This is THE Marvel movie that started it all and saved Marvel from financial ruin.

Wasn't Howard the Duck first?
@@Venjax420but it flopped, this movie saved marvel and gave it the legs to get the MCU where it got
@TheCheekyhalfling fair.... which is hilarious because the summer it released on HBO (aging myself), I watched it over and over and over.
Ultimately it was Men in Black. That was the first late 90s Marvel movie that showed the company being able to make decent/good movies that could make money
Wesley Snipes as Blade is one of those cases of perfect casting.
Brandon Lee as The Crow is another.
@@cozenw3236 Amazingly, both Heath Ledger, and Jack Nichalson were incredible as The Joker.
Yeah a role where you just have to look cool but requires no acting skill.
@robertcorbett9455 your comment is very dumb. Not everybody can come and play a role like this and not make it feel cheesy or ridiculous. It takes an awareness that a good actor usually has to pull off a role like this.
@@robertcorbett9455 And they shoehorn someone into a role just because they are popular at the time. And completely suck for the role in all aspects. Nick Cage as Ghost Rider comes to mind. And yet, Wesley as Blade, Hugh as Wolverine and Pearlman as HellBoy. So perfectly cast for the roles are they. We as fans cannot imagine anyone else ever taking up those mantles and doing them justice.
In case no one else mentioned it, Snipes did all his own fight scenes. He's a martial arts expert in real life, and was at that time.
This was the first comic book movie that made studio execs reevaluate how they treated and made comic movies. The success of Blade made them realize if they actually took comic book characters seriously and stuck to the source material that comic book movies can be successful. A lot of people don’t realize (but should) that Blade launched the _modern_ comic book movie era.
For Marvel, yes. DC made a bunch of money with Superman in 1978 and Batman in 1989.
Unfortunately it also taught them for a bit that they could only dress their heroes in black leather.
@3Rayfire true.
Wesley did his own stunts. He's a high-ranking black belt and has been training in several different martial arts since he was a teenager. The little girl was a top Tae Kwon Do competitor. Wesley saw her compete and wrote a part for her.
I like that she just got bitten by a vampire, shot at, tossed from a building, shoulder dislocated, and Kat is all like "support her neck!" haha never change, Kat.

She's really sharp that way. It's not 100% of the time, but it's still surprising how often she cracks movie secrets right off the bat.

“Some motherfuckers always tryin to ice skate uphill” is just Wesley Snipes. He made that line. Iconic.
It's so cool that you pointed out that Karen could handle herself. She was never really a damsel. Of course, Blade helped her, but she never really RELIED on him. She decided to make a cure. She crawled out of that tunnel on her own. She even took out a few vampires. It's refreshing to see and they didn't have to hit you over the head with it. Situations came up and she dealt with it. Bravo!
Absolutely, Karen is one of my favorite victims that very quickly breaks the mold and even becomes a badass along the way , that was such a golden touch to this.
and of course, because it worked so well she wasnt in the sequel.
LOVE YOU MARVEL!
Which is why it's such a tragedy that she didn't continue on in the trilogy. Or anywhere else, the movie is easily lesser if her performance isn't there.
Don't forget gave him an iconic new weapon to use. One even a blood god couldn't resist,
This was the first successful marvel film that pretty much proved they could make the films we now have. Wouldn’t have them without Blade
Then X-Men came along to prove it repeatable and here we are.
@@chrisd4228 Then a bunch of awful ones came out, everyone proclaimed the genre dead.... then Iron Man came out and proved that the decline was false, and they were just waiting for a good story with a good hook in order to not only make more, but start tying them directly to each other.
Blade
X-Men
X-2
Spider-Man
Spider-Man 2
Those 5 films are what made it possible for us to have the MCU. Without the critical popularity and financial success of them, Iron Man never gets made, DC maintains its position as the top grossing comic book film franchise, Disney has no interest in purchasing( *and funding* ) Marvel, and Kevin Feigi remains a little-known footnote in Hollywood history.
@@teruienages962 And now Marvel truly DELETED the genre by giving us Phase Bore and Phase Dive, with No Way Home the only success thanks to the Sony Spidermen and Guardians 3 and Dr. Strange just barely breaking even. Everything else lost money. With The Marvels rivaling Indy 5 as the biggest box office disaster in history. And they now need the Fox Men to save their sorry MSheU. Because instead of giving us the comic book stories and characters that sold millions they went for the current day comic book stories and characters that only sell in the thousands.

