@mikeb53 after all these years I didn't know there was a book with jaws 2 storyline. Imo the first book was poor, one of the few times I thought the film was better than the book. Is the 2nd book worth a read?
@@palermothegoalgod-wd2wp the second book is better. And you get some stuff from the sharks perspective too. It largely follows the film. It's no Shakespearean epic but it's perfectly readable. The book suggests that it was the shark in jaws 1 (Bruce) who got her pregnant
The crappy mechanical shark model was the reason for the first jaws success. It had so many problems that it was not seen until the latter stages of the movie, allowing the audience to imagine a real shark during the earlier scenes, which made it more realistic, because your imagination never uses an inferior model. This is why many people will prefer a book over a movie based on the same book, because the imagination sets high standards, to which the movie usually falls short.
I'm afraid that's become a big myth. In actual fact, Bruce was never scheduled to be used for the first half of the film. First scheduled appearance was July 1974 when filming moved out to sea for the Orca based scenes. The beach attack scenes were filmed in May and June. They could never have used Bruce in the 3ft to 4ft shallow water there anyway. They had a perfectly working fin contraption but they never used even that until the pond scene. Spielberg kept the shark hidden by design. He was a suspense director, as Duel and Something Evil shows. The various documentaries have skewed and exaggerated the situation. It was out at sea where Bruce kept malfunctioning, all through July and August. More details can be found in The Jaws Log by Carl Gottlieb and Memories From Martha's Vineyard by Matt Taylor. The guest half of Jaws mostly went to schedule.
The fact that the shark only shows up later in the film was not a function of it not working. It was a function of the script. It was in the script that the shark's full reveal would come in the third act. Movies are shot out of sequence. Roy's famous reaction shot was filmed 2 weeks before the shark surfacing behind him.
