoliths that are the Hendrick’s or Penske’s today. It’s hard to relate to modern teams with 100,000ft2 shops and 22 year-old drivers.

    Crazy I had started watching your videos 4-5 months before you got this car. You bought the car two towns over from me in western mass from Jeff. Funny thing he had a decal business and did dirtbike graphics for multiple friends of mine so when i watched the video when you bought it I couldn’t believe it. Also on your extra channel on your way home you stopped and filmed a little segment of your pickup and the race car on the trailer with the noble & coley drum factory in the background in Granville Mass, which is about 10 min from my house. It was wild to me that I had started following the channel and you end up buying the car so close to where I live from someone who I knew of and friends know personally. Sorry for the long explanation but keep up on the awesome videos!!

    Mitchell, first I want to say thanks for all the Vintage NASCAR content you put out, it has reawakened my interest and has me looking at buying a car of my own. Second: some friendly advice. Wear some gloves and a faceshield when using the cutoff wheel. You can only get lucky so many times. Also, I'd wear some cotton pants, not nylon shorts, I know it's hot, but melting plastic on your skin is hotter. Third: don't be afraid to pick up that MIG and squeeze the trigger. If you can Tig, you can Mig. Some of those weird angles are way easier to weld that way. (I'm 48 and have done this kind of work for over 20 years, still have all my fingers and toes and eyes but made many mistakes along the way. Remember safety gear is way cheaper than a hospital visit. Keep up the good work, we are all rooting for ya!