That's what basically everyone going to see action movies want. Sadly, no one has been listening for years. Blade today would probably take a back-seat as science-lady fixes all his problems for him and makes him look like an idiot in the process. Thankfully, we can always watch old movies until Hollywood comes back to its senses.
@TheNefastor you could've stopped after the first "." At no point did my comment sound like it had any intention of going the way you went, it was all fun and supportive. If you want to moan and complain, start a podcast, don't use other's comments, thanx
The real horror of this movie is how underrated this film series is IMO. The second one is probably my favorite of the trilogy. We really have Blade to thank for many of the (good) comic book movies that came after.
Not really, but it did get Marvel's movies launched.
Giving the second movie to Guillermo was a wild choice. He went crazy with it and it's amazing.
I hope the Blade game in the making will be good.
Giving the world lots of smug, unfunny superhero movies isn't something to be thankful for. But Blade shouldn't be held accountable for them.

Blade is the film that Wesley Snipes ended up making because the studio didn't want to make a Black Panther movie. The studio execs believed that “no one gives a damn about any Marvel characters except for Spider-Man," and only agreed to make Blade because he didn't wear spandex.
I can imagine a great Black Panther movie with Wesley even today. The man still got it.
Studio execs: their record for accurate predictions remains unchanged...
@@dupersuper1938 No kidding. When M. Night Shaymalan made Unbreakable, the studio execs asked him to tone down the comic book superhero elements, saying that it was “a niche audience; those people who go to conventions." Ironically, that studio was Disney.

blade is a classic and yes 2 is very good also and 3 is not bad as well. Wesley snipes is absolutely iconic as blade
3 is actually pretty bad...
Let's be honest, Trinity is not great in a lot of ways, but it has some amazing moments. It's probably my favorite Lolz
Each movie is a reflection of the director.
Stephen Norrington set the foundation, with horror/super-hero action stunts, and some very visual set-pieces (the blood rave, motorcycle attack in the building fountains).
Blade II channeled Guillermo del Toro's love of horror and comic books, with his distinctive color palette, dark humor, and willingness to have over-the-top craziness. My favorite of the three.
The third film had a first time director and Snipes having a personal meltdown, causing a troubled production. It had its moments (Ryan Reynolds showed he wasn't just a comedic actor), but Trinity was the weakest of the films by far.
@@mmattson8947 But fortunately Trinity would birth us Deadpool, and for that it is significant and has a brilliant legacy.

This movie should rightly be regarded as the start of Marvel's cinematic success!
When people say "should I watch the Blade sequels?", I say "Blade 3 is an unofficial mini-prequel to Deadpool".
If I recall correctly it was while making the third movie that Ryan Reynolds learned about the Deadpool character. And hearing he described himself like "Looking like something between Ryan Reynolds and a Radioactive Sharpei" he knew he wanted to play the character.
I love how you always appreciate movies for what they are instead of worrying about what they are not. Never change.

Karen is a Haematologist. She is an expert in blood disorders and vampirism seems to be a virus in the Marvel universe, so she's the perfect person to find a cure.
Before Whistler was murdered, she says that she went to the hospital and took some stuff. She spent the night creating a cure for herself.
You were sharp-eyed enough to notice that the blue vials weren't Blade's serum (which are red) so kudos to you...! 👍🏻

