Fernanda Melchor first came to the attention of the English-speaking world with 'Hurricane Season', a tale of murder in a lawless Mexican village, described by Ben Lerner as ‘Brutal, relentless, beautiful, fugal’. In 'Paradais' she continues her exploration of violence, class and misogyny with a chilling story of two misfit teenagers living in a luxury housing complex, haunted by macabre fantasies of escape. Melchor discusses her work with Nicole Flattery.

Melchor is the contemporary writer that has torn my heart out, scared the hell out of me, and showed me that literary form can still renew itself into something vicious and gorgeous and wholly unique.
She deserves far far more recognition for Hurricane Season. It was just mesmerizing. And horrific. Just... so damn good.

Melchor is a genius with the moral courage to offer an unflinching report of the journey through our hearts of darkness.

This book is one of the most intense books I've read. It grabs you by the collar and demands to be read in a single sitting.

I feel pretty spiritually close to fernanda. I’ve seen both sides of violence: Physical & Verbal. She speaks from the heart. I felt that.