5:36 A line delivered so well, Samuel L. Jackson sent flowers.
The real horror of this movie is that too few people give it credit for being the actual birth of the marvel cinematic universe. (This movie was the first movie Marvel ever had a hand in (under Marvel Enterprises, long before Marvel Studios was ever even a concept) and did it more as a test to see if they could make money off it. If Blade had failed to make a decent profit, we wouldn't have any Marvel movies today, or at least they would be very different.) The actual reasons he wasn't included in the early (rebirth) of the MCU was because he already had movies, along with rights issues, seeing as a number of Marvel characters had been sold off to other studios, so Marvel only had the rights to publish them in comics, not in movies/TV shows. The most well-known of these was of course Spider-Man, but it also included a bunch of others. Blade as a character had been announced to be incorporated into the current evolution of the MCU years ago now, however there have been a huge amount of delays due to a bunch of different factors. The secondary horror of this movie is that this was the original concept of what Marvel movies should be...brutal, unapologetic, with interesting characters and rated-R. They dumbed everything down with the current evolution to appeal to a wider audience, but in doing so, it took away a lot of the true badassery of many of the characters, which made a lot more money, and a lot of people enjoyed for a quite a while, but quite frankly begins to get boring eventually. The reason Infinity War and Endgame made so much money was because they followed the original concept of Blade more closely, made them a lot darker and deeper and essentially made 2 DC movies instead of Marvel movies.
for real, too many people accredit over movies for stuff that this one did, like i dont know, being the start of the Marvel Movies AND having two Black Leads... yet no no lets give all that to black panther
@@MikazukiIshtar Blade had a black lead actor, the rest of the main cast was mostly white. However, nobody claimed Black Panther was first in that regard. There was Blade, Spawn, Steel, Meteor Man, Hancock, etc.
Black Panther was however, Marvel's first black comic book character and the first MCU film with a predominantly black cast (and crew).
Blade wasn't the first Marvel movie, but it was the first GOOD Marvel movie, the one that gave them a blueprint for future success.

It really is! ^_^
Stan Lee's executive producer credits were just contractual. He didn't have anything to do with making the movies or tv series, he just collected checks for them.
Blade is from the 1970s, when the horror genre made a big comeback in the world of comic books. Marvel in particular created several "horror heroes" like Blade, the Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Ghost Rider, etc. DC had Swamp Thing, the Demon and others.
So BLADE the movie series is NOT a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. DC Comics has been owned for most of its existence as a corporate sibling to Warner Bros., but Marvel did not have that kind of affiliation. So instead, Marvel would sell the movie/TV rights to various characters individually, with no real thought of having a united mega-franchise of all the heroes. This is why, before the MCU takes off, we had 20th Century Fox doing X-MEN, FANTASTIC FOUR and DAREDEVIL movies, Columbia doing SPIDER-MAN and GHOST RIDER movies, Artisan Entertainment doing the PUNISHER movies, Universal doing the INCREDIBLE HULK movie, and New Line Cinema doing the BLADE series. In fact New Line also had the rights to Iron Man and almost made an IRON MAN movie starring Tom Cruise in the early 2000s.
There were 3 Wesley Snipes BLADE movies, as well as a one-season BLADE TV series starring Sticky Fingaz, but the character is going to be officially joining the MCU in the upcoming BLADE movie starring Mahershala Ali.
The Blade TV series has no right to be as good as it is given the amount of support it got, it's a surprise gem.
Blade is a character in a series of Marvel comics. That's the connection.
Blade is indeed a Marvel hero. However he operates at street level and only concerns himself with hunting vampires (and indirectly other supernatural night-time evil doer's) There has been crossovers with other Marvel hero's, but nothing really of note. He would join The Defenders (with Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Iron Claw) but their vampire hunting priority doesn't 'cut' it for Blade.
Ah the days when we could easily have an R-rated Marvel film. Blade walked so that Deadpool could run.
"Cheesy and charming" .. reminds me of someone lol. Loved this reaction - I needed it after a hard day and you delivered. Thanks for always putting a smile on my face!
There were a handful of Marvel character movies made by various studios before the MCU and Marvel Studios were formed. Blade (Warner Bros) was one of the first successful ones. Then came the X-Men series (2000-2020) with Fox, then Spider-man (2002-Present) with Sony. Daredevil (2003) and Fantastic Four (2005-2015) also with Fox, a little Punisher (1989-2008), Hulk (2003), Ghost Rider (2007, 2011) and a few others sprinkles in too. Mixed reviews on most of them, I personally liked most, even with the campiness and questionable production of many of them.
Great review👏 Having seen Blade several times, just watching your review now, it occurred to me how much it preceded The Matrix in almost every way. It's uncanny how the aesthetics, stylings, choreography, music and tone are damn near identical. Blade started so many trends. Blade really deserves its flowers, given how it stands as the first modern day Marvel movie.
Wow, good call!
The Matrix was in conception for several years and came out a year after Blade. They didn't watch Blade and throw a movie like THAT together.
Blade didn't start any trends, it was one film in the middle of a trend of "dark" (in aesthetic as well as tone) action movies in the 90s, it wasn't the first or the last even if it was a VERY good example of one. You arguably can even go back to the Keaton Batman if you wanted the start of the trend, but you had The Crow, Spawn, Dark City, probably others I've forgot by now. Blade was definitely influential, because it was one of the more successful ones before The Matrix really moved the goalposts for everyone.
Haha I got mention the fact that whistler had an awesome line when he saves blade’s ass “catch you fuckers at bad time”

I read another reactor's comment section and going to pass it along. Back then, this was simply a "vampire movie" not a "Marvel movie." Also in the same year we had John Carpenter's Vampires, another excellent vampire movie. It was a trend following From Dusk Till Dawn a couple years before as well as Tales from the Crypt: Bordello Of Blood, and Interview With A Vampire another couple years before that. It was quite a time when Horror films were the thing blending with other genres of course. It still seems to bounce between Zombies and Vampires today.
Yea I would agree. Im absolutely sure that not many people realised this was anything to do with marvel when it came out. It was just a great vampire movie with plenty of gore and action. With an awesome opening track!
Vampires were huge in the 90s.
i knew of blade from Foxs Spider-Man, i was hoping there would eventually be a crossover when Spiderman came out and was successful, but corssovers werent a thing until Iron Man and The Increedible Hulk... you dont realize how stoked i was when I saw Stark show up in the mid credits of Inc Hulk...im like "these movies all mean something!"... now crossovers are so common it kind of lost its appeal, but im not against them.
Zombies vs. Vampires: The (Economic) Battle Continues
Bruce Watson
"Over the past few years, popular culture has become a veritable undead battleground, with armies of zombies and vampires fighting for the top spots in literature, film and television. A year ago, I analyzed this struggle and discovered that there appears to be a loose connection between recession cycles and monster movies: zombie films tend to be more popular during boom times, while vampire flicks are ascendant when the economy is bad."

The only times I ever saw Blade in a comic not named "Blade" was in a mini-series "Hearts of Darkness" where he teamed up with Ghost Rider and Wolverine to take on Blackheart (son of the devil in Marvel). Then he was one of the rotating members of The Midnight Sons with Ghost Rider (both Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch), The Punisher and Morbius. Blade is actually a full vampire without their weaknesses.
He was originally full human immune to vampire bites, later retconned into a human-vampire hybrid (a Dhampir). And he does have one of their weaknesses at least, their bloodlust.

Remember when Deacon was holding the little girl hostage in the park and made the comment about being cut from his mother- he knew Blade was born by c-section. He knew who Blade was the whole time.
Deacon Frost is one of the great film villains, you really feel the charisma he has to make people follow him even though he's clearly a lunatic... the conversation where he's convincing Quinn that "he needs him" to get him on board with capturing Blade rather than killing, it's top notch writing and acting and completely unexpected for an action movie. You 100% believe that people would follow this guy. Or the little look and "Thanks" to Quinn after the completely unnecessary punch in Blade's face, great character moment.
So good. Wesley is beyond awesome as Blade. Just the BOSS! Blade was originally a supporting character in the Marvel comic Tomb of Dracula which was part of their horror series back in the 70s along with the likes of Werewolf by Night and Man-Thing. Marvel are currently working on a new Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali and due out sometime in 2025. He already had a voice only cameo as Blade in a post credit sequence of 2021's Eternals. But it is hard to imagine anyone coming close to the uber cool badassery of Wesley in the role.
The real injustice is how Karen wasn't even mentioned in the sequels. The actress N'Bushe Wright has since retired from acting which is a shame...she was great!
Yeah that was weird and IMO a missed opportunity, she's such an interesting and capable character.

That was a mean thing to do. She's way too gorgeous to kill off so quickly. She should have been Deacon's girl. Way better than the one they got to play her.
@@SurvivorBri I really thought when this movie came out that she was going to play that role, disappointed
Yeah, I think they even considered making that character have a twin sister so they could bring her back.
There was a big deal about her being in it at the time, then just not used
This will never win a poll, but the 1985 horror/comedy House is right up your alley. Think, Evil Dead 2, but less scary. 🤔
Loved your reaction to this, such a fun film. I don't know if people have suggested "REC" before as a possible future watch but that is my favourite horror and highly recommended.
Fun facts on this movie. This was technically the first R rated Marvel movie to be a box office hit. Kevin Feige was a young production assistant on Blade. And Wesley Snipes had actually written & pitched a Black Panther movie in 1997 to a number of studios , years before the MCU. o7
I love Kat so much. Only horror reaction channel that never insults the movie, and her takes are wonderful
"halfsy-vampsy" bright a hugh smile and a laugh to me! This was a great reaction! Definitely watch Blade 2! It's just as good, in a different way.
Great reaction and to one of my old favorites I still watch to this day
The genuine excitement when you were watching the head popping scene, was awesome
Kat, you never bore me!
This was the first Marvel movie carácter that was a sucess.
I always liked this Blade movie because for some reason they cast Traci Lords as the young girl at the beginning, bringing the human to a vampire party. They took a chance in alienating many potential movie goers because of Traci’s still (at that time) very well known movie career spanning 1984-1987 and the reason it ended so abruptly.
It's worth mentioning that Whistler is played by folk legend Kris Kristofferson. His songwriting credits include "Me and Bobby McGee," made famous by Janis Joplin. For a man who sang alongside Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson he played a pretty good vamp-slayer.
Wesley Snipes is a highly decorated martial artist in real life.
Blade was introduced in Tomb of Dracula, one their horror comics of the 70's. Marvel has quite a few horror characters in their pantheon but since people associate Marvel exclusively with superheroes they get kinda swept aside a lot of the time in other media. Thankfully Blade is getting a reboot soon and rumors are Wesley is coming back as Blade in other MCU projects. I personally would love to see a Tomb of Dracula series.b
If the quality of the other Marvel horror comic characters matches that of "Werewolf By Night," it could be a darn fine ride. 😎
@@thomashiggins9320 That's what I'm hoping. Werewolf by Night was perfection. I just hope the other horror projects go there too instead of being completely watered down. I don't need a hard R film, I just need something that feels like those comics, that whimsical Halloween type atmosphere.
Blade is a Dhampir; the child of a human and a vampire. Commonly referred to as a Day- walker, as their bodies produces enough hemoglobin and can absorb vitamin D from sunlight. The majority of vampires can't do that. But you should understand just as there are Day- and Night-walkers, there are other kinds of vampires. They are not really a species they are a mutation. As you find out in the second movie, they are created by cancer if it had a purpose other than killing you.
And the other thing you should know that while they age very slowly, they are not immortal. The guy who slapped Frost was born in Roman times, but you can already see he is ageing.
The reason Blade gets forgotten about in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is because what is the primary MCU is what was made by Disney. Which always makes it fun to see new era reactors find Blade when it pops up and gets voted in. Same with Men in Black. People are watching the opening credits, and are like "Wait, WHat??? Based on A Marvel Comic Book?!?!"And its a case where they made a fantastic version the first time around, so re-booting it runs the risk of alienating OG fans.
This was done before Marvel Studios ever existed, The comic characters rights were divided among different studios: Fox got X-men, Fantastic Four, etc. Sony got Spider-Man, Universal with Hulk, etc. etc.
This was possibly the first succesful Marvel movie in theaters (there were previous attemps, but mostly for tv or video and not very good). The success of this movie paved the way for the X-Men, and then Spider-Man...
Now Marvel and Marvel Studios have everything back together and there's a new Blade in development for the MCU.
Let's hope Blade from the MCU movie is good. No more M-She-U. Nor M-He-U either.
